@Josephine after my short dumb swim the other day I'm still having significant burning in my groin. I stopped taking the Naproxen but acetomenophen doesn't really seem to be doing anything either. Since this is a recent flare up should I go ahead and do the Naproxen again? Do I need a cortisone shot in my psoas ya think, although on second thought, typically the bad bad burning pain resolves (well within tolerable limits) within a week so I may not need a shot. So naproxen 500 mgs 2x/day or no?

Why did you stop the Naproxen? Were you told to stop. I take 500mg 2X/day and Tylenol per the guidelines. I never used any heavy duty pain meds in hospital - just that prescription.

I would see if your psoas settles with rest and pain meds. Then start slowly building up your activity. Give your body a chance to heal!

Josephine had suggested just trying Tylenol but I also read something on here about Tylenol being more effective or less harmful than NSAIDS but now now I can't find it.

@aprilc , Hi, I see that you are learning a nice lesson about pain. It does not matter what you think. It does not matter if you cry. It just does not care. OK, now we know what makes it rear it's ugly head. overwork, striding out, 250 yards swimming, kicking off the wall. Let your BODY heal. Waterman is correct slow down and smell the roses. Now live your life healing and enjoy the ride. I deal with rehab every day and i say these things every other hour. Your body is Magical if you let it. Tomorrow is 17 weeks for your recovery. 17 for me is Weds. You will be OK.

@waterman1 , Nice to see you again, my Man. You are entwined with us Hippys, glad you are doing fine. I am doing great with my healing. I wondered where you went.

@Michegon so true, pain is my master!

But on a positive note and just to update everyone. I went back to PT after taking a couple of weeks off and we started back at the beginning. Learned that my joint is not "seating properly". My tight hip flexors and bad movement patterns (from years of a bad hip) actually pull the ball out of the socket just a bit when i lift my leg so all the PT I was doing, I was doing with the wrong positioning and it was pinching muscles, tendons whatever and causing groin pain and flare ups when I would do too much. I've been learning how to lift a bent leg while laying on my back while making sure that my ball and socket are seated properly and therefore not pinching. It's actually pretty amazing how weak the muscles that are supposed to keep it in place are, and how much of a workout this is for my brain! So after a week of lifting each foot (one at a time) while seated and comparing how my weight shifts and the mechanics of it on the good side vs bad side and the bent leg lift while laying on the floor I'm ready to go back to PT and see what the next step is. I'm not hurting like I was, probably due to the rest but i did do a short swim the other day and didn't have awful pain for a week like it has been. My PT figures it was probably more the fact that I sat on hard bleachers watching my daughter play volleyball after swimming rather than the swimming in and of itself. Which just may be right since this last time I went swimming I just went home afterwards and did just fine (YEA for tiny miracles!)

@aprilc Wonderful to hear you feeling so much better and learning how to avoid all the pain you were in. Fabulous news ~ keep on keeping on with your new slow & steady approach :) In a thread I this morning, someone was talking about "balance" between exercise, rest and getting on with life. Probably a good word to gie some thought to in terms of your recovery as well; I know I will be. :good-bad:

@aprilc, so glad you found out about the ball not seating properly and that there is a way to correct this with your exercise program. Nothing like a dangling carrot for an exercise junkie! So now you know! Great strides will be coming your way once you lay a solid foundation to build on. Let zero hip pain be your ultimate goal and the little ones will only enhance that lofty one!

@beachgal have you heard of that before? Really interesting. I think for those of us who have had hip problems for years (not just your run of the mill arthritis from the joint wearing out) need to be aware that our recovery may be different in that we have been super active in a super dysfunctional way, even when we think we are doing PT exercises correctly and can "muscle" through it, we're still doing things in a dysfunctional way and hurting not helping.

So happy to have figured out what was causing all the setbacks and now I'm focused on a functional hip - then eventually one I don't even think about. Wow imagine......

@toohip the PT figured it out. Ongoing hip flexor pain, flares up no matter what I did then she checked out the way I moved when I did the laying on back, legs bent and bringing leg up. HOpe that makes sense. gotta run!

Happy you finally got some answers. I recently decided to get a cortisone injection in my new hip. I just can't seem to get passed the pain. I'm 3 1/2 months out. It was very painful but I'm 2 days out from that. It seems to be helping some. I still go to PT in the pool and feel it's the best possible pt for me. I also need my right hip replaced but will wait as long as possible. That's where the pool pt helps take the weight of the right hip as well. It's done all the works for almost 9 months. A lot of people don't understand the complexity of a total hip replacement. It's different for everyone. I wish you all well. It's nice to read the replies and can relate to almost everyone of them

@fearbox So sorry to hear your still in pain but I can surely relate. Do you know what they injected? Was it a bursa sac?

Yes it was the bursa sac. I regret not having the injection done with an ultrasound guided injection. I've had many injections and this one was the worst. I use heat on it at least 3 times a day and take a lot of ibuprofen.
It's been a long run.

Hey all, just checking back in. I'm officially 5 1/2 months post surgery and I have been working out more and more. I'm up to about 1800 yds in the pool and I did a whole spinning class the other day! Working out doesn't cause pain in my hip for days afterwards and problems sleeping like it used to. I just have muscle soreness now! Love the muscle soreness and love feeling like i"m getting muscle back! So So weak!!

The last bit that continues to haunt me is my TFL (tensor Fascia Latae) it's a hip flexor muscle and it still hurts a lot. Got a cortisone shot the other day which seemed to help but then I tried a burpee and that flared me up again. I don't know how to calm it down and what I can do to help me get to the point where I can draw up my knee to my chest without pain (either lying on my back or on my stomach like with a burpee). I still have trouble lifting my leg to get into a car in the passenger seat, especially if it's a high car. So I"m working on that but so so happy that I can work out - just have to be smart about it.

Hi @aprilc and Merry Christmas!
Overall, you are doing great. I think I would hold off on the burpees. I haven't
tried one of those yet myself. Not brave enough!!!!

Hello everyone. I'm a little over 6 mo out from my LTHR. I still have quite a bit of pain on the outside part of the hip. I've had a cortisone injection, but that did nothing. I also still have a little struggle getting my leg in the truck. Nothing I can't handle though. I know I have to have my other hip done and psychological I am no where near ready for that. The question I have is, after this surgery I feel like I've lost something. I mean my memory is awful. Hard to explain other than I forget A LOT!!
Hope you all had a lovely holiday season.

Checking in again...Been working out pretty consistently, definitely feel so much stronger, especially in my glutes. Love having that feeling of muscle soreness after a good workout!

However, can't get rid of the hip flexor pain, I can barely lift my leg, still hurts to bend over and lift leg to put on pants, have to assist my leg when getting into a car and if I sneeze or laugh I get a bad stabbing pain in my hip flexor. They've tried a TFL injection on the outside of my thigh - did nothing. Tried your basic joint space xray guided injection - didn't help and then today had an ultrasound. Doc thinks my psoas is rubbing up against my capsule - so a nice painful injection into my psoas. He said it should really help and hopefully the pain will be gone forever, if not I'm looking at psoas release surgery. Really don't want a 4th operation on this hip but I also can't live with this hip flexor pain and the inhibition of movement/strength. It seems like it's impossible for my hip flexors to get stronger - I guess they're shutting down due to pain of rubbing against the capsule and being aggravated all the time?

I'm going to look around the forum to see people's experience with this surgery but if anyone wants to chime in please feel free!
