@lennie......I'm thinking Jo may need some additional details. I know she will about the meds. You've said what medication you have but not how frequently you are taking it. She will need to know how much you take and when during the day and night.

I have been taking my medication 4 times a day and supplementing with advil

IMHO you are doing too much exercise. It's very hard to say no to PTs but I started off by saying to mine, if it hurts, I'm not doing it and then found out that was her practice anyway. I only saw her twice and she never touched my knee and advised if it hurts don't do it again, rest , ice and walk around. It worked for me and I never had significant pain or discomfort. Hope you are feeling better soon.

That information about the meds is helpful. Does the prescription say take 1-2 pills every 4-6 hours? And are you taking one or two pills on your schedule of every 6 hours?

two things jump out at me. One, if you take extra pain meds before PT, it is easy to injure yourself and not even know it. The pain meds mask any injury. I took my proscribed doses--with no extra before PT.

Second, was the line "Expand ROM"!! Does that mean the PT is pushing on your knee to get more rom? IF so, that is the problem right there. You cannot work to get more rom, it will happen once the swelling goes down. If someone is pushing and shoving your knee, they are CAUSING more swelling and pain and thus decreasing your rom.

Think of your knee as a garden hose, if it is filled with water, can you bend it? will bending break the hose? When the water is gone, the hose bends easily---just like your knee.

I never did anything outside of PT---no sets of 10 twice a day or anything else. I did make a point of walking my dogs every day---at least a little, and I do have an exercise bike. But, really most of the time, I was resting and elevating:
Elevating your leg to control swelling and pain
Using ice

It seems that your PT is the source of the level 8 pain---why not ask the PT office for a new one---a PT who has been trained within the last five years, when the thinking about rehabbing a TKR began to change. Yours is using the techniques of 10 years ago which have been found to be harmful.

My pain scale today is 3. Tomorrow it will probably be an 8.
Why will it be an 8?
Percocet 5-325. I have been taking my medication 4 times a day and supplementing with Advil
One or two tablets? At only 10 days out, you should be taking two tablets each time.
Moderate swelling
Swelling is a form of pain so you need to ensure you are taking the proper dose.
Almost all the way straight and 95 degrees
Jolly good!
5. Icing my knee around the clock with about an 30 minute break in between.
6. I keep my leg elevated in the bed on a pillow and in the recliner on a pillow.
Okay
7. I go to the bathroom and microwave food if needed.
Okay

My comments in bold
3 times a day - do once a day and none at all at the weekend
Hamstring stretch x10 - okay
Quad stretch 4 sets of 10 - okay

At PT. Bike riding 5 minutes just to stretch and then reverse
Hamstring stretch 2 sets of 10 - okay
leg lift 2 sets of 10 - you mean straight leg raises?
expand ROM 2 sets of 10 - perhaps you'd be kind enough to explain these as I don't know what you mean

The prescription is for one pill only. I said an 8 because I had PT today. Yes straight leg raises. Expand ROM....they give me a harness and I pull my leg back

PT causing an 8 in pain is a definite no-no. It just irritates and inflames those wounded soft tissues that are trying to heal and it can set your recovery back.

Please don't do anything like pulling on a harness to help your knee to bend. It isn't necessary and it can do harm. Your knee will bend all on its own, if you just concentrate on reducing the swelling.

Did your therapist tell you that you only have a certain amount of time to achieve ROM? That's a complete myth that should have died long ago. ROM can continue to improve for a year, or even longer, after a knee replacement.

Then you don't need to try and help your knee to bend. Let it recuperate and it will bend all on its own, without being pushed or pulled.
Concentrate on using lots of rest, ice and elevation, as this helps to bring down the swelling that prevents your knee from bending.

It's more effective to let the bend happen by using your own muscles, rather than by using anything to assist the bend.

Just think about it this way. If you had broken 2 of the major bones in your leg, had cartilage removed and a stem hammered into those broken bones would you think doing exercises at this point makes a lot of sense? I would think not. Give yourself a little time to heal and let the swelling go down. Make sure you are elevating correctly with toes above nose.

Well due to logistics and USPS I am out of pain meds. Making it so far but it is a rough ride.

Oooh, petal! I am sooo sorry. I have two boxes of Tramadol in my cupboard but it's not going to be much use me posting them to you!

Lennie, can you call your doc and tell them what happened and ask for a temporary script to fill at a local pharmacy? No sense suffering if you can get a fix for it.

Briusing wise when I had my surgery in July I was horrified at the briusing and swelling. My briusing went right to my toes, my feet were black and it took weeks to go, back of my knee was completely black!

My friends entire leg was purple. It put me off for about a year.

I wish you well, it's a horrific surgery and the recovery is very slow. As weeks go by things slowly improve and you'll be able to gain movement and start to see a light at the end of the tunnel xxx
