Re: knee still tender after over a year

Tashia,

My doc never mentioned new shoes either. I found that out by reading posts on here.. So I went out and got new athletic shoes(which is what I usually wear outside) and what a difference, for the better, it has made.

Re: knee still tender after over a year

Rose, Isn't interesting that how all of us been treated so different from our surgeous and doctors. It almost makes me wonder on what different things were we told about recovery. The only common thread is to exercise, take pain medicane.. Exercise also varies so much. as how much pain pills and what kind. Thank Goodness we have this site to help with filling in the blanks. I usually wear athletic shoes the most too. I use to have a pair of boots but since I started having knee and hip problems I found myself giving up lots of hikes that would call for boots. Now that i know this i hope in time I will be needing them again. I had a very lazy day and stayed off my feet, hopefully tomarrow I hope to have a new pair. You gave me hope that I can have my life back. Thanks for the post. :doggieshmooze:Tashia:yahoo:

Re: knee still tender after over a year

Tashia, it is quite possible that needing new shoes and orthotics can contribute to foot and leg problems after surgery. I have no idea why surgeons don't pass this information on to their patients.....but we always tell folks to do that here on BoneSmart. After all, it does make sense that you would be off balance with your old wear patterns and formed orthotics once everything is put right.

Have you tried icing your knees when they hurt? That can help....especially at night in bed if they bother you then.

Re: knee still tender after over a year

Jamie, Now that all this has been brought to my attention you are right. I didn't wear shoes at all today and my feet don't hurt and the swelling on both feet are also down greatly. as for my knees they are better too. I can't believe how postive and happy I am feeling right now. I know its late but I sleep most of the day also. I don't use ice well so just before bed i heat a herb wrap and when i lay down I put it on it. I fall asleep before it losses its warmth. It has lavender and some other oils in it. It just relaxes me and i sleep most of the night. Isn't that Great! I was really getting worried about how much pain I was having but I feel now I can get on top of it. Thank you so much. There are no words that can be used to express how much it ment to me. :doggieshmooze:Tashia:hapydancsmil:

Re: knee still tender after over a year

Tashia -Thanks for the compliments on my goofy retriever .Oliver just had his 3rd birthday and he still thinks he's a pup...but he is beautiful and my real motivation to get stronger. Sadly he's at home in Toronto while I'm recuping in Florida and I do miss him. As I said to someone else, my husband says I can only come home when I can walk Ollie !

Think about another pet...having one is great motivation for getting up and going...:thumb:

Re: knee still tender after over a year

Oh isn't it dissapointing.
After a TKR, new shoes are a necessity.....
That is music to my ears!!!!

Re: knee still tender after over a year

Trainwreck, i did get a new pair of shoes today and also inserts. I was surprised that i was able to get my size first time out. Now I am in the process of breaking them in. Since i got rid of all my shoes except my dress shoes, I am having trouble in getting ride of my boots because they are in such good shape and haven't been worn much because me not being able to walk much. So I might try them with the new inserts. I'm so glad we have such good people that listen or read and care about us. but you also need to take care. :doggieshmooze:tashia:hapydancsmil:

Can't you get new soles and heels to make them as new?

Re: knee still tender after over a year

Thanks that was a good idea but all my shoes were tennis shoes and it would cost me the same or more replacing them. They were at least a couple of years old. I was thinking of getting new ones but just never got around to it. I do know you are surpose to get news shoes before they start falling apart but that when I usually wait till they do. I have the new shoes on and so far so good. :doggieshmooze:Tashia:happy dance:

Well, some probably could, Roy. But some of us have special issues. In my case I have to have a half inch sole lift for my left shoe.

As a result of my total right hip replacement in 2010, my left leg is now 1/2" shorter than my right. Only the two days after my LTRK and before my RTRK were my legs again the same length. :snork:

When you consider that decent shoes cost at least $50.00 if no more and having the left shoe modified cost about the same---I wish you could just go to your local shoe repair shop---but they usually don't do this type of work or don't do it well.

I'm making do for the present---but I'm going to have to put out quite a few bucks in the next couple of months and before my husband is scheduled for possible TKR for both knees in late spring.

But your suggestion might just work for those without an issue like this. Judy

OK, I'm sorry, I take it back. In any case I was taking the mickey a bit. Telling ladies not to buy new shoes -- Dice with Death why don't ya?

Re: knee still tender after over a year

Tonight or should or good morning, the new shoes seem to work a little better. My legs aren't as sore. :doggieshmooze:Tashia:yes 4:

Re: knee still tender after over a year

Hmmm... new shoes - had not thought of that, at least not to improve my knee discomfort. I have had foot issues for years - bunions, overlapping toes. I got inserts a couple of times, have to wear toe separators when need for comfort (most of the time when walking) --- but the last foot doctor I went to (maybe 5-6 years ago?) said nothing can be done for my feet, not even new inserts. He said to always get shoes with a wide toebox and contour foot bed - and narrow heel if possible. He recommended a brand of athletic shoes that I have always worn since then, buying new ones about every 6 months as well as changing shoes periodically so I do not wear one set too long. Until now, have worn low heels for "dress-up" where not much walking was involved. While I am in the house, I wear slippers with a contour foot bed (have more than one style to vary foot pressure). OK - here it is -- are people in forum saying I should go back to a foot doctor for a new assessment and maybe new inserts? Should I have a pair of athletic shoes just for wear in the house instead of slippers? Could wearing slippers be an issue? Should I just continue with what I am doing? Last time, I went barefoot for awhile --- I did not do that this time - what a mistake!

Re: knee still tender after over a year

NHKneeLady, I wish I knew the answer myself. the reason I am going to see my foot doctor is I have a bone that is deforming and I don't want it to continue; I haven't goten shoes for years so they are pretty shot anyway. So I got them. I have been told by many people that every six months or a year you are to replace them. I wait years. Deep down I know thats not smart. Lets see what the ones who know more than me give the answers because I sure don't have the answer. I go barefoot a lot too so am I doing something wrong? I don't know. Lets see Jamie and the other say. I wish I knew how to Flag them but I don't. I agree it does get confusing doesn't it? :doggieshmooze:tashia:confused:

Re: knee still tender after over a year

Tashi, Indeed - it is confusing and probably what works for one does not work for another. Am looking forward to hearing what the experts say - meanwhile, I put athletic shoes on today (in the house) to see if it helps -- I will do ANYTHING that helps! Do we have a list of possible things to try relieve knee pain that we might not have thought of?

Re: knee still tender after over a year

Today I went to my foot doctor. Good news! Both feet aren't in as much trouble I was afraid off However I did need some new inserts. When the mold was made with the right foot which had the knee and hip total replacements were straight as it could be. However the other side the left were I need a knee replacement does not goes straight down, its turns a little inside before it hits the floor. So this foot need a new inserts. When I see him next he wants me to bring my old foot molds to compare them to see how much it has changed. It will two weeks before I will have the new inserts. Now how much will this help my knees he couldn't say. He did like my new shoes so that good. My knees are a little tender tonight which I'm not surprised. When I got the inserts the first time I do remember my knees were hurting so here hoping. He did notice were I was sore and mentions some exerise I need to do. I didn't ask him about how often did I need to get new shoes or inserts I was so glad that nothing serious was going on with my feet. I want to get out of pain so bad. I feel like I could be in depression because I really don't have much interest in what I really enjoy. I just have monemts with being interesting with sewing then it goes away. Because I live alone I am concern about it. :doggieshmooze:tashia:skeptical:

Re: knee still tender after over a year

Boy, Tashia....I want you to come over and do that lavender wrap for ME!!! It sounds delightful and I'm so happy it helps you sleep.

Good news about your new shoes and inserts. It sounds like you are on the right path to becoming pain free.

Elizabeth, I do think you should go see a good podiatrist or orthopedist that specializes in foot problems to be re-evaluated. Any time you have a realignment (:th_heehee: sounds like wheels on a car, doesn't it!!!), everything changes and you can have problems if you don't readjust your footwear also. If whatever doctor you see tells you that nothing can be done for your feet, I believe I'd try a different doctor. When a person has foot issues, it's pretty rare that something can't be done to improve the situation.

Re: knee still tender after over a year

Jamie, i've never thought of my feet as wheels but they do touch earth as we travel. I have found that herbal wraps are getting harder to find. I can't understand why. Good thing you can make them.. Take carel:doggieshmooze:Tashia:sigh:

Re: knee still tender after over a year

NHKnee Lady, I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. You asked me for subjection for knee pain, the library would be the best bet. I have gone there and there is lots of ideas. Some have work some haven't. It like each one of us are diffenent. Walking is the best however I did find out I needed shoes and new inserts. I am now working on them. Last night it was great but this morning my hip is score so I will try something hopefull it will work. :doggieshmooze:tashia:grouphug2:
