@aprilc You were walking with your daughter. Might you have upped your speed to keep up with your daughter?
It happened to me when I ran into a friend in the neighborhood, and we then were walking together for a 3/4 mile or so. I regretted that I was trying to keep up to her pace only later when I felt like I had done too much.....

It is wham! For sure! I feel like I'm not keeping up and I want to progress but I think you're right. My knee is much better but seems to get worse when I walk, which is a bummer cuz that's what I'm supposed to do! Slow and steady.... Wins the race

@MajorHeidi ..you have a point, I did hand to tell her to slow down. Out was just a little too fast but that probably makes a big difference..and I probably slow down towards the end of a walk where she stays consistent

Started back to school this week, students start back next week. I'm exhausted each and every day and the work hasn't even really started yet! I thought the energy drain would be almost gone by now.

So it's 8:00pm, good night to all!

Sleep well. No matter the time.

@aprilc
I also have the energy drain. I went back to work part time and I'm thoroughly exhausted. When I get home I still ice and elevate, and nap! On Monday I hit my 6 week mark. I still need my crutches. I am working really hard and strengthening the flexor muscles. My situation is different than most, but I rest as much as I can. I think that is the key! I hope you are able to build up some energy. Rest rest rest.

@ fearbox, so sorry the energy drain plagues you by days end. We read and read about how long it takes to get out strength and stamina back but until you test those limits, it really doesn't sink in. Glad you know to stop and rest.

One suggestion--be sure you're eating healthy foods and getting all the vitamins you need. That should help boost your body's ability to gradually increase your activity level. Try to keep some almonds or trail mix handy as a snack during your busy day as it will help give you a lift!

Just trying to think of little things to take the edge off until the shoes come off and the legs elevate and ice!! Be encouraged. Every day you are making progress, even if it's small steps.

Just when I was starting to feel stronger I go back to work and take a huge step backwards. I did talk to my supervisor and told him that i'm going to be playing it by ear because going back to work full time is exhausting me and I'm not going to make it. So today was the first day back with students. Got there on time but around 2pm really started to feel the drain so I told everyone toodles and now I'm laying on my couch icing. Didn't think I would need a phased back to work schedule but you don't realize how many breaks you take throughout the day until you don't take them! And it's not only the drain there's more pain, don't know why..less icing time?

However I have to agree with something @waterman1 said in the beginning of my recovery. The better /stronger you start to feel the more dangerous you become to yourself. Went to a small music festival in my small town on Sat. did some dancing - I guess you would call it dancing, barely dancing, some shaking of the hips etc, nothing crazy but I ended up sliipping on a wet floor and FELL! My pride was hurt the most but I tore up the knee on my other side and now I'm worried about getting an infection and my hip hurts a little more but it started hurting more last week when I got back to work so it's hard to tell if it's because of work or the fall. I'm starting to agree with my sister when she says I should strap myself down to a wheelchair. I'm really a danger to myself!!

@aprilc Oh no, on the fall! You are right that as we improve we become more dangerous to ourselves.
Did you break the flesh on the knee?
On school, can you take icepaks with you there and use them?

Yes, broke the flesh big time, I was bleeding pretty bad. I'm worried because there was like a flap of skin dislodged on my knee and I just put it back in place without cleaning it really well (that night) and since then, even in the shower the flap is staying put so I think it's mending back together but I'm all paranoid that there are germs in there I didn't get out. Normally I wouldn't worry about this type of thing but with the fear of infection in the hip I'm officially worried. What do you think? Should I just wait and see? Get prophylactic antibiotics? Get it cleaned properly by someone (other than me) who's going to dislodge the flap? Is it that easy to get an infection?

At work I can go to the nurses office and lay down with some ice. The energy zapped me today before the pain did but I definitely have that on my list of survival techniques if needed.

@aprilc My biggest fear is another fall but I totally get how it is so hard to hold back on everything in life. You might be smart to get the knee looked at with the possibility of them cleaning it out or antibiotic. I think the very least I would doing is pouring iodine or something on it and covering it but also monitor it very closely for any redness at all. I do hope work gets a bit easier for you over the week but make sure your recovery is your 1st priority as it could save you less time off in the long run. Now sit down & buckle up!!! :)

@aprilc I too am a serial medical Googler.
I think @Carriemay60 has good advice above. Might the school RN look at it, and clean it up a bit? Don't over worry though, ok? I think redness is key.......
Glad you can lay down and use icepacks at school. That should help.

@aprilc, I'm sorta freaked out at your fall! Yikes!! Get it cleaned out ASAP and watch it like a hawk!! You've come too far!!

Ice and rest at school when you can. Inching forward. No backtracking!!

Thanks ya'll.
@Carriemay60 So So So hard to hold back, I'm used to blasting through life full speed, yes I've been hurt and things have slowed me down (like when my hip had arthritis) but even then I just went for it and dealt with the pain later. Now I'm afraid my inability to take it easy (well, I actually think I am taking it easy!) is going to lead to some sort of disaster. This is tough!

