TKR Graduated!

Glad to see the site is back from the DDOS! No fun! :banghead:

New Year's day I opened and closed Christmas Town at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg! A BIG milestone, I all but ruined the family trip last year with my knee pain. This time, the knee had no complaints, though it was a bit tiring overall, well over twice my previous post-op excursion on foot!:yes!:

My six month follow up is in a month. The LTKR has far exceeded all my expectations. I really was expecting some compromises, but the knee is reaching parity with the other one, and infact surpassing it. I need to discuss my right knee with him. At the moment, it gets a little painful after a long walk. And it hurts at night a little in the same area the other knee hurt to point I could not sleep. It does have OA, but obviously is behind the other one in progression.

I want to see if he can give me a good estimate of the remaining life in that joint. If not multiple years, I think I would be best to have it done sooner, rather than later. I feel odd even suggesting this as I was essentially dragged kicking and screaming to the first TKR. I am also concerned it may not turn out as well, though the OS seems very competent.

Good luck on your 6 month checkup JM. I bet you'll surprise them all.

When I got the left done the docs said the right looked as bad for OA but if it wasn't giving me problems we'd address later (I got 2 opinions). I'm hoping I can delay the inevitable because my caregivers are pretty tired - lol.

The best of luck to you on your six-month check up----you are doing great!

I have often read of too many folks saying, "Why did I wait so long?" Have your OS guesstimate, and go from there, but now that you are a seasoned veteran, you now how things go down.

Again, the bottom line is that it is up to you as to when you are going to have it done, but you now have some ideas as to when you might considering doing it.

I too still have one knee to go. Irony is, it was the original injury. Meniscus removed from the inside compartment 36 yrs. ago!! Then I had a "clean out" on the outside compartment about 10 years ago. Yes, it is bowing in and looks terrible on the x-ray, but other than a bit of stiffness, an occasional pain at the site of the removal, or a bit of aching now and then at night, it still does well. Well in all honesty it has started clicking regularly, but there is no pain with that, so.....! In the early years it was very unstable, but as a groove (bone on bone!) was worn in it, it has stabilized quite well. Go figure! The PA for my shoulder doctor has had a knee replacement and was he who urged me to get my first knee done; he can't believe I am still walking around on that damaged knee! Thing is now that the first knee replacement is working fairly well the old knee is doing better too, and as at this point I am getting around better than I have for several years, I guess we will see how long I can wait.

I checked with my doc to understand the degradation on the non-surgical knee in the xrays between Jan and Dec of last year. There was no real difference (I forget the exam statement). I'm with you Kssii, I'll try to wait it out unless I can be guranteed a Jmdearas result :-)

I'm about a week away from my 6 month checkup. The healing is pretty much done. The new knee looks about the same size as the old one. No more initial pain standing up after sit in a chair at work for hours. Other than an initial twinge when I cross my legs, there is no pain. The only sensations are at extremes and feel like stretching more than anything. Same places and same sensations as my other leg pushing at extremes.

I'm quite pleased! I never thought it would turn out this well.
:hiking::wow::yahoo::yes!:

6 month scar.

[Bonesmart.org] Graduated!

looks a lot like mine. I'll have to take a pic.

Well, I passed my 6 month 6000 mile checkup!:heehee: Extension is 1, was 3 degrees, flexion 135-140, I can cross my legs, kneel on hard floor, sit crosslegged on the floor. As to my other knee, he said, "well, not much left, use it as long as you can, but don't wait until your ROM is reduced to 40 degrees!"

Did you get an oil change too?:heehee: You are doing so well. Your incision has healed very nicely. As far as the other knee I hope it can last a good long time now that you have one good leg to stand on.

OK, I hesitate to ask this question here, given this group has a high concentration of problem knees, but here goes!

My TKR has surprised me with how well it has done. It now exceeds my other OA knee that still has cartilage, though it is thinning. I am weighting an "early" replacement since the right knee is not able to keep up with the TKR knee. For example, I kneeled on the ground without cushions other than the dirt beside the driveway last night to help my son scrub his floor mats, for maybe 15 minutes. Today, my right (OA) knee is sore, TKR is fine.

So I am wondering what the odds are a TKR on my right knee would turn out as well as the left? Same doctor, same component. I know there are no guarantees.

It's great to hear about knee replacements that go really well.

I think that your chances of the second knee going well are about the same as they were for the first knee to go well. Same surgeon, same type of knee replacement - all good. The only different factor is going to be the state your second knee is in - and that could impact your recovery. As we say so often, "no two knees are alike."

We can't predict, but I'd guess that your chances are pretty good.
