THR Mayhip8's recovery thread

Buenas dias! I'm back my lovelies. @Mayhip8 , @Calgal and @ahipgma firstly dud you miss me and secondly have you all behaved? I had a lovely 5 days and the area was lovely. Set off on a right old walk on Monday around the coastline , hubby kept asking if I was managing (I was doing really well might I add) as it was a rugged track and I was enjoying my achievements until the hubby (clumsy clot he is ) slipped and twisted his ankle so me with my post surgery hip had to jump to the rescue and help him down!! I must say my knowledge about ice, rest and elevation came in handy so we had a very relaxing day on Tuesday mending his ankle then it has been him limping rather than me! So what have you all been up to? @ahipgma hiw you managing with hip 2 as I noticed you were reducing the strong medication? Also have you two ladies over here been enjoying the weather as I heard the bank holiday weekend was glorious? Also apologies if you answered these questions in any later posts but my computer is not updating properly so I might be out of date. Anyway, wanted to say hi and when we on virtual vacay next? Love to all xxx

Yes we missed you senorita, and were relishing the Spain-like weather over our bank holiday weekend without you, our little globetrotter! :hiking:. I've been watching over @Mayhip8 and @ahipgma making sure they don't overdo it. But that mayhip, well she's doing the Chrissy thing working hard. :tiredwheel: kGlad you're back! :wave:

Welcome back @ChrissyW , glad your new hip carried the day ( and you) well and hope your hubs ankle is feeling better!
@Calgal has been on the pom poms and one day blends into to another as I pass the first week-- woke up with a little postop blues today so i took a shower and I'm on my back deck enjoying the breeze and the sunshine trying not to get weary of all the hobbling. I think the opioids depress me a little but I obviously need to continue to take them for a while so, a balancing act there but I will do Ok.
So inspired by your adventures with 2 good legs!!!! I have only been to France, Italy, and Austria so would love to hear what you actually did / saw in Spain!
As I type its early afternoon here, so I figure your event for your dear one has happened @Mayhip8 , i hope it went as well as could be. As much as we see it in our profession when it is one of your own all that reasoning just goes out the door, and it hurts. May he rest in peace and may God hold you close as you mourn.

:console2:Hugs @Mayhip8
I hope you found some comfort in gathering with all those who love and are missing your friend today.

Hopefully you'll get a lighthearted chuckle out of Chrissy's hubs falling on vacay and her playing Nurse. It's like the blind leading the blind. :wink:

Wishing you peaceful sleep tonight.

@ChrissyW @Layla @Calgal @ahipgma ... Thankyou all for your kind messages . I am blessed .
I did do a reading and it was hard . The day went as well as these things can. I'll be back as soon as I can to chat about all the lovely and positive things . I just need to gather my thoughts now and reflect.
I'm sending love to you all and feel the love you Sent to me and the family . Xxxxxxxxx

Take the time you need. Sending a warm hug and keeping you in thought and prayer, dear Mayhip :console2:
@Mayhip8

:flwrysmile: Good morning ladies

So I had a quiet day yesterday mainly resting and mooching about as I'd been on my feet for literally 14 hours from the start of Thursday throughout the funeral into the early hours of the morning . looking back now the day went so quickly . The service was beautiful it lasted about an hour and a half, I managed to read the tribute I'd written and included the poem "He is gone " by David harking. Over 150 people attended and I think that's a reflection of how popular and loved he was.

On a practical note and without an ounce of selfishness intended the low chairs were massively a problem everywhere. In the chapel, at the hotel, so difficult to sit down and get up because of pain in my unoperated hip, one of my friends purloined a big cushion for me to sit on but that just made me higher than everyone else on the table,!!! I spent most of my time standing up. By late evening my Unoperated hip started clicking and sticking if I did sit down so I knew I needed to move or lie down however it was a good few hours before I managed to even get to my bed as I had other duties to attend to. I confess that when we did get home our family sat down and shared a bottle of wine ( or two) while we reflected on the day. I became a 'tipsy hipster' not ideal but we live and learn !
I had a physiotherapy appointment yesterday for the assessment of my neck and shoulder pain, I seem to have a problem around about the C4 area to which she intends to apply light traction and work the trigger points.
I have a marked rotation and spasm in the shoulder area and I have a 'leaning to the left gait' which she feels is because I'm compensating for my right hip .
However she is not free until September 11th. So I'm going to look at it this week and see if I can see someone sooner.
I'm getting nearer to my operation date and I can't jolly well wait in fact if someone kidnapped me today And could do it I would be "as chuffed as mint balls" as we used to say
So my plans for this weekend is to enjoy!
The children have everything they need for school next week, I have everything to pack in a bag should I get the last minute call for surgery this week
Another good friend of mine is hosting an informal gathering this evening so my family and sisters are going as well have a jolly good catch up.
Tomorrow I intend to get up early Go out for breakfast and do a long walk at a local country park and ' blow off some cobwebs 'weather permitting and see if I can manage to do some photography .
@ChrissyW welcome home!! I missed you! Tell me more about your travels? How is your hubby? Fancy swooning in front of you after all these years! - must be that new hip of yours!
BTW I've shown my children Afroman and oh! How we giggled ( they assumed the "mother!" facial expression)!!
@ahipgma How are you 10 days in ?
@ Calgal how are you? It's your Pilates assessment soon ? I'd love to know how you get on
I'm back at work full time after Tuedsay so will see how that goes - I still have the option of working from home but enjoy being in the office and socialisation is so good for my mental health I think.
For now I'll wish you all a stunning Saturday
Love and hugs :loveshwr::roseshwr::loveshwr:

Hi @Mayhip8 , glad you're sounding upbeat today, yesterday sounds like a hard, emotional day. The holiday was lovely, we were in Lloret and I had visions of it being a cross between Benidorm and Blackpool (@ahipgma i will not explain but not pleasant or anything like our trips) however we were at rage 'posh' bit, beautiful scenery and coastal pathways around the historic parts ( despite clumsy hubby falling in this area!!). Food was lovely and I indulged more than once in paella and also the dulce de leche/flan at desert. It was all in all lovely, very Spanish (despite no flamenco but include some sangria!) and the weather, bar one day, was amazing, if not too hot at times. We are out for a meal tonight and feeling special as we are going to a Michelin starred restaurant so who knows what I will be eating. Have to start thinking about what to wear soon too.
Weird day weather wise here, it threw it down at one point (yes I got caught in it) but now the sun is out.
Strangely @Mayhip8 ive been having trouble with my left shoulder. It started early on in my recovery, when I was continually heaving myself up. I thought it would be better by now but it doesn't seem to be. I'm keeping an eye on it and hoping to massage and rub on various lotions and potions in order to avoid a GP visit.
Well ladies, catch you all later. Big hugs to you all xxx

Hi all!
Feels good to pick up the threads and check in!
@Mayhip8 thought about you lots and glad you got thru your tribute ok.
I never realized how low many seats are everywhere especially the dreaded public toilet seats where you look down and realize you're going to feel like you're sitting on the floor. Ari came to see us yesterday and I watch in amazement as she can do that squat and spring up thing that toddlers can do, so strong and flexible. She is growing and has added on a few new words,knows all her body parts and all the sounds the animals make etc, just a joy.
Here in the US its Labor Day weekend, unofficial kickoff to fall, all the children back at school, sort of a bookend to the summer the other being Memorial Day, and I remember we were together then as well, all recovering.
So @ChrissyW, are you back full time in earnest and your school year is in full swing, all summer breaks done? My home PT guy reassured me that it's a full year to complete recovery, sounds like you are pretty nearly there, able to take the trip to Spain, etc.
And Mayhip, I guess you are going back full time till right before your op, then off again for a while? I've pretty much decided I'm done with hospital nursing altogether, but am taking my time to decide what if any kind of nursing to do otherwise. At 63 there are all kinds of routes to take and I'm pretty much looking at the new year as being the time I would start something new?
This recovery is interesting and a bit of a struggle I am just so impatient to be healed and relatively pain free and off the narcs etc, etc. Because I did it all once before and do I really have to go thru all the stages again with this one again? Well, yeah. I will be interested to hear your take on the second time around.
Will you have the same approach, same hospital, etc,this next time.
Promised myself I would try to start to get up and do stuff throughout the day, do my exercises and some cane walking.
Have lovely evening and weekend!
Love and hugs.