@MajorHeidi LOL Serial Medical Googler - me too! I always say I'm one website away from my MD! Very helpful but you can freak yourself out but I've also figured a lot of stuff out. I did have the nurse look at it and she didn't seem to excited about opening up that flap and really cleaning it out. She didn't offer. She did give me some bigger bandaids, told me to stop using Neosporin, they've actually been told as nurses not to use it anymore. It's a polysporin world these days. I guess the Neosporin takes away the bacteria that kills the bad bacteria? something like that. Polysporin is basically bacitracin ointment.

@beachgal Yeah I feel like I need to get it a good cleaning too. I told hubby I may go to the doctor to get it done properly and he was like "another dr? You can clean it out yourself for free!" I just don't think I can't lift that flap it's going to hurt really really bad and bleed bad. I'm going to clean it some more with that presurgical soap and hope it gets in there good enough and watch it like a hawk and go back and forth between letting in breath and smothering it in Polysporin. I will call my doc today just to make them aware and see what they say.

Two steps forward one step back...someone else on these boards was just saying this. On a good note, my decision to leave school the minute I felt the energy drain was the right thing to do, waking up with no pain in my hip this morning!

@aprilc if you are concerned about the cut I would get your GP to clean and dress it for you. Unless you have heat, redness and inflammation around the area you are most likely ok. But it is good for peace of mind to get it checked and treated properly.

Update - wound did not get infected, healing nicely.

I have a new question though. I'm having pain in my groin area that seems to be getting worse. My PT did a lot of soft tissue massaging the other day, it's really the only thing left bothering me but it hurts bad and seems to be getting worse the more I do. I have been told to take a break from PT to see if things calm down. I was doing those basic glute activation exercises they give you in the hospital, when your legs are straight, and that hurts - sharp pain while doing and then starts aching. My hip is starting to hurt while I try to sleep which hasn't been the case for a while. My PT is still trying to figure it out and, of course, I'm googling like a fiend. I'm not doing anything crazy PT wise. It seems to have started when I did some mini squats - I think I did too many but it felt OK at the time (2x30) and that started it hurting then I got the soft tissue work in the TFL/Illiopsoas area and that seemed to kick it into overtime. I also have been sitting in bleachers a lot watching my daughter play volleyball but I do stretch my leg out and lean back against the wall so I'm not at a 90 degree angle too long. I had anterior lateral so no restrictions.

So here's my question..

Anyone ever had illiopsoas tendonitis or bursitis post surgery? What were your symptoms?

Hey there @aprilc !
Yeah, I had a time or two where I would get groin pain in the area of the illiopsoas after doing
something. It would go away the next day or maybe two... Just a feeling in that groin area that I had
done too much and it was aggravated like a strain. I would then usually shield it with a limp and then it
would ease and go away.
The pool here stayed open til Tuesday of this week and is now closed. Boo!

I still have a bit of groin pain but I think mine is due to not moving enough in the direction of stretching out those groin muscles since my surgery. I had a lot of pain there pre-op and while it's not constant, when I move in a way that would cause those groin muscles to stretch, they are unhappy. It's on my "workout" list...may be a while before they settle down, though.

Still having that pain along with some nice piriformis pain. Josephine has suggested I stop PT altogether and I just cancelled my appt for tomorrow. I'm a little freaked out not doing therapy, she said all my exercises weren't very good and probably causing many of my problems (Bridges/side leg lift/planks etc). Walked 3.5 miles in the city while on a trip in SF (I was in the mission, not hilly!) and that just about killed me. Can I just vent and say I'm so frustrated that I'm not progressing as well as others!! It seems like I feel good and go on a nice walk and bam I'm in pain for days and having trouble sleeping. I'm trying to ween myself off the narcotics but just when I taper I hurt myself again and need to ramp up the pills to make it through the day and sleep. I'm just to walk a mile or so a day, cycle about 15 min or so (did 20 the other day and it hurt a little bit but I also stood up on the bike which I guess was dumb? I don't know felt fine while I was doing it), haven't swam recently because I got ringworm from my daughter so as soon as that's gone I'll try the pool again. But I'll probably overdo that without even knowing I've overdone it and be miserable.

Why am I so different? I was in relatively good shape before the surgery although my activity level had gone way down. I'm 3 months post op, just read that someone walked 4 miles when they were at 10 weeks, I've walked about a mile 1/2 which has felt good but I also just walked around my school to get out of my chair and ended up hurting very quickly. I don't get why I'm not progressing faster and why I'm having all this soft tissue pain. I'm pretty sure I'm my own worst enemy but, come on, I'm 3 months post op - I'm not trying to do crossfit i'm just trying to walk around a city I'm visiting or my school or do some PT to strengthen my weakened muscles. What do you guys think? I need some words of encouragement here...I've stopped reading people's recovery stories because frankly, as soon as I see they are progressing faster than me I get mad and I want to go out and just say screw it and do what they're doing. I know everyone heals differently but I wasn't in a wheelchair before surgery, I didn't have anything crazy other than your standard arthritis from Femoral Acetabular Impingement. Why is this taking so long!!! UGH!!!! Thanks for letting me vent!
