Just awesome @aprilc !
So good to hear your PT is really helping your strength, and it truly does.
And, the pool. Woohoo on that!
The walking in it is good; what is the pulling?
You sound very happy in your words. :happydance:

I am!

Hi April- I also had the FAI scope done. I had lots of injections first thinking it was bursitis. So I have an MRI with contrast done. NO FUN. I then go to my OS and he says I need the FAI ARTHROSCOPY surgery. So of course go thru with it. Now go 4 months down the road. I'm getting worse not better. My OS Tells me I'm not working hard enough! Which is RIDICULOUS! My PT's can verify how hard I've been working. Something is definitely wrong. For instance the ball keeps pooping out of the socket. So needless to say I got a second opinion. This OS said I should have never had the first surgery, I need a total hip replacement. So I go to a third OS and end up getting a THR.

I'm a little over 2 weeks out. I have good and bad days. I have been told to not overdo it. I have learned that is best. Overdoing it sets ya back a few days.

It's been a ride. I've been on crutches for 6 months. I'm ready too be crutchless. I wish you the best if luck. This is a great place with great information.

Hey @fearbox !
Read my pre op story, the link is in my signature. I had everything as well, including 2 scopes. Even had 2 doctors tell me I didn't have arthritis after the 2 scopes and was still having trouble. For some reason Dr Stubbs, one of the fai specialists in the us, saw arthritis and told me I needed thr. He doesn't do them so I figured the os surgeon would be my second opinion. He took one look at my mri and said "so when do you want to do this?" I asked him if he was going to talk me out of it and he said nope I needed a new hip. I was a bit mad bc I was led to believe that I had the scopes done to keep me from getting arthritis but that's really not how it works. There's no evidence that scopes due to fai will prevent arthritis.

I'm glad I did it. A month out and I'm walking with no crutch or cane (unless I know it's going to be a long walk). I see a lot of people on fai forums trying to"deal" rather than getting new hips. I now tell them (as long as they're not really really young) to just go for it. Get your life back!

Best of luck in your rehab!

I'm at the beach ahhhhhh the sweet sweet ocean!

Officially 5 wks post op. Some things I've noticed especially since I'm out of my comfort zone and at a beach house with many stairs and at a beach with ya know soft sand and the strong ocean....

Getting out of your comfort zone, ie house, has it's good points and it's bad. For one, I've challenged myself more, going up and down many stairs, long walk on a board walk through the dunes to get to the beach, and keeping up with my very active friends! So I have to keep up with my PT, it seems like the muscles don't work right unless I've woken them up daily. So sometimes I hurt and i don't want to do PT but then I realize I actually hurt less afterwards. Stairs just suck, unless I put a lot of weight on the railing I'm still going up one leg at a time. I did start this week off using my cane but have slowly ditched it completely. This rehab is so fast that I find it hard sometimes to figure out where my boundaries are, it's a moving target. I've been walking a lot so decided to take a leisurely stroll to the pier and back - probably was a mile and yes it was stupid. The walk there was awesome, I was feeling great and then about 1/2 way back my muscles had just had it, I hurt and it sucked. Stopping didn't really help bc I needed to lie down so I put my head down and just focused on getting....back...to...my...blanket. So that was too much, and I find when I do too much my lower leg swells, I guess maybe too much time on my feet? So iced when I got back to the house but a good remedy was lots of laying on the beach :) Went in the water and that was a bit dicey. Tide was high so I had to walk forever just to get up to my thighs, can't step over the water because my hip flexors are just not there yet and it was hard work to walk through the water, especially as waves were coming in. So I just sat into an approaching wave to get fully wet and got the heck out. Sitting though put me a little past my ROM so that hurt a little , nothing major - didn't think of that!

Our house is facing the marsh which makes for some beautiful sunsets here at sunset beach as well as some awesome kayaking through the marsh. It's the little things though that you don't think of at first.,like sitting in that wave. Totally thought I'd be able to kayak as long as we weren't out for too long - a short jaunt if you will. Well yeah that's not hard but didn't think about actually getting into and out of the kayak while it's in the water and on a ladder transferring to kayak. So watched my friends do it...it was hard for them and that's when I realized, no kayaking for you! It was a bummer to watch them take off on a lovely paddle but oh well. I'm happy I'm at the beach, I'm happy to see the sunset, I'm happy to walk around without a cane and happy to ride that beach cruiser - YES I did it and definitely good rehab, using more muscles than my spin bike at home. Time to change my short term goal again! :ice:

Sorry if I'm not supposed to start a new thread but I wanted to make sure people saw this. Had my THR 7/1/14, been doing fine, off of cane, rehab is going great. All of a sudden I woke up this morning with my knee hurting (on operative side). I thought maybe I had just slept on it wrong and got up to start my day. Problem is that the pain has not gone away, I'm back to taking a lot of pain meds, have swelling around knee so I'm back on couch, leg elevated and using ice. Pain is somewhat generalized but knee feels twingy when I walk, like I can feel pain in tendons or something. Swelling and pain is behind knee as well as on right side, not on top. I'm limping horribly, can't straighten leg and hurts to bend but I can do it.