Morning everyone. Well today is the last day of the summer holidays for me @ahipgma . To,or row is a teacher training day (for any doubters we do actually do some training as well as pre work on these days) then everything starts full on Tuesday. I just need to put a couple of ppt slides together today in case I'm ask to speak to the whole school about post 16 results but otherwise I'm going to make the most of today. Interesting that your pt @ahipgma referred to the full 12 months as I recently had a conversation with someone ( I so can't remember who!) and they said the same. I am finding I can do more and did wear kitten heels last night rather than flats and the only thing that felt uncomfortable were my feet (I think they were asking what they had been squeezed in to!) @Mayhip8 do your children go back Mon or Tues this week? How are they feeling about the year ahead or even the end of the school holidays? I remember my boys being quite excited about the first day back, catching up with everyone, new timetables and teachers and then coming home after day one moaning! @Mayhip8 you mentioned about going to work and the benefit to your psychological wellbeing and I'd agree with that 100% because I was getting so down mentally and as tired as I may have felt physically each day being around people in 'my other ' home ground at work helped so much.
@ahipgma it will be interesting to see what alternate route you embark upon with your nursing. Any ideas what kind of path your fancying? Your comments on Ari just bring wonderful pictures to mind, she sounds like the cutest but a right little character to add. Oh and your comments on the height of toilets, it is amazing how low some are. I actually made the comment to my hubby that I was amazed how low so spanish toilets were, I still find myself balancing my way down and I'm presuming @ahipgma your back on the raised seat at home.
Anyway I will stop waffling on for now and probably pop back later for some updates from you all. Xx

Oh mayhip! Such a long grueling day, physically and emotionally ! We all know so well how much it hurts when you've done far too much, but the obligations aren't finished yet and your poor hips have to soldier on. I think you deserved that wine or two or three ast night and a BIG rest today. Wish you could have a few more days before getting back to work, even though it's clear you're enjoying it mentally. September is here so not long now till number 2 is done and dusted. Sending you healing hugs. :console2:

:flwrysmile:@ChrissyW @ahipgma @Calgal so.........
Plans changed slightly last night and I ended up hosting the gathering at my house :loll:
From 6 pm onwards we had chats and laughs and drinks and nibbles and then we ordered a massive selection of curries to be delivered and sat round the table all 10 of us eating drinking and being Merry and probably very loud! because we ended up playing party games which included lines from songs - Somebody reads out a line from a song and your team has to finish the like the song off, well it just ended up like a sing song for all!
People left Or went to bed at various times but my daughter and my sister stayed up had one of those late /night early morning chats about the world, The past, the future .... ! I finally got to sleep at 03.30 am and stayed asleep for a good 5 1/2 hours which is relatively unheard-of for me and I feel fantastic this morning! Will probably go out for brunch and a walk soon .
I finally purchased a cushion from Argos yesterday - it's a wheelchair memory foam cushion and it is so comfortable I really wish I'd have done this back in May!
Chrissy my children go back on Wednesday can't believe how quickly the holidays went. I'm looking forward to the next time when I'm well enough to go on a proper holiday rather than a staycation with days out here and there.
So my lovelies I'm going to leave it there for now and pop back later because I'm really hungry and I need to get ready to go out!

Have a super Sunday hipster sisters :loveshwr::flwrysmile:

Happy Sunday!
We're all in the same boat, that even people without kids at home can feel, the start of school and fall! Always exciting and challenging, september here the weather changes a bit, the shops all display fall decorations, some Christmas too( cringe!---wayyyyy too early for that.)
Kitten heels, @ChrissyW ! Now there is a return to normalcy for a woman, getting more wear out of a shoe collection.
My daughter once did a solo for teacher training day, she is a cellist (now Ari's mom) she was out at a park with friends a few days before and got poison ivy all over one side of her face! She was so proud to play in front of all the teachers up on stage, but turned her chair so her poison ivy side didnt show. She did wonderfully well. Played " The Swan". What mems as my kids would say. Miss having children at home!! You're right about Ari, though.
She is like a little dark curly haired sprite, so beloved by 4 doting grandparents, fed pasta by us and curries by her Indian grandma-what a gift.
@Mayhip8 I was so happy to hear about your gathering! It sounds like what everyone needed, and a celebration of life.
Everyone settled and moving on. @Calgal, are you retired too? I think I will feel better once I get clearance to drive. I dont miss work but do miss the people the collegiality is important and stimulating.
I havent put my feet on the floor yet this morning but I think I'm finally feeling a little better. Like last time. Sometimes the incision hurts, then it jumps to the thigh then the knee... but when the PT guy ranges my hip, no arthritis... gotta love that part
Enjoy the day
Love to all.:loveshwr::loveshwr::loveshwr:

a wheelchair memory foam cushion and it is so comfortable I really wish I'd have done this back in May!
I couldn't have lived without mine! Aren't they just the best?!? Well better late than never. :whistle:. On a good note, on Thursday I returned to a restaurant that I went to about 3 weeks ago (with my trusty cushion back then) but didn't bring the cushion this time and, drumroll, didn't need it at all! No squirming through the entire dinner! So there is definitely light at the end of the THR recovery tunnel.:yes!:. You'll be there soon with both hips.

Lots of positivity today. @Mayhip8 i can't remember the last time I pulled an all night into the wee hours session just chatting with friends and family and @ahipgma Ari is going to have an amazing palate as she grows up and what a luck girl, two of my favourite foods, pasta and curry (though not together I don't think but I'm adventurous with food so I'd probably give it a try. Never say never!) and @Calgal really pleased you had a positive, squirm free trip to the restaurant, it's a great feeling isn't it and soon the 4 of us will all be in that position. Love, hugs and positive sunbeams to you all xxx:flwrysmile::friends:

Good morning to all!
Though it is almost afternoon here.
@Mayhip8 we are into your month!!!
Are you getting psyched for your matched set? I am 2 weeks out on Wednesday, it's been kind of a drag and I'm still having pain but I think I've turned the corner a little. This week is dressing removal and permission to drive, so only taking tramadol and hoping to cut back on that.
Still having ambulation pain but PT encouraging cane use a little more over the walker so trying that, used the cane when beginning to drive.
My two girls and Ari will be with us overnight on Thurs as Anne (Ari's mom) is going to fly to Minnesota to run a half marathon with a girlfriend, so Gina (younger daughter) will care for Ari while Anne runs. My hub driving them to the airport. So I have a nice fish dinner planned that I am going to cook, the first since surgery, so hoping for the stamina to stand at the sink and stove! Friends have been very kind bringing us meals so I havent had to cook much. I guess all are back to work, you with your scrubs and @ChrissyW perhaps with kitten heels!?
@Calgal we had floods of rain last night so I'll have to check out my garden. I want to order one of those garden kneelers-- it's just what I need. But fall will be here before I know it and all I'll need then is a rake!
Well going to try and go shower. Hub is off today and we're going outside for short walk.
Have a nice one my dears:flwrysmile:

Full day at work and now deep breathe! Doesn't feel like I've been away and we'll be fully back in to the swing of things tomorrow once students start too. I must say I'm looking forward to seeing them and have prepared my 2 motivational assemblies specific to each year group. @ahipgma there may well be kitten heels to,or row as all my previous work shoes have higher heels or are boots and it's not quite boit weather yet. Otherwise I'll have to wear plimsolls which will look very funny with professional work clothing ( I suppose making students laugh would be A good start) hope my hippy sisters have had a good day. Did you enjoy the walk @ahipgma? @Mayhip8 how you feeling now your back in to the swing of work and are you starting any prep for hip #2? @Calgal im hoping you avoided the rain today if you were in your garden at all. It bounced it down this afternoon here, luckily each time I was either I school or in the car driving home.
Anyway ladies have a good evening xx

:kittykiss::flwrysmile: Good morning all

It's a bright and sunny morning here, it's got that sort of Crispness in the air that late summer and the promise of Autumn brings.
Autumn is my very favourite time of the year
I liked nothing more than long walks with early morning or late afternoon sun shining through the changes of the colours of the leaves .
I'm working the next two days (well Twilight shifts ) and I'm off Thursday , so with luck I will go for a nice long walk then.

The children Will be back at school and hubby will be at work tomorrow so I get that sense of calm and peace that comes with having some physical and emotional space in your own home with hopefully no interruption. Much as I love my family and they've all been brilliant it does get a bit hectic at times but I do like my own peace.
It's kind of a strange but positive feeling to read and feel how we're all progressing. It's like we started to watch a box set back in spring and got to know the characters and became fond of them And want to know more , now the series is established we can see our lives unfold in a more relaxed manner and you get the feeling this is a long running show . Ands it's great because the support and friendships that exists.

@ahipgma you are doing so well just nearly 2 weeks out to be even thinking of driving again :wow:
when will your dressing come off come off? You sound like you have a lovely week ahead with your daughter and Ari staying with you.

@Calgal do you have any plans this week- is it Pilates today?
@ChrissyW hats off to you ! I'm In awe of you returning for this term and all the new exciting adventures and hard work you have ahead of you, I hope you still Take it easy on yourself and get some more recovery time from the long days . may your lessons be manageable and your staff room be full of coffee and tasty treats :good-bad:

I called the waiting list officer yesterday and have been told I'm pencilled in for the 27th of September, I was just checking as I've not had a letter yet. The only prep I'm doing is to keep my self free of cuts and grazes, and to get my neck mended with having physio it's so painful. That horrid trap nerve pain which just doesn't go away.
I've got a few minor jobs to do today before I come back to my afternoon nest
my shift starts at six and I like to do something with in the day to get some fresh air so I'll pop out now.
Keep up the good work ladies,:dancy: what a fabulous bunch we are:roseshwr:

Much love:loveshwr::loveshwr::flwrysmile:
