THR July Hip Replacement - When will I ski again?<

My boss is stressed out, understaffed without me there. Another person will be in Hong Kong next week &I foolishly thought I'd be back to work after a week of recovery. I'm just not meeting her expectations I guess.

New York is a 2.5 - 3 hour car ride. I plan to stop for lunch along the way. We have a hotel on Long Island and will only go into the city to see the show. Otherwise plan to relax by the pool & get sunshine
It's up to me & my doctor when I return to work not my boss.

Thanks for your reply.

I wish she could switch bodies with me for a few days, because only then would she understand.

I'm guessing she would.
We do!
Hang in there and try not to feel guilty!

Inconsiderate, nonetheless...clearly not taking your best interest to heart
at only 5 weeks post op / major surgery.
Don't know about you, but I had difficulty sitting in a car for over 30-45 minutes for a couple months.
I got extremely uncomfortable. I think stopping for lunch halfway is wise.
The rest of it sounds doable. Safe travels. I hope you have a great time!
@Lski

I won't feel guilty. I've worked 12 years of understaffed busy seasons with this company. It's time for me to rest and heal properly otherwise I risk a fall, possible dislocation, and more surgery. The last thing I need. Thanks for the support.

I'm fine in the car, I ice along the way & my daughter or mother in law will do the driving. Hoping for a good time before going back to work the following day.

Wow! Look at you! I think you are doing more than I am at the point I'm at. Of course, in a week and a half, I'll be back to work full time, so we will see how that goes. I'm feeling quite nervous about it. I'm glad to hear that you are not feeling guilty about taking the time you need to heal. It's hard to say no to someone when you know they need the help, but stick to your guns. :flwrysmile:

@Lski, sounds like my fellow Pennsylvania resident is starting to really pick up speed ... four weeks and you're doing so much ... I love your idea of icing your hip during a car ride. I'm going to steal that idea and tuck it away for future use ... I go for my preop on Monday August 20th at the Rothman Bensalem location ... Just got some dental work and dental clearance ...

Here's to you confidently feeling good about taking the time you need off ... You must be a real go-getter to think you were going to be off from work for only a week. I'm planning on taking the entire three months that my employer allows.

Anyway, love hearing your stories about daughter learning to drive, going to a concert, the shore and all of that ... down the shore, as we locals say in our distinct way. Keep up the great recovery ...

Hi! :hi:
Just noticed it's your One Month Anniversary! :happydance:
Hope it's a good day and a great weekend!
@Lski

If I recall correctly, you indicated you would be seeing your OS soon. Let us know how it goes.

Yes it's my 1 month anniversary. I did see the doc. for my post op. visit today. I had to request an X-Ray ( they apparently don't typically do them at the first visit). I was granted an X-Ray, but then asked for both lying & standing positions. The technician called the surgeon who agreed to just do the standing X-Ray. The visit was with my OS's assistant. He didn't show me the X-Ray but answered all my questions and said I can take a bath and swim. The numbness will last awhile (18-24 months). Swelling may persist up to 3 months. He agreed to water therapy but not to start for 2 more weeks. He's on board with me returning to work on a part time basis working from home for the next month starting ,with 4 hr. days until 9/3 then increase to 5 hrs per day the following week, 6 hrs next week, 7 hrs next week then be full time by 9/24. My range of motion is as expected. He said my hip bone was very arthritic and definitely needed to be replaced. My biggest issue is lack of sleep & energy drain. He said at 8 weeks I should be able to sleep 8 hrs consecutively. In the meantime I can try melatonin or Tylenol pm. At 8 week I can ride a stationary bike in the gym. To prolong the life of my hip I should avoid running & jumping.

The day didn't start out too good. I awoke at 2:00 am having to run to the bathroom (,had the runs & tummy ache) . I couldn't fall asleep so did some reading & finished the book I started a month ago ( Enjoying your Journey by Joyce Meyer). I got up at 5 and showered. Then dressed & went downstairs for breakfast. Emptied the dishwasher & fed the rabbit. My husband awoke at 7:30 to do some yard work before the heat of the day. The new laptop arrived so I tried to set it up with Kaspersky anti-virus software but failed miserably. I couldn't log into the account, called tech support was told it would take at least an hour to load, looked at the time on the laptop which said 11:15 & freaked out. I needed to nap before my dr. apt at 1:45. I got my husband to take over the Kaspersky issue. I went to bed then realized it was only 9:30 am ( clock hadn't been updated on new pc yet) . I apologized for freaking out but was informed that our network is compromised & a specialist would need to fix it. Figuring this will cost us an hourly charge I said we just wanted a password reset. Anyway the tech was supposed to call us back in 2 hours but didn't, so we will need to figure this out another day.

After my dr. visit I met with a realtor to see some houses. Only 2_are options. Most were not to our liking. I'm waiting for a pre- approval letter to see if we can offer the asking price or not.

I'm home now resting after this big day. I'm going to try Tylenol pm with hopes of longer hours of sleep tonight.

Oh...elusive sleep.
My biggest goal that seemed the last part to achieve.
Night stalker, my husband called me.
Plenty of sympathy here.
I just had to be satisfied with power naps when able until Finally I could get consecutive hours.
Hope your weekend is relaxing!

Great office visit yesterday. Thanks for updating.
I hope sleep was better last night.
Wishing you a relaxing weekend!
@Lski

Update you: I tried the Tylenol pm, but still woke up at 2am after only 4 hrs of sleep. Not sure if it was the thunderstorm that did it or not but thunder woke my husband so he replaced my ice. It was a couple hours before I got back to sleep but did get to sleep again from about 4 - 7:30.
I went to see another house for sale with my daughter, did some errands with her, then headed home for lunch & napped from 2-4 pm. Awoke did some research on mortgages had dinner relaxed until bedtime and then slept 6 hours 10:30 - 4:30 AM. I didn't take the Tylenol pm. I continued to take magnesium which I started doing a couple days ago. I read somewhere it helps with sleep. Maybe it's kicking in. Maybe I can skip the nap today & get 7 or 8 hours sleep tonight.

