Poppet. You know... Sometimes you do more than you can imagine for your spouse by allowing them to care for you. I know its difficult when you are used to being the one to look out for and care for others. Just think of what a charitable act on your part! See.... You are still taking care of others!

ByGosh. Not to worry my friend. Removing wisdom teeth is quite routine. Your daughter will be fine. They usually prescribe something like Percocet for pain for afterwards and I'd recommend she go ahead and take it..... Just like with us... In the beginning you want to be sure you are not chasing the pain. My biggest and most important piece of advice ( sorry... Forgot to mention that I was in the dental field before the education field) is to NOT rinse or swish the sockets. The reason being she does NOT want to rinse put the blood clots from the sockets. This results in what is called " dry socket" which is very painful. People usually tend to think you should rinse out the hole after an extraction. Not true. Also she should be careful to avoid the extraction areas with her toothbrush. Otherwise it's a pretty quick recovery. She may experience a good bit of swelling, also normal. Most people wind up with Chipmunk cheeks for a few days. Soft foods are best. Nothing hard and nothing salty or spicy. Believe me... She will do just fine! Hope you don't mind jumping in and giving my 2 cents. Let me know how she does! :)

It's mostly because I'm not 100%, and feel less 'able' and more vulnerable myself. So that feeling gets projected onto the rest of my family because I'm not in control as much as I usually am. Make sense? ...snipsnip... We'll manage fine, my daughter will be fine, my husband will be fine, and it'll all just be fine, right??
Yes, ByGosh it will be fine!! :) And boy do I know what you mean about projecting oneself onto the rest of the family... Poppet you are so right about having, or being made, to take our foot off the accelerator. Poppet , are you getting the hang of the spacer? If you just can't make it work maybe they could let you use a nebulizer?

ByGosh sandpiper re those chipmunk cheeks-- I used ice for several hours after my wisdom teeth (in my 30's)-- 20 min on, 20 min off. I had no swelling whatsoever, and very little soreness. I was very lucky, but I'd recommend ice to anybody who would use it. Do you know, one of my kids doesn't have wisdom teeth at all??

zauberflöte. Yes many people don't have any. I only had two lower ones but they were bony impactions and the roots were wrapped around the nerves in my jaw. I had them removed right in the office and didn't have any major problems. I forgot to mention the icing! Good that you remembered!!

Oh Poppet You offer pearls of wisdom. It's all true and I do understand. I feel like I've been patient, as it's been 5 months now. I did need to slow down in life, and I think I've more like stopped now rather than just slowed down...but if there's nothing that can be down, there's nothing I can do, but continue to rest and ice and wait...

Thank you for being here for us.

sandpiper I don't mind your two cents at all! It's very helpful to me to have your advice, since you were once in the dental field. It sparked me to look it up on line soon, too, as I don't remember much about it with my son. Thank you - I'll be sure not to let her rinse her sockets now! :) (eww-that sounds yuck)

zauberflöte Elosarabrab Thank you both for your vote of confidence. Having wisdom teeth out as an older person is a lot harder I've heard.
I made up some lovely, colorful ice packs today for her with water and alcohol. :) I'm waiting to see how frozen they become, so I can modify the recipe to either harden or soften them - the more water, the harder. They look pretty and I know she'll love them. Oh zauberflöte They're the same colors as the Sleeping Beauty Fairies I mentioned on sandpiper 's thread when you were talking about the "Blubber Fairy" .
Gee, I'm revisiting my childhood, I think!
Okay, I won't hold back - I was out of red food color, so I made blue, yellow, and green! But they're much prettier than that! :)

ByGosh. I have been lurking mostly, cause my thumbs are really aching. Wore braces on both wrists last night-annoying. Just wanted to say I get the guilt and the vulnerability. I always feel like I can put a bubble around everyone I love, and my efforts will protect them. Of course it is an illusion but it let's me sleep nights. Getting sick or hurting makes it so hard to keep the balls in the air.

Take care, and rest. Hopefully you will be on a trajectory of improvement. This phrase always makes me laugh as it is how my son described his his school grades :)

ByGosh How sweet that you made coloured ice packs. You are such a loving Mom. My son had his done recently and his thumbs up and goofy smile as he kept falling sideways reminded me of one of those funny you tube videos taken when kids are coming out of sedation. No problem with his either. A few painkillers and he was good. Yesterday when I was in Target (it just came to Canada) there was a lady there with her friend
buying BOOST. I asked how it tasted and they both said great.....just like chocolate milk. One was getting it because her jaw was wired. Her friend said she'd had it when she had her wisdom teeth out. I bought some for my Mom to try. There was a high calorie and a high protein version.

ByGosh that is tooooo much, colored ice packs, I love it! I never would have thought of that in a million years. Somehow I don't think they'd go over big in this household-- I'm jealous of people who can do stuff like that with/for their kids, as I never have been able to. Boys. Sheesh.:skep: :rotfl:

When my you BIL was living with us, we wanted to show him how to manage the household budget, so we all took a week about buying and cooking the main meal... I came home in dread when it was my BIL (18 years old) turn to a plate full of spinach and blue or red rice and baby cereal for desert.... Ugh!

I often remind him now.. He is married with two wonderful girls, my nieces... zauberflöte

After I had my wisdom teeth out, my grandmother kept showing up with boxes of Popsicles. Like several boxes per day. I couldn't open my mouth that wide, so I was unable to eat them. It was more than my mom's freezer could hold. Fortunately, it was winter, so my mom started tucking them into a snow bank. Then my brothers came home from college and that was the end of the Popsicles.

I've been meaning to tell you that I love your new avatar picture. You're very young-looing.

 thank you ByGosh -- you are so kind. I enjoy seeing the ones you have been using, I love roses. My side board is decorated with roses. I have an ice bucket with glasses and a bell with roses on a serving tray and two vases filled with Wedgewood roses. Every once in a while I will see something in a store and think how nice it would look on the sideboard, but I cant bring myself to pack away the roses.

I had the MRI on Thursday, but will not know anything until Wednesday. The doctor reads MRIs on Tuesday afternoons.

Good thoughts and wishes for you and your daughter.

Hello Everyone LeeApril26 Your poor thumbs, must be OA? Have you tried the Elmore Oil on them? It doesn't do much for my groin pain, but if I massage it on my knees and shoulders, it feels soothing. Then I use Arnicare Gel over that. They're really not that effective, though. Maybe hot water soaks with epsom salts?
My daughters went for a haircut to a beauty academy school, and they offered hot parafin hand treatments. It was lovely - so soothing and it left my hands nice and soft. I bet that would feel good.

Hopefully you will be on a trajectory of improvement.
I like that one, too! Your son was very clever.

Goody2Shoes3 I've seen those funny youtube videos of the kids! They are comical. I'm glad your son's tooth extractions turned out well. Most kids do. We've loaded the house up with the necessary supplies - ice cream, Dove ice cream bars, Fudgicles, sherbert, popsicles, pudding, jello, apple juice, ginger ale, and the fantasty multi-colored ice packs!
We're also making soft foods - mac 'n cheese, mashed potatoes, mashed cauliflower (it's delicious all mashed up like mashed potatoes with butter) a cheese frittata and a quick cheese cake. She's actually looking forward to the ice creams and the foods!

zauberflöte Boys are fun, too, but it is easier to do the cutsie things with the girlie girls. Somehow I don't think my son would have cared if his ice packs were colored like the Sleeping Beauty Fairies! GI Joe green, maybe...

sandpiper I'll try anything to ease the trauma! She likes pretty things, and believe it or not, these actually look cute. Reminds me, I have to make some pink ones today. Gee, maybe I can freeze 1/2 pink, then do blue on top. Two-tone. Then I can try stripe! Ut oh....here I go again..!

Poppet How funny - blue or red rice? Ohhh, that must've looked different. My daughter and her friend made blue mac and cheese once. Very odd looking, but they ate it and loved it. Their lips turned blue, too. Your BIL was either trying to be creative, funny or just didn't have any cooking skills. I'm sure he's improved by now - but I'll bet his children wouln't mind blue rice.

alexthecat Snow bank popsicles! That's a good idea. Why waste them when you can use nature's freezer? I'm sure that your brothers apprecited it!

anniemg Burping, and other ways of creating sounds from the body...the louder the better!

Kylesh I haven't heard of Wedgewood roses....I know Wedgewood china and I have a few pretty pieces. Are they porcelain or china? That's another one I have to look up!
I'm glad the MRI is over - now the wait for the results. That always seems like a long wait to me. And if the doc is busy and the office huge and shared by other docs with lots of office workers, it can be very hard to retrieve the results, I've found. I hope that's not how it is for you. Somehow I get the impression that this doc isn't like that. I hope you get good news, and no extensive treatment is required. Maybe it's quad muscles that need strengthening to take the load off of the knee. Good luck, dear Kylesh !:friends:

ByGosh. Thanks. Yes I think OA, aggravated by too much iPad/iPhone. They call it gamer's thumb. The Elmore Oil soothes it, and I am wearing braces at night. If I don't type too much it is just achy, but if I'm on a lot it really hurts. Oh well. I am going to add rose hips to the turmeric. Just read a study that it helps OA. The parafin treatments sound terrific.
All your wisdom tooth prep is so creative. Soft foods and multicolored ice-neat! I hope it goes easily for your daughter.
