TKR Graduated!

You really see how bad your "good" knee is when the new knee becomes the good one. :)

I just wanted to say I really enjoy reading when someone has a good outcome. If more people with good outcomes would post, perhaps it would not be as frightening for people in the pre-op section. Good luck with the second knee! I am sure you will do well.

I had my right tka in May 2014 and my left tka in November 2015. Same surgeon, hospital, physical therapist for both knees. I had excellent outcomes with both knees. Both ROM are at 0-140. The only difference in the knees is that the left knee implant was a custom made prosthesis based on a CT scan of my leg. My surgeon actually likes these better. I think I had an easier recovery the second time around I think in part because I knew what to expect. It just was a better experience the second time. I had tough days but I knew it wouldn't last. I too was told to hold off on the 2nd replacement as long as a could but my knee just deteriatred fast. I have no regrets with not putting it off.

Well, today I measured, and I have passed 140 degrees of flexion! :happydance: Due to my weight, that is approaching the maximum possible. My other knee only reaches around 145. I think I have reached 0 extension, too. Still working on that to get a bit of hyperextension like my other knee.

The public perception of knee replacement seems to be pretty poor. This past Sunday, I was sitting in the AV Loft in the church, up a set of tall, steep stairs. A Deacon came up, and saw me at the computer. He asked if I was the one with the replacement knee, and how then did I manage those stairs! I got the knee replacement so I could manage those stairs easily! 2 weeks post-op I was up there, though it was single step at that time. I can take them 2 steps at a time, now!

It's good to hear that your knee is doing so well. :yes!::happydance:

Unfortunately, there are some people around in the general population (but not here on BoneSmart!) who seem to enjoy telling everyone something like "Oh, how I've suffered!", while the people with a successful recovery keep quiet and just get on with their new lives.
We need to hear all the stories we can about successful outcomes, so thank you for posting yours.

So glad to hear how well you are doing. High five!

Within 1 inch of heel to butt! I am obsessed with getting it there since the OS said I would likely not be able to. He said there would be no harm if I managed it, so I'm GONNA do it! :chuckmarch:

Oh, and my comments about this being the worse pain I had ever experienced in the first weeks. Well I just had a kidney stone a few weeks ago. :censored: Far worse than the knee, FAR WORSE! :tantrum:

Ouch! :console2:
I've had kidney stones too, so I know how you felt. Kidney stones are a miserable thing to have.

A little bragging! My 24 year old son complained he could not cut the grass in front of the house that the county is starting to complain about since it is still wet from the endless rain we have had. Well, 64 year old dad with the fake knee managed to cut it with the electric pushmower, and 51 years of experience! Walked 2 3/4 miles totally in one shot. a new record, I think, post-op. Only the other knee complained at all. :egypdance::egypdance::egypdance:

You are doing amazingly! You really give me encouragement. I was just up in Richmond this morning going to my joint class and preop testing for St. Marys. The weather was horrible. I'm a country driving girl that was close to flipping out driving on 95 during rush hour in the pouring rain! But, praise God, I made it! But, my PB was way up!

I live in the country (barely anymore!) and I do rush hour every day on i64/i95. Rain makes it worse. What ortho group are you using? When is surgery scheduled? just remember, do NOT let the PT hurt you, that will just slow down healing.

Tuckahoe Othro is my group. Dr. Hull is my doctor. He has done replacements on knees without kneecaps, which was on my search criteria. I live SE of Petersburg where it's nice and quiet. Coming from the Tidewater area about 20 years ago, I never want to live in the city again! If all my tests come back OK, my surgery is scheduled for
June 2. Unfortunately, this means a drive back into the madhouse up there! I really dread my ride back home afterwards. I hope I'll have enough pain meds in me!

I have Virginia Ortho, with the best OS in the state! :ok: I've heard good things about Tuckahoe Ortho, I hope you got #2 :) I live in eastern Goochland and work downtown. Maybe I could visit you in the Hospital and show you a 9 month knee!

Oh, you poor thing having to fight that traffic everyday. You and I come from the opposite sides of the area. And you are right, Goochland is really growing up. At least down here it's still pretty country. We don't even have a stoplight in our town!
I had an appointment with Virginia Ortho, but the doctor cancelled on me 25 minutes before my appointment, which ticked me off. My appointment with Dr. Hull was the next day and I feel he was a God-send for me. I believe in the power of prayer and I had prayed hard for guidance. Dr. Hull is the one I trust I was sent to. Come see me at St Marys on the 3rd! Maybe you could help me walk and show me that, that new knee of yours actually works like it's supposed to!

I'm sorry to hear that. Usually, it is some sort of surgical emergency. God may well have been guiding you to the best for your knee though. I have Harry Shaia, Jr. and recommend him highly!

I will try to come by on the 3rd! it's my good knee, now! Probably another year or so on the other one, I'm not going to wait as long.