Update: I made it to N.Y. City and saw the wonderful broadway play - Wicked. It was a great performance. The choreography & music was amazing. I really empathized with Elpheba and learned that Glenda the "good" witch wasn't as good as I recalled from Wizard of OZ.

Driving in Manhattan was an experience I'll never forget. Our hotel was in Long Island City so we had to go through Manhattan and the Lincoln tunnel to get there. I almost went through a red light when I was distracted by the J-walking hot dog stand. This was after being slowed down by a 3_wheeled bicycle & a ricochet that were only moving 5 mph. Left & right turns were blocked by swarms of pedestrians crossing the street. Letting my daughter drive once we got back to PA was a breeze after that. We even let her try the highway on the way home from the dance wear store yesterday afternoon.

Anyway, I'm anxious about returning to work this morning. It's been 1 month and 5 days since surgery. My boss isn't too thrilled that I'm returning on a Transitional Work Arrangement- TWA ( gradually on part time basis 20 hrs per week until next Friday, 25 hrs per week the following week, 30 hrs the next then full time 40 hrs after that). On Monday, I was informed by my disability case manager that forms to return to work would possibility be required by my employer but not necessarily when I asked him to send the return to work from to my Dr. to complete. I then emailed my boss to let her know my plans for a gradual return to work starting Thursday. On Tuesday I read her response which She asked if I was required to only work part time & if I had a Drs note. I didn't because my dr was expecting my disability insurance carrier or my employer to provide any required forms for him to complete. I searched my employer' s intranet for information on returning to work after short term disability and sent what I found to my manager. I also left a message with my dr's nurse requesting a note to provide my boss outlining the gradual return to work schedule & went on the Rothman Institute portal where a patient can request standard disability forms to be completed & requested a note explaining why I was only cleared to work part time. Then I called my disability case manager & told him that my boss required a dr. Note outlining my return to work clearance. I requested that he contact my dr office. He said he'd call but still didn't have any forms for them to complete. So I went to NY hoping this issue would be resolved by the time I returned. The next afternoon I checked my email to find another reply from my boss telling me that my disability case manager is supposed to have the TWA form for my Dr to complete.
So I called him but just got voice mail so hit zero to get another claims manager. This lady didn't know what a TWA from was so transferred me back to the voice mail. I left a message then hit zero again, this time I spoke with someone who at least listened to me and found my case manager & eventually transferred me to him when he was available. I learned that the TWA from was faxed to my Dr. Tuesday but may take a week to get back. So I asked what I'm supposed to do tomorrow, go to work or not. He said go to work so I said you'll need to notify my boss that you are allowing me to return with the TWA form pending. He agreed to do that for me. What a run- around and a waste of an hour of my nap time.

It's early 4:15 am EST, since I've only been able to sleep 5 hr. stretches. Going to shut my eyes,, listen to some Caitlin Jane & try to fall back asleep.

Which was more nerve wracking...you driving or letting daughter drive?:heehee:
Sorry for all the red tape...hope you got some rest!
Hope today is a good day!:tada:

Hi, @Lski , I've been catching up on your hip journey; you have a lot going on, lady :wow:

I wanted to drop in on your thread to wish you the best on your first day back; hoping the anxiety has eased a bit - I understand how stressful work can be on top of healing (I've actually started doing the 4-7-8 Breath Meditation to help me keep my balance when things were feeling emotionally rocky; it helps me a great deal).

Cheering for you!! :yay:

How fun! I'd love to see a Broadway play one day.
I hope you're able to ease back into work comfortably.
I also hope your boss goes on a loooong vacay. She sounds....difficult at best. :heehee:
Let us know how your return goes.
Best of luck!
@Lski

Hi @Lski,

Good luck on your return to work today. I know first hand how annoying the runaround with HR/Return to Work folks can be. I am a manager myself and have several staff that have long term health issues. I feel a bit for your manager because he/she clearly knows what is required to allow you to return to work, but your case manager (and the others who you were transferred to) clearly do not... even though it is there entire job. I went through this extensively with my staff and many times had to fight for my staff to ensure HR did their job (HR handles return to work in my company). It is very frustrating for a manager, believe me. And my staff... my goodness, they could have gone on stress leave just from going through this process. Let's just say I do not have much love for HR and their draconian processes.

Of course, I am a manager who actually cares about his staff. I have worked in many environments where that is not the case. It seems from your posts that your manager is a caring one... which is good. Hopefully, your return goes smoothly.

Cheers

Thanks to all who have wished me well on my return to work. Today wasn't too terrible. It started out very well with an announcement that the project I've been working on was nominated for a CEO Champion Award and we won. So I am invited to N.Y. City to celebrate with the Sr. Leaders and be recognized at a dinner out & breakfast the next morning. That's was very good exciting news. Last time I was awarded one of these was in 2012 and all I received was lunch at a nice restaurant down the street from our office. This is much better.

The morning flew reading email and figuring out where things stand on each clients renewals & quotes. I worked 3 hours then stopped to make the train reservation to NY. Next thing I knew it was lunch time, then there was a meeting for that project that was just awarded so called into that and then my work day was done. My boss is in Europe this week so didn't hear much from her. A few co-workers welcomed me back. It was a good first day.

Glad it went well for you. Congrats on the award.
Another trip to NYC, lucky you! Sounds like fun.
I hope tomorrow runs as smoothly as today.
Then it's....Hello Weekend! Hope yours is good!
