THR Chappyd's recovery story

Congratulations on your surgery and recovery! it seems to be going really well. I am 7 weeks out and have been overdoing it (for me) a lot the last 2 weeks as I get energy but I feel it afterwards (long walks) so take it easy.
Nice and slow. Its such a delicate balance. Hope each day gets easier and easier for you.

Oh boy, long walks! Thanks lotusbuds, I do feel ok, but I still have a long way to go. Haven't pushed it too much yet, though yesterday evening i got a good scare when I was sitting on a swiveling desk chair, and I just turned a bit and felt just a smidge of that bad movement. I wish I could have a body brace. Must remain conscious of the 3 bads, twisting, 90 deg. And crossing. :no-fin:

7 days. So far so good. Walked up my driveway using a cane with my PT, about 200' total. Feels good to get outside. She said I could do this walk again today, and then slowly increase the distance day by day, being careful to wait to go too far. lots of trouble sleeping last night though. I hope that doesn't keep up for too long :bored:. Iv'e still got a bunch of swollen leg muscles, but each day brings an incremental difference in the right direction. I still have the sensation of my operated leg being just a tad longer than the other. The PT said that will pass.

It's funny thinking about my hip joint when I'm walking. I try to mentally visualize it working in there. I guess it's because it really doesn't feel any different, just NO PAIN :yes!:

Good to hear that you're doing so well. Being outside is a real mental boost for sure! So odd when I stop and realize that I'm walking and nothing hurts. It's hard to picture that ever happening before surgery. So keep up the good work. I hope you're still icing and elevating during the day to help with your swelling; really does work!

l know right? That is the weirdest feeling expecting it to hurt....and then it doesn't. I think too that because were not really pain free. The surgery pain I would rate low now, but I still find myself waiting for the old hip pain when I walk. Ice is nice!!

:ice:

Amazing!!!! If I wasn’t so scared of the stairs, I’d love a little driveway walk. Maybe later this week [emoji5]

It was pretty amazing! How could something as simple as walking 1/2 way down the driveway be so small but yet so big? I think you will be out before you know it. When I walk on my one new joint, I think about you and what that would be like to have them both like that at the same time. If I had needed both done I think doing them at the same time would be the only way to go. Tougher in the short term but you only have to do it one time!
I'll be following your progress :)

That’s my thinking... one recovery, maybe a little longer/slower, but one.

I keep telling myself that I can’t compare myself to you (but I want to)!

I feel so much better today than yesterday, so I’m thinking a little fresh air is in my near future!

Yes I did! :) Again today too, and I think later I will go out in the yard around the house! Been away from the pain meds for a couple of days now, the oxycodone was just about done anyway, and I didn't really need it anymore, though I wonder if it would have helped with sleeping. Mostly now I have some swelling and sore muscles around where the incision is. The feeling of the leg being longer is going away as well. I think it is more of a stability thing- The operated leg is learning how to work right again I think. Indoors I am not using the cane much at all, I use it outside but feel like I would be ok without it. (Not gonna try it) That 3rd leg comes in handy :heehee:

Last night I did manage to get about 5 hours sleep. It seems as night settles in I get more restless. I was still up at 3 am. I am a side sleeper, so I put a pillow in between my legs, but more often than not its fallen out when I wake up.

That's all really great news @Chappyd and you aren't even 2 weeks post-op yet. The sleep thing is definitely hard but to get 5 hours in a row is pretty good. It will get better just as your walking has gotten better. You're on the right road......or driveway :heehee:

Congratulations on your new hip and reaching so many milestones already. Walking outside is my next goal. Interesting reading about your feeling on your leg post surgery. I have noticed mine feels longer too. Had restrictions due to broken bone, so late to cane and walking party. Your PT sounds great. Humor is always helpful. :yay:
