TKR AG TKR new knee

The good thing about working from home is you don't have to prepare (lunch or dressing up) as much or travel. I'm not surprised you still need a nap, I felt that energy drain into month 4. Knees are always stiff in the morning, but I'm glad your ROM is getting there through the day. Good for you!

Today was first day in the office. Went for five and a half hours, then off to PT. Exhausted. Glad I can work st home the rest of the week. ROM is 106 to 110 on a regular basis, but mornings are still more limited. Strength is improving, and balance is good. Range is my limiting factor. But swelling does seem to be my enemy. Have travel coming up the next two weeks, any advice?

If you're going into work that's really all the PT you need. Travel as in a car or a plane?

Plane for three hours. Second time is plane two hours. Hotel stay and no iceman so not my normal schedule and probably more time moving around. Will be an attempt of being normal but not convinced I will handle it well and not be very swollen and in pain.

You can always use a transport at the airport to cut down on activity if the knee is screaming at you. Pumpkln's idea is great because I've just taken baggies with me to hold ice from the hotel.

This article may help with the plane travel:
Flying soon after surgery
Remember to arrive early at the airports, in case screening takes longer than usual.

Do you have any gel packs that you could take and put in the hotel fridge? even if they won't freeze, at least they will be able to cool your knee a bit at th end of the day. You'd have to pack them in your checked luggage - gel not allowed in carry-on.

Thanks have one that I took to the office the other day. Going to have to find balance and ensure I use it enough and elevate.

@agarrett I traveled recently and used the wheelchair service from the airline. It helped a lot since I didn't have to be on my feet the whole time and it helped control the swelling from activity. I also used one of the old fashioned ice bags and had one of the restaurants fill it up with ice for me once I was through security. I also made sure to choose a seat with more leg room to be more comfortable. Best of luck and safe travels!

Made it ok on the plane. Iced before landing and had bulk head so was easier to elevate. Upcoming OS visit next Monday more discussion on MUA. I wake up around 95 degrees, warm up with effort to 100, slowly get to 110, but then pretty much peak out at that point. Made it to 114 once but not repeated. Wondering what my limitation is and why each day is an effort to get ROM. If I don't work at it each day then I would stay closer to just under 100 probably. Ready for more bend soon!

Finished my OS appointment at 14 week. Which I was scheduled for a follow up in three months. My ROM is still a work in progress although my surgeon seemed happy with the ROM even if I am not. I have been able to get between 100 and 115 this last week but it takes effort daily to get there. Only 90 to 100 degrees seems to come naturally. He said the scar tissue near the knee cap is causing the problems. He said keep stretching but is there anything else I can do? I still ice daily as the swelling has been severe the last few days as I try Normal work environment.

Has anyone suggested biking? I found pedaling a recumbent bike helped to loosen my knee. At first I could only rock back and forth, but after a week or so I was able to get a full rotation. After a full rotation keep to just 5 minutes at a 0 resistance and after a few weeks you can add 5 more minutes.

@KarriB yes I ride the bike every day. Some days I am stiff and have to back the seat up until it loosens up, then eventually get it closer. I do somewhere between 30 minutes and 60 minutes daily over a few times. Unfortunately my hotel this week doesn't have a bike so haven't had a good option. It usually gets me to at least 100 at least if not 105 to 110 rom.

If you're still swelling I don't think it's a good idea to bike for so long. Your leg may be swelling because of the length you're pedaling. Some people just swell more than others, when that's the case you need to ease into things and 30-60 minutes at 4 months is probably too much for your knee.

Does your hotel have a hot tub? I found that sitting in hot water and sliding my knee towards my butt helped tremendously to loosen my knee up and increase my ROM. Actually, I agree with your OS. You are doing very well for just 3 months out. Swelling is keeping your knee from bending more. Be sure and ice and elevate as much as you can. Being back working is putting your baby knee through stresses it's not happy with right now. Give her time. She'll adjust. Just remember that she's still a baby.

And since you're traveling AND working you really don't need to be biking for an hour or doing much else. Working is all you the therapy you need and just pedaling for 5-10 minutes to loosen your knee is sufficient.

I tried the hot tub earlier and it swelled really bad so nervous about trying it again. But it has been a while. I might try it this next week. Back at home means I can get back on schedule and see if we can get the rom where it was or move it forward. This past week it got hot again every day so I know work was a toll on it. Didn't really do any PT for the week. But hey the walking seems to be better most days.

Working and walking is your PT!

WE had someone else on here who found that her knee also swelled badly after using a hot tub. It's probably still too early for your knee to use one.

Have you tried letting hot water run on your knee while you're having a shower? I know one of our members found that helped to loosen up his knee.

Hi @agarrett I will be 4 months out next week and ROM is still work in progress. It has gotten better even if slowly. My surgeon was right, time will get me my ROM back. I don't do any specific exercises, just daily living. I notice improvement in everyday things, it bends further than it did a month ago and I no longer ice or elevate. Moral of the story is, don't worry too much, the bend will come, just give it time. Good luck!
