Oh dear octopus I didn't know you had thrombophlebitis! I'm sorry, when did you find this out? How were they able to diagnose it? I assume it's in your op hip calf? It's smart to take the ibuprofen, as you don't want to be in pain and it also may interfere with blood clotting - so it's possibly doing two good things for you.
Two months is a long time, but at least you know what it is and you can control the pain from it. I hope you can still work!
I haven't noticed any more of your incredibly beautiful art work - I imagine that your creations have had to take a back seat a little bit because you're so busy.
It's good of you to keep in touch. Good luck to you and please take care of yourself. I'm thinking of you and thanks so much for your visit. Sending all good wishes and lots of love to you, too! :friends:

My goodness, octopus - I had no idea, either! How far out were you when this started? Poor you!!
ByGosh, I'm wondering how things are today. I worked a looooong morning, came home and had a bite, and then took a nap! I had to get up extra early this morning for work, and I guess I use a lot of extra energy, so.... I feel better now. :)
So... I'm just checking in to see how things are.
Nylsor, I'm so dense; about 4 days ago I realized what your User Name was. :rotfl: Goodness! I love the thought of grilling cheese - I can't imagine! I guess it must be a firm cheese in order to not melt into the grill?!
zauberflöte, Elosarabrab, LeeApril26, and all, This summer we are participating in a program that our neighbors have done for several years; we bought a farm share (or, actually half a share.) We put in money up front, in May, and once a week from June through October we go to this farm about 20 minutes away and pick up a box of whatever they've grown that week. It's really fun; I am learning to cook veggies that I had never heard of before! And I'm sure I'm probably saving money, because I am not needing to buy veggies at the grocery store. Each week we receive an email telling us what will be in our share that week, which helps in meal planning. I'm a "convert"! I love this!:egypdance:
(Here I am having a conversation on your porch again, ByGosh!)

How are you feeling today ByGosh, is there any improvement at all and did I read right, that you can ring up tomorrow for your results? I too will whisper that I hope there is good news!!
@Nylsor has give a very good account of how many in the UK feel about the Royals and I include:)

myself in that, I hated Camilia when Charles first got together with her but I have definitely mellowed about how I now feel! I think that there are a lot that would still happily pass over Charles and have William come to the throne though!! There is no love lost for Andrew and his family and those girls, oh boy, Anne isn't so bad though, I've met her and she was very pleasant. Charles and Anne both live quite close to me, Charles about 20 miles away near Tetbury and Anne nearby at Gatcombe near Avening, I have been to the horse trials that are held on her estate each year, it's a great day out and Henry loves it too!!
They say on the news that a shrine has been set up for the victims of the train crash, the Cathedral at Santiago de Compostela is a beautiful sombre place and I hope that the people find some comfort inside it's walls.

ByGosh. Hi! Just checking in as I am back home. The beach was sunny yesterday and I slathered my newly facialized self with sunscreen. Today was overcast but still beautiful, and I discovered that my friend of 40+ years still has a junk food habit. The beach house was full of chips, ice cream, homemade brownies, candy!!! Lots of wine, too. My daughter and I had brought along berries, plums, apricots, corn and a brown rice casserole-clearly we we not in synch. Needless to say lots of junk was consumed.
The water was very rough so I admired but did not go in.
Nylsor. My daughter is also a vegetarian, and the cheese sounds like a terrific addition to our grilled veggie menu. Thanks.

How are you feeling today ByGosh, is there any improvement
I hate to admit it, but today is not so good, unfortunately. It seems to me that the shots gave temporary relief a couple of mornings, and that's all. Although I am very disappointed, I still hope for some kind of information regarding the CT scan and the fluid culture that will help me figure out what to do next. I may be able to find out tomorrow - if not tomorrow, then Tues.
Thank you for your concern and the hope for good news.

Littlejem The more you post, the more I learn how interesting you are. You live near the royals, you've met The Princess Royal, and you and your handsome Henry (and probably your handsome hubby) have gone to her estate. Plus you've traveled the St. James Way (some) in a cool little sports car where you had the pleasure of staying at the hotel that the Queen and King of Spain were staying. Lovely. I bet it was all fun and great to experience. :)

The Cathedral seems the perfect place for a shrine honoring the dead. I'm sure my son's friend, who's a pilgram on St. Jame's Way, will blog about it on her Facebook, and I'll be reading about it. What a horrific and senseless crash.

Hi LeeApril26 Welcome back - it sounds like you had fun. I'll bet you balanced all of that yummy junk food with your healthy fruits and the casserole. It's good that you brought them, but no harm indulging once in a while.

The cheese does sound delicious! I have never heard nor seen it in the grocery stores here. Have you? It is suppposed to have a nice flavor, it can be made either from cow's milk, goat's or sheep's milk, and the cow's milk tastes mild and somewhat like mozzarella, according to my sources (internet) :). Inet also said that it has a very high melting temperature, and that's why it's great for grilling or putting in other foods. I would love to try it - my daughter's a vegetarian, too, so the more protein the better. Now to just find it... I wonder if Stop & Shop is likely to carry it?

Brown rice casserole - mmmm - is it easy to make? That sounds worthwhile trying.

It's good that you looked at the surf without venturing in. My daughter was going to go kayaking along the shore yesterday, and I was concerned about the currents as she is not an experienced kayaker. She ended up not going, and I was very relieved.

My son's friend blogs a lot about her bites lately.. The first thing that came into my mind was .....I'm sure you can guess....bed bugs. She's traveling along a route full of pilgrims and the closer she gets to the destination, the more people who join the route, I think. Plus she's staying at the least expensive type of hostel (although they're in fancy lodgings, too) in a different bed just about every night. Plus she's blistering from them, which doesn't sound like a mosquito bite to me. But I hope for her sake that I'm wrong.
I just thought I'd throw that out for you. Did you think the same, or is it just me?

Hi Lenora LeeApril26 I just checked, and she's made it to the Cathedral! There's a beautiful picture posted, and the plaza is loaded with people. It's exciting! I can't wait to read her most recent post. She must be ecstatic. 500 miles, I can hardly imagine.

oh ByGosh please don't say bedbugs. I cringe at the thought. When we go to hotels I strip the beds before we get in them, and make m husband keep our suitcases in the bathroom-no bugs on tile, I hope. Poor Audrey. I did not have Internet access at the beach and haven't checked her journey yet today, Yuck!

For the casserole I use either cooked brown rice or quinoa, and add grilled or roasted veggies, some Parmesan cheese, olive oil, often chick peas, and sprinkle chopped parsley, basil, or chopped greens on top. It's pretty good either hot or cold, and I mix and match veggies. I like to add grilled corn kernels if we have fresh corn. I don't feel like and inspired vegetarian cook, but it is a,change from pasta.

Glad your daughter didn't take the kayak out. It was really choppy, even on the bay, and the waves in the ocean were big. My daughter has been kayaking in the East and Hudson rivers this summer. She took lessons but when I think of all the barges and ocean liners I worry. She is 39, however so I say nothing.

I am going to look for the cheese in a Middle Eastern store as soon as I get a chance. I have been overdoing it for the past few days so expect to rest and ice tomorrow, as I am having some discomfort in my outer thigh. Nothing major, I hope.

I'm sorry to read that your brief respite yesterday ended. Let us know what you discover tomorrow. I know the doctor is out of the office but he may review the reports. Hope so.

Just to answer your question from a while back... When I was about 12 I must have read The Prisoner of Zenda about 10 times, and its sequel Rupert of Hentzau 5 times. I absolutely loved them. However, I haven't seen them since, and I think it is quite possible that they would not be such great reading for a modern-day adult. When I was reading them, other than the classics, there really was not much choice of fiction suitable for that age group. Nowadays there is no end of choice, but whether it is suitable is another matter.

I'm glad Littlejem has come out with a nice, clear description of Prince Andrew and Co. My thoughts exactly!

I don't want to out-royal Littlejem, but, through circumstance, my husband Graham is friendly with someone who is in line to the throne. Graham has no interest in the royals whatsoever. A few years ago he went out for a meal with this person and some other friends. It was a time when all the newspapers were full of a particular scandal, which seemed as though it might involve the royal family. When he came home I asked if he had had a good time, and he said: No, not really. I was a bit bored. All they did all night was talk about "the scandal".

