THR Hippity Doo Dah!<

My first physio later this morning. Part of me is really dreading it but in part I'm okay too. I certainly don't feel like going out 2 days in a row and at 7:30am (right now) I would be happier to go back to bed. :mcoffee:
I decided to go to a physio that I worked with 5 years ago who was very gentle and really listened to me. The practice isn't my OS's first choice but it has better hours and has a lot more to offer like supported walkways to work of gait, stairs, big mirrors and treadmills for later. The one my OS sent me to pre-op had little of that equipment and spent a lot of time on deep massage which I don't want. They also switched you around with different PT's all the time. Wet with heavy skies today so will be happy to get home for a delicious afternoon nap! :sleeep:

7.30 AM urghhhh!!! Hope the physio goes well... I’ve not got my first physio until tomorrow...
to be honest I don’t really want to go... hope you get some real benefit from yours today & get a nap in afterwards @Carriemay60

Hope you treated yourself after your PT and were able to come home and rest.
All this temporary recovery business will certainly have great rewards.
Wishing you a wonderful Wednesday.:tada:

You sound like you are doing great @Carriemay60 Sounds like you are healing very well too. I’m just starting to read about scar treatments. It’s taken my staples a long time to heal. Glad you’re in such great shape early on. Hope your PT was helpful. :flwrysmile:

Physio was a bit disappointing to say the least. That PT seems to have gotten a lot tougher in the 4 years since I've seen her. Testing all the ROM, making me try all kinds of crazy tight heel slides, standing on op leg. I told her my groin had been very sore which she seemed to think is a pulled muscle. I told her that I did believe PT had to cross the line between good stretching of tight muscles and pain. She argued I had to push a bit harder because if I didn't address the atrophy and muscle loss/tightness quickly after surgery I would loose the opportunity. Oddly enough when I got there and we were first exchanging hellos she asked me when my surgery was. When I told her she said, "wow, they get you guys in here early now"!
So yesterday evening I felt miserable and could hardly refreeze ice packs fast enough. At 2am I was woken with searing groin pain.
I have to keep going with my surgeons expectations until I see him May 15th or he will never help me again but I figure after that he won't know the difference. PT said once a week for now and will do some light stretching at home but will try and fake it at PT sessions if it's stuff I am not into doing. I also plan on telling her how much pain the groin was in after seeing her.

oh no... the last thing you need at the moment is more pain... take a couple of days rest to let it settle. Please don’t let her do that again next week...
I hadn’t found BS until my 8th week my last THR & was walking like a nut case as they said just walk and I did too much... I’m sure it hampered my progress & gave me pain!
Josephine’s ‘Hips don’t need that much exercise’ set me free... please take note @ Carriemay60 you’ve seen so much on here of people pushing too hard too soon...[emoji3590][emoji3590]

@Carriemay60
I'm sorry to hear that physio is tough. For hips I didn't do any physio. Well, I went to physio sessions but they just watched the way that I was walking and recommended things to improve my gait.
Both of my hips have healed really well and I don't get any pain.

The knee is a different beast. I am doing some physio to help with the bend. Its the same physio so where I go they obviously agree that no exercises are needed for the hips, other than day to day activities and walking when you are up to it.

Oh no! It makes me so angry to hear about bad PT. It can be so helpful with the right compassionate therapist... and just as detrimental on the flip side.

Hope you can get some relief from that pain today!

@Hoppy Nanny When we left PT yesterday I felt like I wanted to cry and just wanted to come home. I knew hubby was making me a hot lunch and then I had planned on going to bed so that's what I did. My son snuck out when I was napping and got us a lovely carrot cake with lots of cream cheese icing for dessert last night.
Peter had that molar pulled yesterday and despite my warnings was very surprised at how hard it was. They had to break the tooth into a few pieces to get it out. He was trying so hard not to complain but finally was convinced to take some tylenol.

@Bionic That's exactly what I want and need is help with my gait, etc. I really don't mind some gentle stretches and eventually a bit of strengthening because the atrophy is noticeable to the naked eye from a distance but I am sure that can be effectively without crossing that line into pain.

@JennyLynne I agree completely!

I’m so sorry you felt like that ...
hoping that carrot cake helped.. it sounds divine...
Poor Peter... I hate having teeth out... it feels so barbaric.. hoping it feels better today for him.
My little Ruby had hers out yesterday & is back to normal today [emoji3590]

@Carriemay60 I have to agree with all here and you. It is not necessary for you to suffer, even for strengthening and gait. I'm on my third week of PT and other than a little achy soreness, have had no pain. My Achilles tendon us a bit sore but nothing as you describe.

I hope you can get this under control to gave the stretching and strengthening you need and leave off the pain. I am jealous of your carrot cake. :)

Oh I was sorry and angry to read about your PT. What was she thinking!! She said herself that you were there ridiculously early. Then bearing in mind your history, that it was a particularly complicated surgery not a standard THR, she should have been ultra conservative. How dare she!

I too was told that I had to do the exercises or I would lose the window of opportunity. This was over 3 weeks post op mind you, and I hadn’t done the exercises for the preceding couple of weeks, having absorbed the Bonesmart philosophy, so if there really was a tiny window I’d already missed it. I was scared to think I might wind up frozen with a limp, so I did the exercises for a day. Then I read more ODI stories on here and stopped again. I had several more visits with the physio and I don’t think she could even tell I never did the exercises. All has pretty much healed anyway. The trouble is there are few proper controlled trials of physio vs no physio, so they never get feedback that they are talking rubbish. My physio would probably count me as a success for the exercise regimen: she gave me exercises, I don’t limp, ergo exercises are essential.

Which is not to say that the right physio isn’t very helpful. Mine has turned out to be, after an unpromising start. Maybe there is hope for your future appointments. I’ve just had a physio visit, which I will update on my thread, but I just wish you had someone as gentle as mine.

I understand the position you are in re having to placate the surgeon. But can you make it very clear to the pt how much pain she caused? It just can’t be right that you have to suffer this on top of everything else.

@Klassy My husband sees it my way 100% but all the kids are in the PT camp. My daughter-in-law said to me today that PT has to be painful to work! I used to really like that girl and she did just give a beautiful new grandson but seriously..... she has never had any surgery; she was in a Chartered Accountant final exam during her labour, pushed twice when my son got her to hospital, etc. Pffft!

My daughter (the nurse) is in PT camp but said I need to be clear how much pain lingered, has affected my progress today and therefore it defeated the purpose!

Honestly, it's worse than Republican and Democrat debates!
