April, that is very cool, no pain with staples. I am thinking about posting a pic of my incision. I have a little redness showing up that concerns me. I think my shorts may rub the wrong way with no bandage at all. My steri strips have fallen off, all but two actually. Anyway, never a dull moment. My posterior incision healed right up no issues, but I have an issue with anterior now, maybe it is nothing.

Once the staples came off, I had the feeling that the incision was tender and would rub clothes, so have putting steri-strips on, just for comfort. Oh, and my knee is now super stiff too, probably from increased activity.

@waterman1 are you in physical therapy? Are they massaging the incision to keep adhesions from forming? You should ask them about it.

Not that I want to get into your underwear business but maybe some loose boxers for a bit?

Nope, no underwear just wear board shorts(surfer's bathing suit) everyday.

I am using a gauze bandage during the day, and it is helping with the irritation. Now that I am walking more and more, my board shorts rub the incision too much. Someone suggested just go naked or join nudist club for a few weeks, life is always full of choices I guess, LOL.

Those of you that are 3-4 weeks into recovery. What does a typical day look like to you? I spend some time watching tv in the morning waiting for my meds to kick in, I seem to hurt the most in the morning, probably bc I don't wake up at night to take meds anymore. Then go for a walk - .4 miles today according to my "map my walk" app, at a lightening fast pace of about 22 min/ mile! Then usually some recovery ie more couch and tv, then maybe some errands, usually have to pick one of my daughter's up from somewhere, maybe do dishes and or pick up some things at the grocery store. Then back to the couch, maybe some ice this time, and then not much after that. Today I plan to put in a second walk once the sun had gone down, it's wicked hot out there.

I feel like I'm couch surfing too much, just want to make sure I'm not underestimating what I can do, and don't want to experiment and over do it!

Sounds like you are overdoing it to me. Has the PT released you to 'walk as much as you want' yet?

Oh really?! Yeah, she basically said walking is good but not to overdo it. I guess I need to get some parameters from her. The .4 mile walk I just did felt good, did it yesterday too. I haven't started 2 a days yet. How far/much do you walk?

April, I am not measuring and I guess I should. What is the app you use on your phone? I am at Day 30 and was just told to 'walk as far as I want without any pain'. So I have walked a couple of blocks and back each day, that is about it and use a cane. I drive to Home Depot, walk in there with cart. I drive to grocery, walk in there using a cart. Remember, I am bilateral so probably weaker than you. How is your other hip? If you can do almost a half mile without pain, I would not add to it by shopping the same day maybe? The key is to walk pain free I would think.

The app is "map my walk". I don't really care about the map part but ugly start it and put your phone in your pocket and it tells you how far you went and the admit of time walking, then you can save the world to see your progression. I'm really not walking that far, you may be surprised at how far your walking. Oh and I did check the distance with the car so the app is accurate.

Don't have any pain, it feels good. And when I go to the grocery store its to get a couple of things. If I have to go too far in the store I get the fancy rolling chair.

Slow down my friend. At 3-4 weeks you are really pushing it. Errands, grocery store, dishes and driving to pick up your daughter - that's a ton of activity for so early out. If you are feeling great then so be it. But if you have any niggles - ease off. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

April, the above confirms my thoughts of 'herding all hippies' in recovery into one big place so we can coach each other during this humongous and lengthy days of boredom we all share. April is physically fit and has been moving at lightning speed her whole life. Now, just sit there and elevate and ice and enjoy being pain free. It is tough, we were taught to go,go,go - but not now...

And here I thought I was being too lazy!! I think I just need to be chained to the couch. This is such torture Bill, you're right! I just sit here and think about all the things I can't do, like paint my bathroom, yardwork...

So reduce the out of house activity? Since the walking isn't hurting I'm going to keep that. Where are you @MajorHeidi ? She was the one who said she was doing several small walks a day. What say ye? I really really don't feel like I'm doing too much. When I went out the other night for dinner and music at the pyb, that was too much and I felt it.

I don't usually don't do ALL of this regularly, every day. For example, yesterday I walked then rested, then went to PT, after PT picked up my daughter from drivers ed and dropped her off at the pool to work the came home and didn't do a whole hell of a lot after that. That's not too much right?

April, perhaps go a quarter mile twice daily would be helpful...

April, remember that you have a piece of titanium resting inside your soft femur bone. One tiny mistake, a twist, a fall, a car accident, and all that becomes the most horrific event. You feel so good to be out of pain that we forget that we must be so careful the rest of our lives.

"Being careful" is a relative term. Since I really don't think about my hip anymore, I am not unduly careful as I go through my day. I've had three falls since I had my hip and my knees done. The last one was a doozy. Neither my hip nor my knees suffered any damage at all----my face is a different story completely.

I'm not sure that it is necessary to be any more careful than we would be ordinarily as we live our lives. Certainly one wants to be more careful for several months after surgery, but after a year that hardly seems to be the case. If you end up like me---forgetting about the hip entirely---then being extra careful is going out the door anyway.

Yep, that was the point of my post ahead of yours. We are 3-4 weeks post op. Now we must be very careful. A year from now we can sustain a fall probably as you have. Therefore, Jaycee reminds us this is a marathon not a sprint.