I know it's hard to "diagnose" over a forum but anyone have any clue what is going on? I did nothing yesterday to hurt it, this was very sudden, woke up out of the blue this way. Anyone had something like this? I'm debating if I should call the doctor or go to urgent care - I guess I'll wait and see if it lasts until Monday?

Moderators, feel free to move this, I know you hate this, there is just no way to get attention for a new problem or issue and once you've started your recovery thread the same few people who have posted on it seem to be the only ones who follow.

@Josephine

This seems very strange to me, especially since there was no trauma to cause it. A crooked sleep position could maybe be the culprit but the symptoms seem extreme if that were the case. Glad you're icing and elevating. Hopefully a moderator will see this soon. So sorry!!

@aprilc, You may notice that I have merged your two threads. We like to keep our members' recovery posts all in a single thread. That way it's easy for us to go back and read your history before responding to a question or concern. In addition, the thread becomes a journal of your recovery for those who come along later and want to read about you. So, please post in this thread from now on when you want to give an update or ask a question. If you have questions or concerns that you want to be sure are addressed in a very timely manner, just tag an admin, a mod, another member or as many others as you feel necessary.

If you decide you'd like a different thread title at any point, you can change it using the Thread Tools button at the top right of the page or just post what you want here and we'll get it changed for you. THANKS!

Hi April, I am new here but saw this concern about knee pain and have to chime in. Any sudden pain like that, especially behind/around the knee should be checked immediately (like not tomorrow, but today at emergency) as it could very well be a blood clot. If it's not, no one will think you foolish for erring on the side of caution. You must go somewhere that has an ultrasound available.

From 3 experiences, blood clots can present differently in different people. My last one when I broke my leg felt like a charley horse behind my knee towards my calf muscle and I thought it was indeed a charley horse from tension so I ignored it for about 12 hours. Blood clots are not to be fooled with at all. The area may or may not be swollen, hot, red but nothing is written in stone so the only safe to do is go to emergency. Quick treatment is important to prevent it from going to your lung or heart.

@Carriemay60 I was wondering about that but since it seems to be in the joint I thought it was not DVT - blood clot. Wouldn't the pain and swelling be in my thigh or calf if it was? Was your pain ever in the joint?

From what I have been told when given guidelines to seek further medical attention, nothing is really typical or textbook with a DVT. Bottom line is that it only takes a few minutes to do a non-invasive ultrasound that potentially could save your life. I don't like to scare you, but I really think you should take such sudden onset pain seriously when you have no explanation for it.

@Carriemay60 I'm on hold waiting for the on-call doc. Thanks, a blood clot has been in the back of my mind all day I just really really really don't want to go to the ER but I may have to. Lets see what the doc says.

I am glad you are calling! I know the ER is the last place any of us want. We spent 8 hours there on Thursday to get a referral when we got home (I fell and had surgery while away from home)

@aprilc, that you are experiencing unusual pain, but very pleased that you are taking it seriously and doing as Carrie suggested. Sending prayers your way. Your fellow BoneSmarties will be standing on the sidelines rooting for you all the way.

Please take care and keep us updated. We care.

Well 7 hrs and $233 later, they have no idea what it is. Not dvt as best they can tell by ultrasound. So I'm just going home at 4am. I guess the only good thing to come I'id this visit is the pain is a bit better controlled thanks to the morphine so now hopefully I'll sleep!

:sleeep:April, I'm sorry you had such a long night but certainly happy to hear it is not a DVT! I do think it is worth getting checked with DVT's being so deadly undiagnosed. I hope you are able to sleep in long and peacefully!

@aprilc, better safe than sorry. With you and @muckingabout both at ER last night with possible DVT, its a reminder to all of us to be careful and watchful as we move through recovery. Best possible outcomes for both of you. A blessed and restful Sunday.

Hi @aprilc you did the right thing to go in and check on that.
Are you feeling better today? Did they give you any other plausible theories?

On another note, so good to hear of your Sunset beach trip. Sounded great!

@MajorHeidi no plausible theories. They basically just ruled out the DVT and sent me on my way, which was fine with me bc I was tired and knowing I didn't have DVT I just wanted to go to sleep!

But it is not better, the same. It's so weird, feels actually much more swollen on the inside than it looks on the outside. I can't bend my knee without really pushing it and it's extremely painful. I'm back to using the forearm crutch bc I can't walk anymore and I'm back to a ton of meds again - 2 oxycodone every 3-4 hours is just keeping the pain at bay, ice couch and elevation. I really don't know what to do. Something is not right. If I had slept on it wrong it would be sore but this is worse than that. I went from walking with no assistance, feeling great to waking up like this. There was nothing that happened to lead to this, no fall, I didn't overdo it. I''m really perplexed and really frustrated, I feel like I just took a trip back in time to week 2.

If anyone has any ideas I would LOVE to hear your theories. Luckily I have a PT appt Monday so I'll be checking with her and then go from there. I'm trying not to get too down in the dumps but can I just say that this really really really sucks!!! :boohoo:
