@NoraJ
I missed your post about feeling a bit bummed the other day, but great to hear you feel you have turned a corner and are excited about your progress since. That is wonderful and I hope it continues. I agree about the long mental game, while we are all making it through, there are those moments that don't feel as good. Congrats on your recliner find and enjoy your weekend!

Thanks @grnplatebrd. .. the improvement is holding. I spoke to my PT about yesterday about my sense that I feel now is how I should have been 6 or 7 weeks ago. She agreed that I had been behind the normal recovery. But thankfully I seem to have turned a corner and I'm walking better. My back pain eases considerably and I feel a bit more normal!

The recliner has taken up position in my parents home and I wish I had it for my recovery but it's there for time around.

@NoraJ It makes sense that if your gait is improving the back pain will also improve. Very happy for you that you are seeing improvement and progress!

Thanks @Carriemay60. .. I had a gang of former work colleagues over last night for a get together. It was a lovely evening. I had prepared several tapas dishes earlier....it was a bit if work but I wasn't too worn by it all. I am still stiff on rising from sitting and it takes a few steps to straighten but hopefully that too will ease with time! I may be able to dance at the ball yet!

Hi @NoraJ - I just started out-patient PT yesterday and all they kept saying is everyone's recovery period is different and don't compare recoveries...i know that can be difficult. If you keep a log of your own progress, you will most likely see improvements over weeks (don't look at day to day, but week to week improvements). Your muscles are very used to acting a certain way prior to the surgery and now need to be "re-trained" and "strengthened" for you to walk and move the correct way. Just keep up the good work and all the best!!

@NoraJ That is fabulous that you managed to entertain without wearing yourself out ~ I think that is a true sign of progress! Even at the best of times entertaining can be tiring I know ~ right now I would be afraid of falling asleep in my chair if I had also done a bit of food prep, never mind a pick up and a wipe around the house. You better get looking at shoes Cinderella, I think you are off to the ball! :)

I completely agree with @toohip , I kind of use my thread as a bit of a log. I actually read through it the other day and realize I am certainly progressing, albeit slowly in my own way. I am sure your parents see noticeable changes in you when you go out for Sunday dinners. I can't imagine the habits those of you that had long term hip pain have. It is very hard to re-train those and I am sure it is an ongoing battle to overcome.

@NoraJ, I'm loving the "corner-turning" comment and let me just say...IT'S TIME!! So happy to hear that you are approaching the normalcy we all crave. Entertaining, even on a small scale, is great practice and builds your confidence, and is a great mood-elevator! When you have a few good friends together and everyone knows your journey, they WANT to be there and cheer you on! Kudos to you for giving them the opportunity to be supportive!
Way to go, girl!! :egypdance:

Thanks all for the support. The change did feel so long in coming. I'm back to the OS on Friday so he can decide for the PT if I should have a heel lift. That may also prevent further back pain.

Last night was great fun... could barely get a word in! Even a song or 2 at the end of the evening.

I'm taking it very handy today though...Some laundry and pottering. Have to rest to be able to make my blackberry jelly! I have enough blackberries collected to make about 10lbs. ...

Well I have some left in the freezer! We're having such lovely weather at the moment there is still plenty of picking to be done. I'll post a pick of the end result..if it's successful!

@Carriemay60,

The blackberry jelly is made...waiting in anticipation to see if it sets properly! I made about 10lbs which may have been a bit ambitious but I'm quietly confident.

The good news is no pain or discomfort during the jam making...I had gone shopping beforehand so it felt like very normal!

@NoraJ Way to go!! I am sure you are sleeping like a baby now though ( I hope!) We generally use black current jelly, but have used blackberry jelly as well for a sauce my grandfather used to make. It's for roast beef and in my humble opinion is lovely! About 3 parts jelly to one part yellow mustard (like hotdog mustard) to taste. I sometimes add a tsp or so of horseradish also to taste. Makes a very nice option to plain horseradish.

@Carriemay60 That recipe does sound good! I dont know what outlr equivilant to hotdog mustard is but I'm think dijon would work?

The good news is the jelly set. I don't like it too dense so I'm pleased with its consistency. I brought some to work today and it went down well. It passed the Irish Mammy test so all good!

@NoraJ Glad your jelly set up nicely. Hotdog mustard is that quite bright yellow mustard but maybe you don't get it there? I am sure Dijon would be nice also though.

I had my follow up appointment with my OS and had X rays done. He is very happy with progress since my last appointment. The X rays indicated all was good but bone graft has yet to fill in but that can take up to a year. He estimated the LLD is probably about a centimetre. But may feel longer due to pelvis and muscles. He recommended a slight heel raise to help balance me out.

He made the point that it will take the full year to recover fully. No surprises there I guess.

Thankfully no discussion on the need for the left hip to be done yet. I don't think I could even bear the thought of it at the moment.

He will see me again at one year unless I need to see him sooner. I must say I really like him and find him so personable! I guess having to go privately means I get to choose the OS which makes a huge difference. I was confused as to the origins of my protrusio. I had read about it being linked to dysplasia but he reckoned it was otto pelvis although I thought they were the same. But he estimates I was born with it and it just presented now.... rather than arthritis causing. But if anyone knows anything more I would love more information!

Overall a good visit. I just need to test my newly stable legs!

@NoraJ Yay for you!!! Really great that you are doing well enough to be released from regular visits and he feels you are doing so well. Hopefully that cm will sort itself out with time. I really wish I could feel the way you do about your OS. I do see my Thrombo doc almost as often as my OS ad he must be the world's biggest sweetheart though :)

Thanks @Carriemay60. I do like his manner. My uncle attended him last week about his hips and back. I think now knowing my condition is likely congenital on my maternal side has everyone more wary of their hips. I was relieved to hear my OS wasn't pushing my uncle at all. My uncle really liked him too.

I think in the back of my mind I was worried I rushed into the op. I was reassured he wouldn't have operated unless I needed it. Mind you he also said yesterday my right hip was in bits when I went to see him last November... I'm glad he kept that opinion to himself then and let me decide on when to have the op.

My left isn't as bad so I'll be holding out on that but even I could see the damage there on the xray.

I'm glad one of your doctors is nice. Hopefully your other appointment will join all the dots together.

@NoraJ I am sure it's very tempting to wait your left hip out as long as possible, especially given the slow recovery with this one. Do be careful not to wait too terribly long and wind up in the excruciating pain I read about so often here. Be kind to yourself in the longterm.
