PKR Bj Mac's Recovery

Well, BJ, I went to PT today (after 4 months away) and the therapist thought I was doing just fine even though my ROM was 113. Are you kidding? It was 120 when I left PT four months ago. Okay. I am going to get that back and hopefully go farther. She was also dismissive of surgery for adhesions if I have them, and of lymphatic massage, but said she'd be happy to work with me to strengthen my hip and knee. I am discouraged, but actually determined that I will do this anyway. Actually, my being so angry may be the motivating factor. And...how are you?

Hope you are doing ok after that fall BJ. Shame on that guy for not coming to your aid. :hairpulling:

Thanks for asking. I am doing OK after my fall. Although today with all of the humidity it suddenly started to hurt worse...

BJ, How are you today? I hope the fall didn't set you back too far. I am scared to death of falling. When kids would come tearing out of their classrooms, I'd hold my arm out straight and yell, "Stop!" Do you think you should see the surgeon to check it out?

I've been doing work at school, a bit each day, turning the millions of files I have--poems, writing examples, book lists and annotations--into digital files. It involves a lot of standing, so I do it a bit at a time. Standing is still a problem for me.

It turns out my husband has a job interview on Tuesday, so he can't go to the Berkshires with me. I'm trying to decide--do I really want to drive myself that distance...it supposedly takes 4 1/2 hours, but I think it will be more like six. I can leave early and stop often. Just not sure. And I totally get that he wants to do this interview.

Feel well, everyone. BJ, ice and rest that knee.

I think that I will be ok. I am not having any abnormal, weird pains. I will go to the Chiropractor again on Tuesday.

Good to hear that you feel you will be okay with everything since the fall. You' ve been mighty quiet, and I've wondered about you. Take care.

BJ,

Wow, so glad your fall didn't mess anything up. It is so frustrating to have limited abilities when we had our surgeries for the very reason we wanted more ability. This long recovery period and pain is beyond anything I have ever faced or anticipated. I was looking on the site again this morning about pain. It is still hard for me to believe that I still have pain @ 12 weeks post op and that his is normal.
(Pre-op I was blissfully expecting a week our two of horrible pain but imagined I would be near 100% in 6 weeks...sometime ignorance is just DUMB.)

I gave in and bought a walking cane yesterday to help with my walking speed and give me a little more support. I hated to do it because it makes me look crippled in my eyes but apparently I look crippled anyway. I went back to work on Monday, walked the halls and too and from the parking lot. I got asked by strangers every day if I was ok and had to explain that I just had knee surgery. Embarrassing and frustrating as it may be perhaps a cane might help prevent further falls till your knee gets stronger.

I hope that once you get your kids back off to college you can take some time back for yourself and let the dust bunnies hide where they may.

Chris

^good point about the cane, Chris. My doc didn't rush me off the cane b/c he wanted me to be stable, esp. when walking outside or any distance.

Bj, sorry about the fall!! I wonder if your quad is still really weak? I fell yesterday--was up on the mountain picking huckleberries, came to a tree that was blocking the trail and without thinking, I jumped over it and landed on my left leg--opps!! I went down and fell right on my huckleberries!!!!! Now, I have everything ready for a pie including my formerly white shirt! it looks like a rorshach test!

My right quad is very delineated. My left quad looks like a wrinkled bag that used to have a muscle in it. Be careful, slowly is my new mantra--no more jumping over trees!!! Kelly

I thought I was alone in the pre-op belief .... it has been tough I think because I could never have imagined it would take this long!

I know that I also went into the tkr thinking that I heal fast and that I, unlike everyone else in the world, would just walk through all of this at a fast clip. well, a few years later, I feel a little more humble!! It is a long recovery--no matter how fit or how young you are when you go into it. Time heals---unfortunately a lot of time~!! Kel

Yes, get a cane when you are out. I've been using a cane for about a half a year now. It does help when I'm out but not so much in the house. When I'm out people are very respectful of the can usually. There are always a couple now and then that just bulldoze by me though. I like that Mom's always tell their kids to watch out for the cane, and I always say thanks.

Chris, I had no idea what I was in for either as far as pain and recovery. I am still swelling and in pain and very limited in what I can do. I am soooo tired of this. I have a cane, but have been walking just fine... I am not sure what happened. I am thinking that I perhaps didn't lift my right leg high enough and just tripped on the curb. ( I would love to see the instant replay, but I don't think there is one... lol)

Kelly, yes, my quad is still weak. I do not think that it gave out, but I am not sure. It was weird because I suddenly found myself on the concrete. I was glad that I landed on the side of my left calf rather than my knee, but my right knee felt as if it bent way too far which was odd as I have such good ROM.

I hope that you are OK. Did you get to bake a pie after all? That stinks about your white shirt.

I dyed the shirt a lovely shade of huckleberry blue--so now, I have another new shirt!! Since I paint every day most of my clothing has paint on it somewhere. i dye a lot of stuff black!!! Kelly

no, I give them three weeks at most. white shirts are always gifts!! I never buy one. K

BJ and Kelly, you two are my heroes. Both of you have had falls and you never once drop your sense of humor, (or is that senses of humor?)

"A wrinkled bag"...hmm, Kelly, that sounds like a familiar image. My thigh looks the same. You both seem to have pretty intense exercise routines, probably because you are both skiers, yes? I'd like to get back to hiking, canoeing and swimming, and if I could ride a bicycle in Valley Green...a beautiful bridle trail that goes from the suburbs all the way into Philadelphia...that would be great. I've never skied, mostly because my knees began to dislocate when I was twelve. But after I met my husband I began to do mountain hiking and actually got fairly strong. Our time together in the mountains has been some of the best time I've spent in my life.

Here's to happy feet and steady legs.

BJ, I hope things are getting better for you! How can you host our skiing trip, if you are down! You must take care of yourself and get some rest after the boys leave, because it won't be long before "the girls bombard" the ski lodge! :happydance:

And here I was all set to think "falling on your huckleberries" was a colorful western expression for falling on your... :heehee:
