I'm perusing the internet. So far the only thing I'm seeing that's close is pseudo gout? Anyone ever had that? @Josephine do you have any ideas? I'm MISERABLE!

April, I'm so sorry I missed your problem. You should have tagged me earlier.

Let's start at the beginning:
Can you tell me the exact site of your pain using this chart?
Please note the instructions in the smaller image

Sorry, I always feel like you're being tagged by the world so I try to not bother you too much!

OK pain is pretty generalized but mostly DLB4 DLB3 - behind the knee. It doesn't hurt so much to palpate, it's a deeper all over knee pain that can radiate down into my calf rather generally, last night it was radiating all the way down my to my ankle. It's very hard to pinpoint.

There is some swelling around the knee that you can see but it seems worse, again, deep inside. I really can't bend my knee, nor can I straighten it completely.

@aprilc, I'm just concerned that all your beach activity at post #125 may have caused some of this. I didn't see this post until your threads were merged.

I know it may not seem like there was different movements but I would think that even walking in the sand could have triggered unused muscles around your knees? I'm so worried. Please keep posting your progress. Hugs!

Hmmm, but wouldn't it have started hurting soon thereafter? It really hit like a ton of bricks upon waking up from a good night's sleep. I would think if I had overused something or pulled something it would have started nagging at me right away.

@Josephine really trying to think about my pain - maybe it's under the knee cap and I'm thinking it's behind the knee? I've never had knee issues before so I know nothing of knee anatomy!

For you to say this really sucks, I'm sure, must be an understatement! I feel very bad for you going through this when it seems you were well on the road to full recovery. Hopefully, whatever set back this is, is quickly resolved passes soon. Thoughts are with you

So your pain is here?

That looks like the hamstrings to me. The two large muscles (red and green) the run down the back of your thigh and fix into the top of the tibia. These get affected by activities that are intense, like walking in sand! And yes, they can often take a day or so to show up.

Alternatively, it could be a Baker's cysts and other knee bursae which would also be aggravated by such activity.

I'm hoping your fun beach time is not the culprit. We have a week planned in October near Destin FL and my fondest dream would be some nice walks and such. I'm watching for Josephine's thoughts, too. Prayers for your struggle tonight.

@Josephine Yes it hurts back there but also feels like it's deep inside my knee as well. That area in the knee where the synovial fluid is, feels like that is where it hurts as well and where all the swelling is, more there than the back of the knee (the swelling that is). I don't think it's a baker cyst because I would feel it through the skin right? But if it had an abundance of synovial fluid would that cause pain and stiffness? I guess an increase in synovial fluid is inflammation in layman terms? So I aggravated my muscles, possibly tweaked my knee a bit without even knowing it and now it's inflamed? So at the end of the day are we talking RICE?

It has to be some sort of injury even though it seemed to pop up out of nowhere., and I don't feel like I did anything that intense, I really tried to be careful! So what do I do now? Is this just one of those things that will get better with time? The synovial fluid will decrease on it's own (ie the inflammation will go down)? Should I make an appt with my surgeon now or if it doesn't get better by day X get in to see him?

Thanks for all the support, advice and knowledge ya'll! It's hard to talk about this with "normal" folks, they just don't get it and frankly I think my family is tired of me being hurt and in pain! When I started talking about my knee yesterday morning my husband and both my daughters were doing a lot of eye rolling.

It's YOUR knee. I get the eye rolling junk but it's up to you to do everything possible to get rid of that swelling. Ice, yes. Elevate, yes. I do this on just a routine day. Please don't be upset...keep a clear head and be the lounge lizard for the rest of your beach trip.

Thanks @beachgal Yup, I'm still icing my hip, now it's my knee! Thankfully I'm back from the beach, left friday morning so I'm the lounge lizard at home now!

You're entitled!! Hopefully some of this will resolve itself with time and rest. Sure do hope so!!

@Josephine you're one smart cookie! Went to my pt today. Turns out it is my hams, something about them not working right and my joint used to not having the proper "seating"? I kind of didn't get it but she did some stretching of the hams while gently pulling my joint up and out. Felt good, I think she's trying to teach it to move the right way? She used some great words to explain it all but I can't remember one of them. Good news is I left able to straighten my knee and walk without a cane again. It's still feels swollen and a bit wonky when I walk but we're definitely on the right track. I see her again on Thursday.

Your Monday miracle!! So happy you have an answer that is easy to digest!!

:flwrysmile:So glad you got to the bottom of this without anything invasive or too uncomfortable! Hopefully it will continue to ease out and get you back where you were.

My PT identified a hamstring issue in the operated leg, though right under the butt cheek hen traveling down a few inches. She massaged it completely out and I was thrilled. What an impact those hamstrings have!!

@LoyalD Apparently the 2 ham muscles cross over in front of or is it behind your knee. I still have a ton of swelling in the knee and I was reading something last night about knee swelling and that it can be caused by muscle atrophy - I guess things just not working the way they're supposed to. I definitely have muscle atrophy, the trick now is to stretch the hamstring while making sure the joint is seated properly and improve my muscle tone in hams and quads but that's really hard when you can't bend your knee very far!

So when you hipsters go for a walk is it sore afterwards? I can't figure out if I'm walking too far or if it's just sore from muscle use and therefore a good thing. For example I went for a walk with my daughter last night and I know when I hit my wall but I still had to get home and so I finished the walk. It was less than a mile I'm pretty sure. Came home had to ice and it hurt that evening and was a bit achy the next day. It doesn't feel like muscle pain like after a workout it's hip achiness/pain. I can't figure out if I should take it a notch down or if this is part of what rehab feels like.

@aprilc , From all of Josephine's posts I have been perusing over the last week, I think you need to take it down a notch. If you walk a bit less than 1/2 the distance you did last night and home again, maybe you can get there before hitting the wall. "Hitting the wall" is such an appropriate term in this whole hip thing, in several areas I can be feeling pretty good and so suddenly just wham! How is the swelling & pain in the back of your knee doing?
