TKR Graduated!

Were you able to sleep on your side right after your surgery? I am not a back sleeper and will have a hard time trying to get to sleep that way. I've also sleep on either side and switch from one to the other all during the night. I think it would be great for the knee to sleep with it bent, but I bet turning over would be very painful. Of course, it's impossible to elevate while laying on my side. I bet your next knee will be just fine with extension. For 9 months out you are doing great!

Yes, I slept on my side the first night. And I switched sides, it was not that painful as I recall.
And thanks. I actually forget about the knee, or which one it is, sometimes now. I am dyslexic, and have trouble remembering right from left! I was in the shower this morning, and remembered my feet needed extra scrubbing after being barefoot in the yard. I did the first one, a little awkward while standing and then I started to do the other one, expecting some resistance to the extremes I was putting it to, when I realized I had done the TK leg
first, without event!

Wow! I can't wait to be in your shape! God has certainly blessed you tremendously. And if I can sleep on my side immediately, that's half my sleeping problem taken care of.

Sisters, I slept on my side in the hospital and when I got home. I got a couple extra pillows and put them behind me and held onto the rail at the hospital. It's been awhile, I'm coming up on a year, but I don't recall having much added pain or anyone complaining about my position. At home, I used a full body pillow behind and several pillows in front and between my knees. I think having the surgical knee on top was more painful than having it on the bottom but I had the protect it either way. June 2nd is rolling right around.

JM - have you thought any more about the timing for doing the other knee?

I plan on side-sleeping as soon as I can. I've never been much of a back sleeper. I will try your pillow suggestions. Thank you for the hints!

OK, this is very NOT GOOD! Yesterday all was fine, but just before I went to bed, my right knee started to twinge with pain. No sleep, and by morning it was a 6-7 on the pain scale. I forgot to use my handicap placard and park under the building, I thought I might not make it to the office from the parking deck. I have an appointment with my OS tomorrow at noon. Those of you that do, please pray something like a steriod shot will fix it for now, I have a beach vacation coming up, and the other knee ruined that one. :(

pain is down to a 4, now, and when I stand, it feels like the pain the TKR had a while back when standing after sitting a while.

Jim

Oh no, Jim. I will certainly pray for you. Did you twist knee or something like that, that could explain this sudden pain? You were doing so exceptional and now this. Kick that satan to the curb! And please let us know what you OS says. We'll be waiting to hear from you.

I don't recall, but I often do not notice things like that, I'll walk into the house after working on the car or something and my wife will notice blood running down my arm or whatever. :) So that's what I'm hoping. Thanks for the prayers. My grandson will be there this year and I am looking forward to some bonding time.

Jim, how are you feeling today? What did the doctor say? Watch out for that I95 traffic. It's crazy today!

Well, the knee is blown. :( Steroid shot has relieved the pain. Pre-op appt at the end of June, but replacement is tentatively scheduled for July 25. (2 months after steroid shot min)

The shot included lidocaine, instant pain gone!

Smart aleck Doctor, I asked if it was going to be the same knee, he said "no it's going to be the other one" and grinned. I shook my head and he then replied, "yes, it'll be the same type"

I'm sorry to hear that you need the other knee replaced.
We'll be here for you when July 25th arrives.

I knew it was coming, just expected more time and a more gradual failure, like the first one!

Do I stay in this forum or move to preop? I pretty much know the process up to surgery and beyond.

Boy, that was quick. You'll probably be shortly behind a lot of we June babies! I'm so sorry it has come to this, but you knew sooner or later it would. Do you have a date yet?

I have a balance to try to work out. They use some pretty strong pain medicine. You are dismissed with a prescription for oxycodon. It helps the pain, but I found I became dependent in a couple of days, and (sorry) it inhibits bowel movements, which starts to be a more serious issue than the pain. Plus it puts me in this hopeless malaise. I probably need to get a non-narcotic and deal with more pain.

It's what I get for planning to show off to you! :) Now I might have to hobble in with my cane!

Replacement is scheduled tentatively for July 25. It was a compromise date between my wife's return to school and the 2 months after a steroid shot (slows healing) that I got today so maybe I won't be so lame for my beach vacation with my grandson and family, like I was last year. I was so pleased with being totally ambulatory until this.

Since you're still officially recovering from your first TKR, you can stay here.
It's OK though, if you want to start a thread in the Knee Pre-op area as well, so you get to know a few of the people who will be having surgery in July, like you. You could post your surgery date in the July sparklers thread, so that bottomshollow adds you to the list there.

When you have your second knee done, it's up to you whether you want to continue with this thread (the thread title can be changed) or start a new thread for the second knee.

Boy I sure hope my natural knee doesn't go as fast as yours did JM. I am definitely struggling between the balance of waiting until the left is totally healed and needing to focus another 18 months on the recovery of the right OR doing the right sooner and just cutting some time off the full 3 year recovery cycle for both knees. Fact is, I'm scared. More about that in my own thread.

Good luck! July 25 will be here in a blink.

I guess I am blessed, my left knee is essentially completely healed. 0 extension literally days before my right knee gave in. no pain, and 145 extension. my right knee was likely a sudden tear in the meniscus, it cannot even make 0 extension anymore, and it used to hyperextend a few degrees.
