Hi Rich,

It took me 7 months from my 1st THR to lie on operated side. Like everyone said I would try and at first it was just a few seconds and every day I built up till one day I fell asleep. Same with my 2nd THR but I am 6 months out and just slept for about 5 hours on my operated side the other night. It will come, patience, patience, patience. I think we go through this to learn patience. all the best to you.

I know it takes patience for the rehab and trying to sleep on your side however I also know that I must be patient otherwise I'm going to suffer the consequences, which are quite possibly hurt myself and I can't afford that not at this point of my recovery, I've done alot of work to strengthen my hipand now that I'm walking around wth no assistance clearly shows I've done the work needed, I just need to let go of the control and my day will come to sleep on my side.

You have come a long way Rich. Walking unaided and now getting around on your own. Sometimes it's helpful to look back at when you first started posting after your THR. In only a few weeks you have progressed very well. Just keep doing what you are doing! :thumb:

I dont want to sound cocky or conceeded but i know I've come a long way because I still think about how difficult it was to get in and out of bed , to the point I would SCREAM OUT OF FRUTRATION,because I couldn't do it on my own, now I bounce out of bed, well I actually dont sleep in my bed because I'm afraid I'll end up on my side and that alne opens up a hole can of worms.

My progress when I actually think about it blows me away,I am very fortunate to belong to this awesome site because otherwise if I didn't belong to BS I seriously doubt I would be in the position I'm in today.

THANK YOU SO MUCH JAYCEY FOR YOUR AMAZINGLY KIND WORDS- PER USUAL. !

Hi Diane, I think i'm going to give it a try and lay on my side, operated side, I know it was tender the last time I tried it but with time situations things do change..seven moths though huh, before you were able to comfortably lay on your operated side...that's a long time though isn't it. ?

Yes, Rich, it is a long time but that's how I heal...always take longer, just me and my body. If my doctor tells me something might take 3 weeks, it might take me 3 months but I know that about myself and as long as I get there it is OK. You are doing great and the day will come when you sleep on your side without even thinking about it. We have so much to be thankful for. Someone, quite a while ago, called this surgery the "overnight miracle" because one day after the awful pain is gone. The healing pain is different, not so debilitating. Hang in there...

Things certainly don't happen overnight, especially for, things in my life have never come easy but I've truly accepted that because its always bittersweet in the end for example as you know I'm a disabled veteran I had a horrific experience in the Navy and when i got out I filed a claim with the veterans affairs and they denied my claim , well after 5 long years of fighting they FINALLY. Gave me my 100% disability , the wait was awful( it actually took 18 yrs because I got out in 1992) when it finally settled in my favor it was well with the wait even though I almost gave up several times so I know what you mean, i need to have patience , lately I've been pretty good with this and its now paying off, i waited 2 1/2 months for this surgery, it was so worth it.

Rich, just keep trying the lying on your side every few days until it gets easier. You never know how things are progressing unless you test them out now and again. You'll not do any harm, it just might hurt a bit because the wound is still fresh but that isn't always a harbinger of doom! It's just sore flesh that hasn't healed enough yet to do what you want to.

Just keep trying it a bit .... mmm, maybe not yet, still a bit sore ..... maybe in a few more days, and so on.
(Of course, I AM talking about lying on your side! :hysterical:)

I have actually layed ( if layed is a word)on my non operated side and my operated side began to throb yet again so I didn't even attempt to lay on the surgical side because I knew it would be tender, but slowly surely I'll get there.

Why does it ALWAYS seem like I'm the only one online late at night with all the nice people who belong to this god given site - just saying:dancy: ya know I do have questions at night too...hee hee. ! !

Hey Rich.... It is dinner time Sat night here, so just popped by to say hello.. sorry, can't stay on tonight, have to study...

you will eventually be able to sleep on your side hon... Time and that horrible word we all hate... Patience... hugs xx

Rich, Sleep will come, Relax and remember take a deep breath. When the hip is ready to be laid on, it will let you without hurting. Its making the call not you. You have come far but until full recover you will have ups and down. Just go with it. take care and have a good weekend. :doggieshmooze:Tashia:friends:

It is that simple Rich, one thing we have no control over is the tine it takes for our bodies to heal. We can only do what we can to help it..

You will be fine my friend, it is still such early days for you. I am six months and still toss and turn trying to sleep some nights... And I still sleep with the pillow between my legs..

Hang in there buddy :)

I think overall my body is healing pretty good, each day I'm getting stronger and feeling healthier , you can't ask for more then that, I just need to keep in mind when things get tough that they will pass like did before and no matter stay positive and I'll be just fine but only if i do the footwork , like my excercises and walking.

Excellent plan, Rich!

Fantastic Rich... You have the winning formula now xx

Today I was FINALLY able to lay on my operated side and actually relax for at least 10 minutes and overall it felt OK with no pain however there was tenderness and discomfort after about 10 minutes so i rolled over on my back, I was quite impressed because last Saturday when i tried laying on the operated side it was far to tender and I had no choice but to give up, so once again I have come a long way, I am however also laying on my non operated side with no problems with a pillow between my legs length wise from my my waist down to my ankles and its actually pretty comfortable , and safe.

Sandy I may have the winning formula however do I have the mental toughness to go the extra mile when things become chaotic.....a resounding....

YES MAM

You bet you do :)

You know Rich if you spend time reading other threads, you will find the forum are full of vulnerable folk, recovering from difficult surgeries and some very difficult ongoing challenges in life.. When you really think about it we are all the same, just trying go survive.

In my case I am trying to hold onto my job, for the next two years.... All to ensure we will be able to live.

Life is tough for all of us in our own ways:) xxxx
