ByGosh - I just caught up. Sorry your daughter has had such a time of it, but glad you all enjoyed the Dove Bars!
LeeApril26, I was horsecrazy, too..... and we never could afford it. So three colleagues and I started up when I was 40! I did it for about a dozen years, until my first hip got too bad. And now I couldn't possibly afford it, anyway! But i'm glad I finally had the chance to live out my childhood fantasy.
One of my buddies was able to buy a horse, and I have ridden him a little from time to time, even last Fall.

ByGosh you might check around your area and see if you can find any mindfulness meditation classes. I live in Albuquerque, NM which is a fairly large city for New Mexico and took a class some years ago based on Kabat-Zinn's work. We learned various types of meditation...including a walking one which I really enjoyed. Everyone in the class was dealing with significant lifetime stuff and the class was very helpful. It was offered through continuing education from our local university.

ByGosh Thanks so much for the info about pap smears-I did not know it took 25 years to develop. I will see what my gyn says-hopefully the same. I had read about that, and also that mammograms can be every other year after 65, I believe. Since I just turned 65 in June I am hoping I get a respite. I have made appointments for the dental cleaning, check up (kidney and liver tests) and the gyn. Hoping I don't need a mammogram for a while.
My brother has gabapentin and it helps a bit when he takes it, but he is very nervous about medications, as he lost one kidney to cancer. (He has had prostate, kidney and skin cancer.) He can not take NSAIDS or many other meds.
I listened to a BodyScan meditation on YouTube. It mentioned Kabat-Zinn in the title, but was narrated by someone else. It was very relaxing. I also listened to a couple of talks by Kabat-Zinn. I will look for his book when I get back to the city next week. (We drove to the country on Monday.) I am taking a yoga class tomorrow, taught by a woman who got her yoga teaching certificate at 71. She is supposed to be mindful of joint issues. We'll see. Have not taken a yoga class in more than a year. Hope I can get on the floor.

Can your doctor test you for inflammation-CRP-would that tell you? When do you start the prednisone? Of course you can't give up, and there are other things you haven't tried-acupuncture, ultrasound, medical massage - all supposed to be helpful. Hopefully you won't have to try them all.

As for our fantasy cruise, avoiding the Somalian pirates seems like a good idea, but I have always wanted to go to the Greek isles, so please see if that is safe to include.

And, point me in the direction of the insensitive nurse you know. I will be happy to give her a bop. When your children were young, did you sing the Little Bunny Foo Foo song? He scooped up all the field mice and bopped them on the head. I seem not to have outgrown it.

Songlady I haven't been on a horse since my daughter was six, and she is 39. Don't think I would be able to do it now. How nice that your friend has a horse. In NYC that would be an extraordinary expense.

@LeeApril 26 I just read your post about being the assigned tripper and bopper for insensitive jerks. Please let me know when you are ready to start tripping and bopping -- I have a few people I'd like to add to your list. If one more person tells me it is no big deal and that their 106 year old aunt Hattie did the tango on Dancing with the Stars the day after her surgery, I feel like I'm going to lose it completely and punch someone right in the nose!

Even better are the people who want to argue with you about whether you can do this or that right now (I'm still pre-op and pretty miserable) and try to talk you into doing something or helping out with something that you couldn't do to save your soul right now 'Surely you aren't refusing to help with the annual armadillo races for the benefit of the Children's Hospital this year!??" This as I stand there all hunched over on my two canes. That person deserves BOTH tripping and bopping.

Butterfly Can we bop Aunt Hattie, too? If you do punch someone in the nose, please let me know because I will happily testify in your defense. Pre-surgery one of my very close friends was miffed because I was unwilling to take the subway to Manhattan and go with her to a street fair, among other activities. Can you imagine? I could barely make it into the kitchen from by chaise by then. I kept explaining until finally I just avoided her calls for a while, and we've been friends for 32 years. She also wanted to wander around IKEA. Ugh!
I think you should be putting at least one of your canes to better use, by tripping that person. Perhaps she/he will develop empathy after the fall :yay:

LeeApril26 I have someone to add to the list while we are at it..... Yesterday as I was leaving work this guy caught up to me and asked if I wanted him to knock the heel off my shoe so I could walk without a limp. I only wish I had been wearing shoes with a 3+ inch heel so I could have hit him with it.....

