THR 1st April Surgery and doing well

Very witty Alex! i love it! I once had a person at work tell me it was good that I was getting my knees replaced now instead waiting until I was older. Her grandmother had had her knee replaced and it was very hard on her because she was older!?!?!?!?

I've had people ask me why I am having my knees replaced and I was like, uh.... because I can't walk? And, its better then being in a wheelchair?

Well, you did send in the little form to get 50% off your second knee, right? They're buy one, get one half off, I think. :wink1:

These days, no one knows I have an artificial hip unless I tell them, so I'm spared a lot of those comments. Once in a while, I do get someone telling me that I'll be dealing with that for the rest of my life. Really? I was waiting for the top of my femur to grow back any day now.

Oh... and when I had my one-year check-up with the OS, the receptionist said, "aren't you a little young for hip replacement?" I did this :sigh: and this :rolleyespink: and said, "yeah... I get that a lot." Then I asked her if she thought that was a smart thing to say to me and she did this:

Four joint replacements in 38 months and the only discount I got was a few free appointments! I got a lot of the aren't you too young question a lot too....like I really wanted to replace all my joints before I hit 50!

People can be really thoughtless, can't they??!! The weirdest comment I got (in my opinion) was when I was walking into the operating room for the first surgery, a nurse on either side helping me because I was in such pain and limping so badly. One of the nurses turns to me and asks, "Do you always walk like this?" Well, duh, why else would I be getting a hip replaced??!!??

Coming from an orthopedic surgical nurse, that seemed like a really stupid thing to say. But friends and family often comment out of ignorance; sometimes the comments hurt, sometimes I just shake my head and roll my eyes. I guess it's all an example of how we humans can have such a difficult time "walking a mile in another's shoes."

(Oh, and at 58, I've still gotten a lot of the "aren't you too young?" comments!)

Joan this is SO true and it's exactlly the reason I searched and (luckily) found BoneSmart. Friends and family mean well but they just don't understand! Comments about limping or still using walking aides are so hurtfull when we are spending every waking hour trying to recover.

Thank God for BoneSmart buddies!

I get the "aren't you too young" question a lot. My response is " I am too young not to be able to walk." I had to stop eating lunch with friends at work because I used up too much of their breaks walking to and from the break room. At least the people who say dumb things are taking a interest. I personally like the people who rush to get a head of me when going into a store or the ones that allow doors to close on me or watch me struggle as I try to go through. Frustrating for sure. On the other hand, some people are so kind and caring that it makes up for the idiots!
Limpy People Unite! :loll:

I know it's crazy what some people say :rolleyespink:

Unfortunately, some of them are difficult to ignore, but you have to move on, which can be difficult at times.

I have to say that some of your retorts did put a smile on my face :th_heehee:

But like Jaycey said, that's why we have this family :yes 4:

Some of the things people have said to me about my hip surgery are truly ridiculous! :rolleyespink: One week after surgery, I had a friend ask me if I was "still" using pain meds...and why. Last week, just 3 weeks post-op, I had a friend ask me, incredulously, "What do you DO all day?" Another friend tried to talk me into buying a nice hand-made, hand-painted cane, since I'd "need to use one for a long time." I tried to explain the point of the surgery to her, but I realized she didn't get it when she advised me to "buy one of those scooters" last week.

I, too, have gotten the "aren't you too young?" comment from MANY people. I even had one woman tell me there was NO WAY I'd ever find a reputable surgeon that would operate on me before I turned "at least 60."

It feels good to have a place to go where people really understand!

AnnaRose, I've gotten that too about the cane! I am more than a year post-THR and have no limp at all, but there are a few people who have tried to tell me that you have to use a cane forever after THR. I have one relative who keeps mailing me information about motorized scooters and I keep dropping hints that, since my THR, I've been backpacking in Yellowstone and competed in bicycle races. I don't think I need a cane!

You reminded me of something else that happened after one of my surgeries (not THR). My mom likes to go to yard sales and she kept coming home with all these raised toilet seats and shower benches. I only have one bathroom, so I didn't need more than one of each, but she filled one of my guest bedrooms with more than a dozen toilet seats and 5 or 6 shower benches. I couldn't even get into that room on crutches, nevermind in the wheelchair I was using at the time.

I don't know what she thought I was going to do with all of those. I ended up donating them to a local church that lends out medical equipment to people who can't afford to buy they own... or more likely can find them at yard sales because my mother bought them all!

:loll:Honestly, if we didn't keep a sense of humor through all of this, where would we be :rolleyespink: ?

After my friend asked me why I was still taking pain meds a week after surgery, I explained by showing him a video of a hip replacement on you tube. It had the most amazing effect on him -- he was a changed man in less than a minute of viewing! :th_heehee:

Oh man - I just couldn't watch! I'll bet he was :hate-shocked:!

I would have loved my surgery being filmed as I would want to watch it.

I've watched other youtube videos but its not the same as it's not ME!!:th_heehee:

Had physio yesterday and now I'm complaining about an ache in my right buttock ( gluteal muscles).

Have been putting heat there but when I think it's better I suddenly feel it mainly when I other stand up or go to sit down. :sigh:

Hope it gets better over time :prayer1:

Don't worry Jyoti - it will get better. Just muscles complaining at having to work after being stressed during your op. Try ice if heat doesn't help. Hope you feel better!

Alex, that's hilarious about your mom!!

AnnaRose, what a great idea to show that "discounter" the surgery video; I'm going to keep that in mind for when I might next need it!

Joan

I have to agree. We have to acknowledge these ridiculous comments with humour. During the past few years I've heard things like"you can't be so bad, or they would operate", or 'people your age don't have symptoms like that, wait til you get older' and 'have you looked at a scooter?' Even my GP said to me 'your xrays are fine, take tylenol arthritis. We talk about replacement when you turn 60' and so on. And best of all (sadly) was my surgeon asking me why I waited so long to come. Go figure.

Thanks heavens for humor and Bonesmart! Yup, people can be so amazingly thoughtless. I've been sober for 25 years, and the comments I got about taking pain meds from some folks were just mean-spirited, even though they might have been well-intended. It's hard enough being patient with myself without other folks being impatient for me.:hissyfit:

It seems as though everyone I know knows someone who has had a THR, and many of them have opinions about how I'm supposed to be doing, what exercises, using a cane or not, meds or not, yamma, yamma, yamma. I am so glad to have this forum where folks understand!:thumb:

Patience, patience, patience; at least 17 giggles every day; exercise; ice; Bonesmart wisdom. That's what recovery is all about.

Oh that old "mother's cousin's friend's next-door-neighbour" thing! And often, I would suggest, non-existent!
