TKR Graduated!

Anyone hear of this? A friend just asked me: "Hi Jim - Before your knee surgery did they give you something to put in your nose to keep you from picking up any 'bugs' before it?"

Apparently causing diarrhea.

I had a swab for MRSA done from my nose done as part of my pre admission testing. Being a healthcare provider I tested positive ( I've read where the majority of nurses would probably be positive even though we showed no signs of it). I had to use an ointment in my nose a couple times a day for a week to clear it up. Maybe that is what your friend is referring to. I did not get diarrhea from it but I would guess if someone had gotten oral antibiotics that very likely could have caused the diarrhea.

I'm very jealous that you are getting down onto the floor. I'm totally afraid to even try it. My other knee isn't in great shape and my OS routinely tells patients not to kneel on the TKR for at last 6 months. I'm going to have to try it soon though because I live alone and am fairly clumsy!!

It's not a swab, it's some kind of daily med.
I could kneel with knee pads at 2 months or so, I can knee on thin carpet, now. You don't have to kneel to get on the floor, there's a video here somewhere. My OS said I could kneel whenever I felt like it. He was surprised I felt like it so soon!

The swab tested for bacteria and the ointment 'killed' it. I don't know of any med to use to just prevent any kind of infection prior to surgery. I have been told to take antibiotics now before dental procedures and some types of invasive medical procedures. Usually you're given IV antibiotics during surgery and a few doses after it's over.

I think I would look for a different PT. I have had a total of 5 different knee surgeries and have never had a therapist treat me that way. What does your doctor think of your progress?

I had a great home therapist that started as soon as I got home after my TKR. For extension she suggested that when I am kicking back watching TV put my foot (heel) on my coffee table (having enough space between my sofa and table to straighten the leg) and relax it. If it gets uncomfortable stop. I was able to go a little longer each time. It is not even an exercise:)

Have faith that you know what is best for you.

I'm sorry about that..It must of been. First day on this and still finding my way around. I hope the knee is doing well.

i reached another personal goal. Sitting cross-legged! :yay::yay::yay:
(ignore the ugly fat guy, just check out the legs!)

No real problem getting up, one arm and one leg to push up, either leg works. I've been sitting on the floor/ground a month or more, just had to keep the TKR leg straighter.

Thanks all! I do have more flexion than what you see in the photo, just not with my leg rotated that much!
:)

Wow!! That's great. I still haven't even ventured onto the floor. My old knee is damaged and I don't think I have enough flexion in the new one to be able to get myself up.

I was able to get down on the floor several times back in October and get back up without a forklift :heehee:

The concept was scarier than the reality, though I made sure to tell folks not to laugh as I got up. I have not tried sitting on the floor cross legged yet but I do pretty routinely now sit on chairs with my surgical leg crossed over the other. It feels kind of good (?).:umm:

Congrats! :spin: You're doing great and setting the bar for others of us! :wowspring:
We're babysitting a 2 yr old and a 5 yr old for 4 days starting Thurs, so I may be on the floor but not necessarily by choice!
