@Hoppy Nanny That's exactly what I needed to hear, thanks.

You have "the forgotten hip" as in you don't think about it 24/7? I haven't heard of it referred to as that but that sounds like pure bliss, to forget about my hip and not think if it anymore than I think of my thumb! To the forgotten hip time and beyond!

BTW I somehow think this sitting around would be much easier if it wasn't so beautiful outside!:surfer:

Yes, for sure..you will forget....never thought it would come but it did!! Have you a wheelchair? I sat outside in mine for short periods....know it's not easy to sit for too long....but 10/15 minutes or so in the sun? Xx

I only have the fore arm crutches but I think I week go ahead and get some sun. I'm in north Carolina which can be very humid, like today, so with my hot spells post surgery (did you get that where you just get really hot and start sweating for a bit?) I may do some outside evening time.

Oh yes...overwhelming hot & sweaty times! .....that doesn't last too long....perhaps a chair with a high seat in the garden in the early evening might be comfy and provide a different outlook. X

Hey April, just read your 'pre op' story, great reading well written of course. I noticed you are a swimmer, so my two cents is your hip will be 'longer lasting than most' as a swimmer. I enjoy swimming, belong to an indoor heated competition pool, and I am a passionate freediver. I can relate to your feelings when it hurt to 'kick off the side'. For me, when I could no longer use my legs for a simple breaststroke, I had to find a surgeon. I swam for many months with breaststroke only and not using my legs at all, if you can imagine doing that, crazy right? After my first hip surgery in April, I think it was a full six weeks before I was back in the pool. Reason being, you must let that incision heal completely to have zero risk of infection before returning to the water...

@aprilc, did not realize that Jo had put your post in the Library just thought it was an error on your part---sorry about that. I see that it has been put back. No harm, no foul.

I can't believe you were able to do breaststroke kick for so long. That was the first stroke to go for me, couldn't do the kick at all without pain. But I'm fine doing a workout without breast. Then it would hurt if I did too much kicking then deteriorated to the point of hurting to kick at all and pushing off the wall and that's when I stopped. I would like to say I continued on just pulling but not being able to fully swim kind of depressed me and I said screw it and gave up on working out totally. I then ran (figuratively obviously) to the surgeon!

I may have turned some kind of corner!! So excited!! Actually slept though my regular pain med dosing time and woke up naturally (as in pain didn't wake me up) around 8am. Also woke up with out a headached for the first time in days. So happy bc the waking up in pain and with a headache thing was really getting to me! Finally able to start backing off of meds a little bit (extend time between meds or amount of oxycodone I take at 1 time.) I was prescribed 1-4 pills (5 mg oxycodone) and needed the 4 every 3 hours have been scaling back to 3 pills and today i'm going to try 2!

Have a friend visiting me and bringing me lunch. She asked if I wanted to get out and go somewhere for lunch and it was SOOO tempting but I figured I would regret it if I did it - I'll be 1 full week post op tomorrow. I'm starting to understand the whole marathon not a sprint thing. We shall relax at home where I can lay down and eat :yes!:

@aprilc There you go, stay put if you can stand it for another week :( The better you feel, the more danger you become to yourself and healing correctly. Remember, all that new stuff in your hip has to 'join forces' with all the other stuff already in your hip LOL...

Brilliant! So glad you've turned a corner...keep up the good work! X

@aprilc and @waterman1
I resumed the breaststroke after I got back in the pool at 7 weeks I believe. (scabs have to ALL drop off to be safe from pool icky infections)......
Now at 12 weeks, doing breaststroke 6 days a week. Love it! :swim:
You will get there, too!

As others have said before me, do NOT be tempted to go out like a normal person yet and eat or shop.
Just wait so as not to do too much to make the muscles/tendons angry.

Man o man I cannot imagine going in a pool with an open incision, yikes!! OK, we can have a 'hippie breastroke contest' soon, I hope :)

@MajorHeidi @waterman1 it's on! Although breast stroke is not necessarily my best stroke. But we shall race for time and review for technique :) We can meet in my state, NC since it's between VA and FL or we can take video and post for all the hippies to review. :old:

I want to stretch and I want to swim in the worst way!!! Just cross my operative leg over my other leg (you know where you're ankle is on your knee?) and lean forward and stretch my IT band and piriformis oh that would be awesome right now. But yes I know in reality it would hurt like a b&#*ch!!

I was just looking at my oxycodone and I don't have much left! I'm 1 week out and my Rx says 1-4 pills every 3 hours. When I came home I was doing 4 pills every 3 hours, then went to 3 and now doing 2 -3 pills. Just got out of my first PT session and I'm sore!! I guess I just call the Dr. and ask for a refill? I have tons of oxycontin left, only taking that 1 every 8 hours but that alone does not keep the pain away. I feel like a ran out too quickly. They better give me a refill - oh now I'm stressing!

@aprilc You might ask for Tramadol if they say no to oxy? ( I took both oxycodone and tramadol and alternated these drugs in my schedule). It seems they are usually more willing to give out tramadol than oxy.

I'm at Day 15, got my bandage off and I asked for a refill today on Percocet and they said no problem. Call the doc, don't be shy and tell them to re-fill, I can't imagine them saying no to a hip replacement patient. I would raise the roof if they said no to me...

Definitely need it. They never called me back yesterday and I woke up this morning with only the oxycontin xr, thankfully they called me first thing and said they had called in the rx already so went with my hubby (first cups of coffee in hand) and fit the rx and got it filled. So nice to get out of the house every now and then. Don't do much just sit, reclining while hubby drives to pick up kids or whatever

@waterman1 Funny you should write that. Woke up today in more pain and haven't been pain free all day. This was after I made the executive decision to spread out my pain meds more - and it was working out OK yesterday. So yeah, I have been humbled, back to regular intervals, every 3 hours, for oxycodone and taking muscle relaxants even though they really make me tired with all the other drugs on board. Which brings me to...

@Poppet "if you won't die if it's not done, don't do it" Boy did I need to hear that today!! I've gotten in trouble twice today by my husband. One time I was trying to do the dishes and the other time I was trying to put a load of laundry in. He made me come lay down in the bedroom which is where I sit err lie. Probably the best place for me right now, I can't look around and drive myself crazy with all the things I wish I could be or should be doing. I'm not good at lying around doing nothing!

I too, made the executive decision to go to Norco instead of refilling Oxy, because I felt I was doing so well. What an ego I have! I was humbled at the OS today when he told me how intense my particular surgery was and that my pain expectations were unreasonable.

Wondering when people started to feel like they had turned a corner in their recovery? I'm at Day 6, getting frustrated with lying around all day. I seem to be getting headaches every morning which I think is from the pain killers so I'm trying to extend the time frames that I take meds but today I'm having sharp pains in my hip which is weird and new...so I guess today is not the day to change my med dosage. When did you feel like you were consistently doing better and you had turned the corner? I need something to keep me going!!

And yes @waterman1 I now see what you were talking about. I was so cocky at day 3 :)
I felt a turn at Day 9, but then pushed it too far by doing too much and reducing my medication type.
