TKR Brownie's Good, Bad, & Uglies

Well finally located my thread. haha it was several pages back. My cough is still hanging on. I take my last antibiotic today so that makes this the 10th day, but I had been fighting the virus for the prior week before it hit me. Doc said it was a sinus infection and ears too. But my son thinks I got the flu on top of it. Ended up with back ache,everything ache. I still feel tired.
Wrist...lots better but sometimes feel an aching and hope this isn't going to be added on to the list of painful joints. See the hand dr on Wednesday. He will inject me other trigger finger. My thumbs are permanently stuck, don't bend at all due to arthritis. I am going to ask him if anything can be done about that. Although, I will not be having any surgery!
So as far as the knees. My TKR knee is achey but I'm sure this is just normal. It can be aching but if I get on the treadmill, it starts to feel better being warmed up. But my left knee has been very painful. Hurts so much just to stand up on it. And walking is awful. It hurts all around, and even behind the knee, feels like it was beaten with a bat. I know you all know just exactly what I am talking about! My plan was to have surgery in June when school is out and recover this summer. But I really hate to wait that long. I have private disability for this. I just hate to be off work for so long again. I really do enjoy my work. I will just play it by ear. The synvisc hasn't done anything for me, if anything I hurt more now. I am not sure if it is supposed to help right away or does it take a few weeks? It will be 3 weeks on Monday since I had it. The cortisone of course helped immediately but only lasted 10 days.
So that's my update/story. I am so thankful I have this and not something that can't be fixed.
 
Marianne, I am sure that something could be done for your thumbs, but it would take some surgery. My big toes didn't bend because of arthritis and had surgery on them and now they bend. Use to be anyone would bump into my big toes and I would scream they hurt so much. I know you are tired of surgery, but I bet you would like your thumbs to bend again.
 
I'm pretty sure the synvisc takes a few weeks for you to notice. I hope it buys you some time.
 
Marianne - you've been through it with the illnesses. Nurse, cure thyself!! lol Would that it were so easy. So very sorry you are ailing. It would seem some "simpl" arthroscopy could clean out the debris in the thumbs. Debbie - so sorry about your big toes - what a pain (no pun intended!).
 
A tiny little arthroscopy for my thumbs? Hmm..I had a doctor that tried to give me a cortisone injection and he could not get the needle into the joint...and it smarted!
 
Awe Marianne, I'll bet that smarted! :console2: I can almost feel it in all the way here in Connecticut, when I read your post it made me cringe! :scary: Are you going to have the arthroscopic done? It's got to be awfully painful not to be able to bend them.
 
My thumbs ache some of the time but not being able to bend them is annoying butnot a huge deal compared to the knee problem! I see hand guy tomorrow and will see what's available for my thumbs!
 
Marianne, I have had a few injections into the thumbs and yes it has to be placed in just the right spot. Wish the injection lasted longer, mine seem to last a month or two and right now they have worn out already. My doc has talked about surgery or joint replacement, but to me it isn't bad enough to do it yet. Not sure how bad it has to be. Do you have braces for them? I got my from occupational therapy. If I know I am driving for a long way, or working in the office or something that requires my hands alot, I will wear them. Good luck tomorrow.
 
No I have never had a brace for them. They are just stuck in a normal anatomical position. I'm looking more closely at them and my right one actually has a slight movement in the joint but the left one doesn't move at all. Sometimes they really ache but with arthritis there is always some aching. I think we have all gotten used to constant pain! That stuff seems so minor compared to our knees! But I am still going to see what can be done since I've never seen a hand doctor until I broke my wrist.
So many teachers, staff and kids are down with the flu. One boy told me, "its an AMerican epidemic!" Cute.
 
Hugs Brownie!! This getting older stuff sucks, doesn't it? After I had my tkr done, it seemed as if all my other joints improved some. I had just gotten diagnosed with plantar fasciitis right before my tkr, as well as a frozen shoulder. They were fine after the tkr, but as time has passed, now they are back reminding me they are there. And I have some new hip pain (very nerve like). I do suffer with chronic pain, and am still on pain meds daily for those.

I did have my other knee injected with cortisone at my 6 week visit and it is still doing pretty good and its already been 3 months. It was really complaining alot after the tkr. I think I may get away without needing the right one done at least for now. It does not like the cold, but other than that its doing well.

As for your cold, we got ours at the same time. Lucky for me, mine was just a cold and after a week I was doing better. I still have a bit of a cough though. I hope things quiet down for you soon. Hugs!
 
I think all our "other" joints that had problems before our replacements calmed down after our replacements because of the pain killers we were on. They liked them too and now that we are off the powerful stuff they are letting us know they are still around and want attention too. I don't think I will ever get off my Tylenol and Tramadol though. I know Dave's surgeon wants him off the Tramadol too, but my arthritis doc sees no problem with me being on it.
 
Thats very true Debbie. Im still on painkillers at night but trying to stay off them during the day. Now Im getting about a little more I dont really notice the need for them during the day. When I come off them completely my right knee might start complaining again. Hi Marianne. Sorry youre having trouble with your thumbs. These things are sent to try us arent they. And I personally think we have all been well and truly tried enough for the moment thank you very much.:tada:
 
Well! Dr told me I had congenital trigger thumbs! He said I never did have much bend in my thumbs. Well one thumb has a tiny bit of bend now and the other doesn't bend at all. Both are swollen and one twists a bit. I am not sure he knows much about arthritis. I sure can't remember how much my thumbs used to bend. The arthritis in my hands I've had so long. By age 40 I had the herber something nodules on last joint of fingers.
I will ask my rheumy about it when I see her. So he injected my other trigger finger for me. My wrist is fine so I am done with him! I couldn't believe the congenital thing. ha!
It rained hard this am. Nice because we sure need it. so much smog yesterday so mountains will look clean again.
How's everyone else doing???
 
Marianne, I have those nodules on the first joints of the index finger and middle finger on both hands. My 16 year old grandson looked at my in horror a short while back and exclaimed "Grandma your fingers are broken!" and then he said "Awe man, gram I have your genes", "I have your blue eyes, he's the only one who does, and I have your arthritis gene, I know cause I can feel it in my body already!" I said, can I appologize now!, he just gave me a hug!:)

Here in Connecticut we have temps of below zero, with the wind chill factor! Brrrrrr!
