TKR Graduated!

I pray my outcome is as good as yours and I'm hoping to have the left one done before the end of the year. All my co-pays and my cap will be satisfied and will save me $$ if I don't have to start over in '17. Did you do it the BoneSmart way? Don't wait too long to have the bad one replaced! There's too much living left to do to be slowed down with it. Say a prayer for me on the 2nd.

I will pray. I slowly did the bonesmart way, I did not know of the site until PT pain had me searching. Even then, I was reluctant to not follow the PT's orders. I discussed stopping with my OS, and reluctantly he agreed on the condition I resume them if no progress in a few weeks. The rest is history. I have some serious discussions planned before the next knee. I know what to do and what to look for, and do not want any home care or PT.

That sounds perfect! I plan on doing it the slow and easy way, too. At my joint class this morning PT was saying how we would have to have 90/0 before we could go home, that they would make sure we would have those numbers. I thought to myself, "Ain't no way this girls letting you touch me!". They won't touch me and I'll go home if everything else is OK. My range and extension is my business, not theirs. They are worried about the money from insurance, not my knee! And thank you for your prayers! Have a blessed night's sleep!

The arrogance of modern medicine amazes me. You grew up when I did, and a Doctor worked for you, made house calls. I decide when I'm ready to leave. I had 120 the day after surgery. I did not get 0 until 8 months out. Everyone is different

That's what I did with my second knee- no home care and no home PT. I changed my own surgical dressing (it's easy!), did simple exercises on my own, and recovered just fine. At my 6 -it was closer to 7- month appointment I handed my OS a photo of me mountain biking. HA!

@Clipless, Go girl! I bought some huge bandages so I could change mine, also, but yesterday I found out I'll probably have the waterproof one and unless there's drainage I shouldn't have to change it for a while. I really think we know how to care for ourselves better than anyone else when it comes to a normal recovery and rehab.

@jmdearras, 120 the day you left! Wow! I bet it went down when PT started their torture. I remember well the days of doctors visiting us at home and even drugstores delivering prescriptions. The doctors were in control of how long you were hospitalized, what kind and how many pills you could have...ect., then all of a sudden the insurance companies took over and now they say what kind of care we can get. Something is wrong is with this picture! After my first patellectomy in '91. I was running a fever in the hospital and my OS didn't want me to be discharged. The insurance company pitched a fit and the doctor and hospital had to really fight for me to stay one more night. That would have never been a problem just a few years before that. I always run a fever after surgery, but I'm still discharged with the hope it'll come back down! Of course, I'd much rather be home anyway! There are a lot fewer germs here.

I was 120/20 at discharge! :oyvey:The PT made no long term changes, worse right after a session, but recovered after a day or so. At 9 months, I am now 140+/0, FINALLY hit 0! I think my problem was that laying on my back in the hospital, my legs naturally lay out, the toes pointing apart, and the knees bent. (think frog on it's back!) I want a brace next time for the first few days to hold my leg straight. straight. I remember it was straight immediately after surgery ( I was awake for most of it)

Keeping your knee very straight after the surgery isn't really necessary and it's very uncomfortable.

That what PT said they're going to do to me after mine. She said if she catches a pillow under my knee she's going to take it and put it under my ankles. Get me out of that place asap!
I was awake for most of it
@jmdearras do you mean you were awake for most of the surgery or most of the time afterwards in the hospital?

For the surgery. They somehow missed my sleep apnea, and I started having breathing issues laying on my back. They said they could have intubated me which would have interrupted the surgery momentarily or just wake me. I'm glad they woke me! I had so much happy juice, I was just amused at the workshop sounds (hammering, sawing, drilling, etc.) Got out of the recovery room faster, too.

I agree it's uncomfortable, but why then did I lose so much extension in the days after surgery? I'm all for not bracing it if it won't help. I sleep in near fetal position, legs bent far, probably why I left the hospital with 120 degrees of flexion!

That sounds terrifying! Just the thought of it gives me the heebee jeebees! But, I am so glad that I won't have the GA this time. That stuff makes me sick for days. I want to lose more weight, but certainly not that way.

They did not use GA, just a spinal and a nerve block in the leg. I was given happy and sleepy drugs via the IV, they just stopped the sleepy, and maybe increased the happy! It sounded like it would be terrifying, but I was happy and just amused! I was given a GA for a kidney stone sonic fracture procedure, and yes, I felt awful for days, not counting the kidney stone, which hurt worse than the post-op knee!

I usually sleep that way, too, but I did try to sleep on my back most of the time after my surgeries. Maybe the loss of extension was due to swelling?

They don't like a single pillow under your knee for a couple of reasons - it can restrict circulation and it can keep your knee bent a bit too much. But a pillow just under your ankle is going to extend your knee uncomfortably. You don't want that either. Just go with what they want in hospital (unless it's hurting you) and you can do what you like once you get home.

This is the way that BoneSmart recommends you use pillows to elevate your leg:

I cannot sleep on my back at all! Swelling was possible, after I quit PT, it came down to 5, which was fine for walking, etc. then over six months back to 0.

That's what they insisted on for me post op. Knee suspended over air. Problem was, I had to concentrate to hold my feet vertical, they flopped out otherwise, and my knee bent.

I don't think that lying on our side had the same effect as immobilizing your knee with a pillow under it would have done. At least you were able to move your leg and alter the degree of bend - and you probably did move a bit while you were sleeping - but lying on your back with a pillow under your knee tends to stop your leg from moving.

We won't know why your leg was slow to regain extension, but I don't think that any of it was your fault