Wow! I was about to find out the whole unexpurgated inside story... "What did they say?!" "Oh, I don't know," says Graham, "I wasn't really listening."

On to more important things, and I hope you do not have to wait much longer for the results of your tests. It is tempting to say I hope they are good, but obviously if they did show something amiss you would know what you are up against at last.

And finally, for some arcane and Ruritanian reason, Princess Anne is correctly referred to as The Princess Royal. You have to put in a "The". Don't ask me why.

ByGosh Songlady
I've had the thrombophlebitis for about a month now. I am going to start taking the ibuprofen three times a day I think. I'll be worried about the clot until this thing disappears. I have another scan in about a couple of weeks. Yes, it's my hip calf. They are unsure why I've got it because the usual period for this to develop after surgery is three months, and I was four. It started with soreness and then the skin became red and the calf was quite painful. It's good to know that the ibuprofen prevents clots, I thought it might, but was unsure.

I've been doing some art but don't want it to be just me posting all the time. But just for you... [Bonesmart.org] ByGosh ByGolly ByLateral

So sorry that you're no better today ByGosh . I hope you get some answers tomorrow.

Ps, I was in 5.9 and 5.7 earthquakes and lots of smaller ones when I went away about a week ago! The city has since had a much bigger 6.5. No loss of life, very few injuries, thankfully.

I don't want to out-royal Littlejem,
ha, you may out royal me anytime, I loved the story, so they are quite boring really and like a good scandal like the rest of us eh!! :)
My youngest daughter is also vegetarian and often uses haloumi in her recipes, she also uses paneer, have you tried that, it makes a great curry!!
Things are certainly not moving in the right direction for you are they ByGosh, I'm sure you just need to know now, what's happening and why things aren't as they should be!! Fingers are still crossed for a positive diagnoses on your scan and culture!! Take care my friend xx

The Princess Royal
Because 'the' when used before a name is a definite article. And she's the only one bearing this title. I was an English teacher - this is another reason why I know a lot about the Royals - foreign students are fascinated by them and want to know every little detail of their lives. I used to prepare worksheets which taught them English and also about the Royals. But there are plenty of folk in this country who really are not interested in the Royal family. My son-in-law for one. He thinks they are totally irrelevant particularly the 'lesser' royals.
I said the Halloumi cheese was Greek. In fact, it is Cypriot and originated on the island of Cyprus. I love Cyprus but don't go there in August like we did - you'll fry! We first visited there 20 years ago and the temps reached 120F + - I never used a drop of hot water in two weeks. Mike had to lay in a bath of cold water every day just to cool off. And all along the edge of the sea were a row of sandals, flip-flops, etc which you had to wear to cross the beach to get to the sea because you could have fried eggs on the sand. I digress. Back to the halloumi. The skewers were a great success at lunch. On Saturday evening, I cut up red and orange peppers ( I think you call them bell peppers or capsicums), halloumi, red onions, yellow and green courgettes ( you call them zucchini) and small red tomatoes. I placed them all in a bowl with four cloves of chopped garlic and splashed them with balsamic vinegar. I covered the bowl with Saran/plastic wrap/ cling-film and put it in the fridge overnight to marinate. Skewered them the next morning and grilled them. Keep an eye on them as the cheese browns quickly. When cooked, the cheese is soft and squidgy and delicious! Have a look on the BBC food site on the internet. You'll find lots of lovely halloumi recipes.
Oh poor ByGosh. I really do hope that you get some answers this week. Did the OS tell you to go back if the shots didn't work? I'm very stiff today and feel a bit cranky, most probably because I did quite a lot over the weekend. But I'm over 5 months now and still have to resort to painkillers now and again. Those who think you leap around like a spring lamb after a THR are so very wrong. I'm so disappointed for you - I can't even imagine what it must be like for you day after awful day. Anyway, I'm supposed to be cheering you up, not moaning about myself. So I'll tell you a true, but funny story from when I was Head of School at a large, inner-city London College. All the students in my ''school' were foreign - they came from all over the world. All were non-English speaking. In order to teach conversational English, language teachers frequently use pics / photographs. It was the 1990's and Margaret Thatcher was our Prime Minister. I held up a picture of her. 'Who is this?' I asked. 'The Queen' came the universal reply. Says it all.
Loving thoughts:flwrysmile:   Ros xx

Nylsor not only our good friends across the pond like your stories I do too!! I love the recipe and will try and remember it for next time my youngest is around for a BBQ. I love the Mrs Thatcher being Queen story, priceless!! Take care and keep them coming x

Hi ByGosh - Good luck with what you find out today! And Zauberfl. asked me to extend her good wishes also - she is not able to log onto the forum to do so herself! (So my next step is to go to the tech page on her behalf.)

Nylsor, so what about "The" before "Reverend?" I m told that the correct way to write to a priest/pastor is "The Rev. Mr./Ms. Chantsalot." I find all the Royals and language discussions fascinating!

Mmm... I'm not sure that it is Songlady. I've just looked at the British Council site re the use of the definite article with names / titles to make sure of my knowledge as it is some time since I had to address English grammar in such detail. A bit like teaching advanced students! You would most definitely say 'the President of the United States', or 'The Pope' or The Queen of the United Kingdom' because there is only one of them. In the same way as you would say HRH The Prince of Wales because he is the only holder of that title. Or HRH The Duke of Cambridge because there is only one holder of that title too. You would not say, The Prince Henry or The Prince George because we have a lot of holders of the title 'Prince' (too many). If I was going to write to our priest I would address the envelope, Reverend so-and-so I wouldn't precede his name with 'The'. But English is a very strange language and there are exceptions to many rules and the use of 'The' before Reverend may be one of them. Sorry not to be more helpful  Ros x

Thanks Nylsor, now I know what a courgette is! I had long wondered, but never looked it up. Thanks for the skewer suggestion also, it sounds really good and my vegetarian daughter might enjoy it. Will have to hunt for the cheese.
ByGosh I hope tomorrow brings you some answers.

ByGosh Being new here and not having had a THR yet I always hesitate to add my two cents about any medical hip issues. However, I was wondering if massage or physio would be worth considering? The reason I say that is because when i was going to physio myself it brought a lot of changes ( expensive though so i had to stop). I can get such bad thigh cramps...they are agonizing. Then it will be groin or a muscle spasm above my buttocks closer to my waist. Sometimes I can't tell if it is a muscle spasm or just extreme tightness that is causing so much pain. Everything gets so off kilter and affects every other part in some kind of chain reaction. With the deep tissue massage this past Spring the PT started with only my back for the first few sessions and it seemed as he went on he was able to unlock all the interdependent muscles and relax them. Many days I walked out of there with no groin pain whatsoever whereas i was limping when i first got there. I am fully expecting that after surgery i may still have similar reactions as muscles can get into a "pattern" of responding.

I guess you have to know what you are dealing with first before you treat and I hope the culture and scan provide you with more info tomorrow.

octopus I really like the art work that you posted for me to see. :) It is really unique, and interesting with the tall buildings and the clock! Is it a city we would know, like London and Big Ben, or is it a city you made? If you sold your art work, I would definately buy some for my house, I like them so much. You're very creative and I'm glad you're still making pieces.
If your OS said it's ok to take ibuprofen, you may as well to help with your pain. Do you have to wear support stockings, too? Is there anything else you need to do?
Oh dear, octopus Earthquakes?! Have you experienced them before? We had one last summer - it was in the 5 range, and I don't believe there's been an earthquake here on the East Coast before - well, not that I know of. I was in the dentist's waiting room and things began to tremble. At first I thought it was the little boy two seats over jiggling the chairs - I was reading a magazine and not really paying attention. It kept up, and just when I felt like I was becoming aggravated with him and wanted to have him stop it, the trembling stopped. In a minute of two the desk girls came out and told me it was an earthquake! I couldn't believe it! It was very mild, comparatively, but a very strange feeling. So I can imagine what you felt, as I believe yours were stronger. It's a relief there were no casualties from those two and the next one. And of course, I'm so glad you weren't in danger! :)