ByGosh Sorry we are gathering on your porch and hijacking your thread again. It is just such a cozy welcoming place, we just can't help ourselves. BTW....waited all day for the OS office to call, walked away from my cell for 5 minutes and yep, he called....so now back to waiting.

Kylesh At times like those I'll bet you wish you had your cane close by. Why do people feel compelled to say things like that? A three inch heel could have been put to very good use.
I freely admit that I could lose a significant amount of weight but when I was younger and really struggling with it, some random person would say something like "You have such a pretty face," or "You'd be so pretty if you lost weight." I always wanted to hit them, or respond by saying, "Oh, thank you! I would never have noticed if you didn't mention it." Or, even better, "And you'd be a nice person if you weren't so d___ rude." Unfortunately I am too polite respond or bop-so I have 65 years of pent up rage. Let me at that guy.

ByGosh
I was reading about tendonitis in your shoulder and i was wondering if you have ever looked into dietary causes of inflammation? If not it may be something worth trying. Allergy testing has its limitations and some people feel that you are better to just experiment with it yourself. I am positive that sugar makes it worse for me....also red wine , dairy and any type of sauce/condiment that comes from a jar. If I stay away from them it doesn't totally take away all the inflammation but it does have considerable impact. You may be familiar with the common allergens to try avoiding if you aren't already, but if not just google.

@LeeApril 26
Kylesh

It never ceases to amaze me how unthinking people can be when they are opening their mouth. I sincerely hope I've never been guilty of such a thing -- I WAS taught empathy and respect and politeness when I was a child, but it seems some people were not. I just can't imagine saying something like that person said to Kylesh about the shoe. That was worse than just unthinking -- it was downright cruel and was meant to be. Hope Karma catches up with that jerk.

ByGosh I'm also sorry to hijack your thread, but as Kylesh said, it is just so irresistible here! I'll get off your porch and go back to my own now. :puppysmooze:

Butterfly No need to leave the porch, I love the company and the conversation! :) Please, feel free to linger and relax, I'll make some fresh squeezed lemonade and put on some nice relaxing music, unless we all feel like trying the mindful meditation - whatever. It's great to have such a wonderful support group of kind and sensitive ladies, isn't it? I'm happy to have you here. By the way Butterfly, we'll be taking a virtual Fantasy Cruise of a Lifetime and you and Goody2Shoes3 and sandpiper are invited, too. The Greek Isles are a very good suggestion LeeApril26. I've always wanted to go there myself. We can get some delicious fresh halloumi cheese on the island of Cyprus.
Which reminds me, my husband found some halloumi at our local Stop & Shop, and I fried it and served it with some basil. It had a nice texture, didn't melt, but was a bit salty for me (I watch the salt intake). But it was very tasty and a nice change. Now I want to try the paneer which is an Indian cheese made like tofu that Littlejem recommended.
LeeApril26 I just had the CRP repeated again and it's normal. Everything is normal - sed rate, WBC, etc. Anything that could indicate inflammation, infection or rheumatoid arthritis is negative.
I started the Prednisone on Tues and felt a little better yesterday, but the MD visit seems to have negated any improvement, I think. I'll see how it goes as the weeks progress.
Thank you for reminding me that I have other methods to help me! I should find an acupunture MD sooner than later and perhaps I can do some PT with ultrasound. I appreciate your degree in logic, Lenora - you always come up with sensible suggestions. :)
You brought back memories! "Little Bunny Foo Foo hopping thru the forest, scooping up the field mice and bopping them on the head" Okay, you're Bunny Foo Foo and the insensitive, unkind people will be the field mice - bop away!

Kylesh That man sounds like a total boor. What malicious pleasure would someone get from being unkind? Was he just so totally ignorant that he didn't know any better, or was he being mean on purpose do you think? Or was he such an immature a** that he actually thought he was funny? Either way, he's a field rat and will get the hardest bop of all! With the metal cane, Lenora!
I completely agree with Butterfly that it's unbelievable how people can be. They deserve more than bad Karma - although people do things like that because there's something going on in them, or something that has gone on that's painful - he was probably treated like that during his lifetime, so he's acting out his unhappiness and trauma. But still! No excuse! :no-fin:
And you don't limp, by the way - you have a sexy wiggle. And he's just jealous because you'd never give him a second look.

Goody2Shoes3 Thanks for the info on the anti-inflammatory foods. I follow a healthy diet with very little sugar or white flour - mostly fruits, vegs, some cheese, whole grains, no fatty meats, no red meat. But I'll look up more and see if it can be improved some, just for you.

Songlady Glad you're back with us now and I hope you enjoyed a lovely time in Maine with Songman, Songboy #1 and SongSally, your friend.

Butterfly I'm sorry you're so miserable dear. The surgery's getting closer, though. Maybe they'll call you with a cancellation yet and you'll get in sooner. I hope so! Until then, please keep visiting and commiserating with the rest of us. We know just how you feel.:friends:

ByGosh I'm so glad you know Little Bunny Foo Foo. My godchild, a mature 27, still sings it to me. She was very fond of the bopping part.
Thanks for the heads up about the salt in the Halloumi-I didn't find it at the Middle Eastern foods store, but will perhaps reconsider looking. Trying to avoid to much of that in our house. Sounds good though. Maybe as an occasional treat??
Thanks for sharing your front porch. I just read a recipe for lemonade with basil syrup-boiling sugar, water and basil into a simple syrup to mix in the lemonade. Also trying to avoid sugar, but it sounds so good. We could have it virtually on your porch.

LeeApril26 Oh, that sounds delicious - very gourmet-ish. I love lemons, love basil so I imagine together they would make a tasty combination.
The halloumi is about as salty as feta, but has a nice mild taste. It would probably perk up a salad if used like feta.

Mindfulness with Jon Kabat-Zinn

That's the name of the Body Scan meditation by Kabat-Zinn on YouTube if you're interested in listening to it. There's a picture of smooth rocks balanced on one another on the cover of the CD. I can't figure out how to post a link to it, but if I do, I'll send it along to you.

And you don't limp, by the way - you have a sexy wiggle.

ByGosh you always manage to make me smile just when I need it. :egypdance:

LeeApril26 and Butterfly, I don't think that he really wanted to be mean. He knew I had my hip replaced and I think that some people are just wanting to say something when they should just keep quiet and the wrong thing comes out.

ByGosh I'll pull up a rocker, may I? Thanks for that basil-lemon-ade-- it's terrific, and I can use the cooling right now!
So you started the prednisone-- how long does it take to build up in your system? It's encouraging that you initially felt better, so maybe the after-effects of the gyn visit were to be expected, and might have been worse if you hadn't started the prednisone. Still praying for good good results asap!

it's been so busy here that I'm lost (at sea! with a Canadian masseuse and all the chocolate diamonds I can eat. Did we mention champagne anywhere? Virtually is the only way I could drink it, so I say, let's pop a cork or two!):cheers2: Sleep well, my friend! :)

Oh yes, champagne zauberflöte How could we forget about champagne? I think because I was side-tracked with a Tequila Sunrise by glynis. But we'll have to at least have a toast to all of us who've endured THRs...Canadians with chocolate-strawberry-diamonds, or not, we still deserve a toast! :cheers2:

Hi ByGosh and everyone else. I was walking by and saw you all on the porch so thought I'd stop and visit. ByGosh, you might want to make some rhubarb lemonade for those on pain meds....I actually saw a recipe for it yesterday. Not something I'd like to try, but it might be useful. :heehee: I am so looking forward to our trip....the only time I've ever been out of the States was to go to Canada years ago. I have a few people to add to Lenora's list too...honestly, do some people even think before they open their mouth? Nothing else new going on with me, just having an "easy" week after last weekend. (family reunion) It's good to be able to come and catch up with everyone here.

I don't know who first came up with the idea of the GoshPorch, but it's a charming image.

Here is another porch I thought we could sit out on if we decide on the Greek Islands for our virtual trip.
broken link removed: https://www.tsitouras.com/tsitouras-collection.php

The island is Santorini. Cyprus is certainly Greek, ByGosh (although the Northern part belongs to Turkey), but it a little separate from what are generally considered to be the Greek Islands. It is much busier and more developed than islands such as Santorini.

I've never been to this island, but I became interested in it after watching an episode of The World's Richest People. The owner of this hotel is an interesting man. All his life he has been fascinated with art, beginning with spending every minute he could as a child visiting the classical Greek museums and galleries in Athens. He now has a priceless collection of pieces, and some are used in this hotel, which he runs with his daughter. Some of the pieces displayed in the bedrooms are worth hundreds of thousands.

I think a year might be too long, though, Lee April. We all have our check-ups and dental appointments, and smears, and eye examinations, and mammograms to go to, after all. Some of us struggle to get a straight answer out of our medical professionals in English. Greek might turn out to be A Lexicon Too Far.
