Today is post op day 4.
Feeling better every day. İts nice to be home. The only "can't tolerate" situation is number of people calling and visiting.
İ havent took so many pain killers in my life and am falling asleep duing the day like a new born.
One thing that i noticed today is that my palms are hurting so much due to holding the crutches. İ will see whether i can find the arnica cream that clifford149 was mentioning. İ also feel muscle pain on my back in the upper body, again due to the effort given to use the crutches. Thus Josephine Was so right that we need to make our upper body prepared for the operation :-)
My pain level is probably around 1 out of 10, thanks to God, and it is only on my gluteus (buttocks) muscle if i sit/ lie in bed for long period. İts kind of getting sore. Thus it helps very much to move around every 2 hours for 5 minutes.
İm taking care of what i eat. No junks, only vegetable and proteins, mediterranan food primarily.no bowel problems in spite of so many drugs.

sansabosa, I wish. Xareolta is approved by FDA for a-fib, but using it for DVT prevention is off- label here, and my doctor wouldn't hear of it, even when I produced several studies describing its use in Europe. :(

Hi Selin,

Your updates have been wonderful!! Bless your parents having to hear about another surgery for you, how thoughtful to wait until afterwards to share the news.

I am so glad they got your metal hardware out, that is very exciting!! :yay:

So, my suggestion is that you ask your husband to be the gate keeper and politely tell your loving friends that you are napping now and will be in touch soon. He can do this with the phone calls and with the well meaning folks that might show up unexpected at the door. He might even suggest that you need a week or two to re-gain your strength so that you can have some quite time. Don't feel guilty, you'll have plenty of time to socialize in the weeks to come when you aren't drowsy from your meds and from all the healing that is going on right now. Plus, you want to protect yourself from any "germs." Not to sound like a germ phobic, but when you are recovering you don't want some well meaning friend to come visit with a cold they may pass along.

I know that you said your OS gave you the crutches for a few weeks. Do you have the kind of crutches that are in your arm pit area or the kind that are at your forearm? Either way, when your PT person arrives have them make sure they are adjusted correctly and see if there are any suggestions for increasing your comfort while using them. You want to be able to move around every hour without being held back by arm/hand pains.

Good news that your digestive system is working happily and not bothered by the meds!!!! :thumb:

Take care,
Cardie

I was also lucky to get oral blood thinners, good for you! Hope you are cosy at home and getting lots of good food and rest...remember to eat those prunes... Xxx

İ havent took so many pain killers in my life and am falling asleep duing the day like a new born.
There is a good reason for that - keeping you resting! It's chemical way of nailing your feet to the floor!

Josephine Hi.
İ have a question to you.
İ have a sharp pain lasting for a couple of seconds on the scar area rather superficial, like under the skin. İ assume it may be a sign of either muscle stretch or the healing of the sutures under the skin? Or the inflammation area getting smaller? Any interpretation?

Drbabs Xarelto is prescribed for THR patients here in Canada.. usually we're behind you!

İ have a sharp pain lasting for a couple of seconds on the scar area rather superficial, like under the skin.
I hope you mean you 'get' a sharp pain. 'Have' rather implies it's there permanently! But you cannot be surprised at this, surely - you are only 5 days out of surgery!

Oh, yes, i "get"sharp pain for a few seconds. Today i realized its related to tissue healing under the incision area.

Probably until the end of week 1 i"ll write everday to share the progress.
Today its post op day 5.
İ had my first home PT session today. İt was longer than the one in the hospital and although there were additional exercises, including some that needed more effort, the progress in my capability of movements was remarkable. Each time the PT stretches me to my limits, it feels scary or difficult at first but i feel much better at the end. With some icing afterwards, all is under control.

İ realize that it is important to do some of the exercises, slowly but surely, in the absence of the PT as well not to feel sore or stiff. But it needs to be in balance in terms of frequency and severity as we are not in a race.
İ do feel that i walk better each day and can walk with one crutch but prefer to use 2 for 3 weeks for my specific condition which is to protect my other hip.

Muscles on my buttock still hurts if i sit too long and i was wondering whether it helps to buy from those air circulating cushions. Does anyone have any experience with those special cushions? İs there an added value or the soreness will go away in a couple of weeks when those muscles get stronger?

The funny anectode from today was that both my mother and mother in law visited me at the same time today at my house. They are both 72 and physically healthy, thanks to God.
Both brought me some healthy food that they cooked for me, vegetables primarily!. İ sensed a kind of rivalry in between them which i enjoyed, to be frank, and felt like a spoiled little girl -:)
My daughter on the other hand, who is a grown up lady aged 23, is somehow in a mode of "want to help, but can not" and is also affected psychologically i suppose. The care and interest of my husband with me in the last couple of days doe not make her very comfortable (:-

Hi Selin

I love reading your updates, you sound like you are doing really well for so early on. I love the story of your mother and mother-in-law, I can just picture that! :heehee:

I love your attitude Selin. I hope I can replicate it after my surgery. Keep up the work and prayers are still coming your way.

Selin, reading some of your posts, your English is better than many who use it as their first language. How did you become so fluent?

Hi Selin,

How wonderful that your whole family is vying for the best care taker award and trying in their own special way to be helpful. I'm sure there is a little part of your daughter that is worried about your health and may not be used to seeing you in a vulnerable position as a patient after your big surgery... My kids were a bit taken aback when I first came home too. My daughter is a bit younger than yours, we spent time each day watching a movie together in the early weeks.

On your sharp sensation in your scar area -- is it a little like a bee sting or an electrical shock like sensation? You are so right, there are tissues and nerves that are healing and re-connecting and coming back to life after the surgery.

Is your scar lateral (on the side of your hip) or posterior (on the back/buttock area)? For the soreness in your buttocks you could try different cushioning, but I'd also suggest that you try to spend a little more time upright and either walking in your house or just standing for periods of time -- but not leaning heavily on your crutches. I also found it helpful to take a little time in the afternoon to lie in bed with a book reading and napping as the urge hit. More frequent position changes may help you feel more comfortable and yes, that soreness will get better with time and continued healing!!

Take care,
Cardie

That was funny Selin, your Mother and Mother in law fighting over you, how sweet, just shows how much they care :) It will be difficult for your daughter seeing her Mam incapacitated, even though she has watched you suffering pre op this stage is worse than that but it will soon be over and you can get back to running around after everybody again.lol.....I know, I've been there and done that. My Husband and sons were fantastic post op but as soon as I started doing most of the stuff again they soon went back to their old ways. I don't mind, they were there doing everything when it was needed.

You are doing brilliantly, that's a joy to hear.i agree with Cardie, the bottom soreness can be a pain...haha literally...but I woild just have a little tootle around the house which would ease it a lot.

Take care

Ann

Post op day 6

Everyday, there is an improvement. My husband says that my posture while walking is much better than yesterday, which is fabulous since i've been limping for a long time.
İ can not sit or lie for a long time since my buttock muscle gets sore and says its time to get going, walk!
İ had my second shower since the operation, but this time at home which was much easier than i had expected. İ just needed a hand not to slide.
İ forgot to take one of the pain killers during the day time (i have 3 different) and i realized hours later that it was ok, no pain. Was it a coincidence, i dont know. The funny part is, i still fall asleep during the day time like a new born in spite of enough sleep during the night. No worries, no hurries.
İce application continues, now around 20 minutes each time, probably for 5-6 times a day. İ practice the exercises 2-3 times per day by myself but of course it is not as "pushy" as it is with the presence of the PT. She will come home for the second time tomorrow.
Tomorrow it will be 1 week post op. My surgeon mentioned that after 10 days post op you may go out. Well, i will listen to my body.

C Mac,

Hi Cardie,
My incision is latero-posterior. Most probably it would not have been possible for the surgeon to take out the plate and the screws that had been inserted 21 years ago with an anterior approach. The metal was just on my lateral.
The " bee-bite" pain lasts for 3-5 seconds while at rest and is just under the incision area superficially. İts a good sign i assume, the healing of the sutures under the skin.
The swelling decreases day by day as well. The incision area is still relatively hot due to inflammation and though icing helps it still takes its natural course of time to heal.

Hi Ann,
Thanks for your remarks.
İ agree that whenever it gets sore, i need to get up and walk. İ think thats the best remedy.
İ look forward for the time i will be able to start swimming again.

Thank you ukisgr8
İ went to an American higshool in istanbul, thus my english is from the higschool education. İ use it in my daily business as well, since İ've been working in the pharmaceutical industry in multinationals for years now. But i've always lived in istanbul and would recommend highly to plan a visit in case you have not been here before and once your are over with all the hussle of your operation.
