@forestje: when I was at the rehab facility they were using ankle weights on me for some of my exercises. When I checked with them about wearing them at home, during the day, they said that would be fine. And they are only 2 1/2 lbs, which is hardly anything, to me, anyway. But, I am learning, through my home care providers, that the rehab facility PT's need a little more training and education for hip replacement patients. With that said though, I'm tend to be a bit of an overachiever and now I have to learn the hard lesson of backing off a bit. In this case, less is better. I haven't done anything today except for walking around the house and making my bed and I already feel much better.

@Nana757 sounds like a good plan, as per Josephine's regular point - hips heal well by themselves if we only let them. I've almost settled into a rhythm of working things when I feel good and backing right off & snoozing at the slightest hint of overdoing it. Have fun pottering around and enjoy putting your feet up when you can.

Have a great recovery day

@Nana757
Are you doing as well at home, or was recovering easier at rehab? I'm debating whether to schedule rehab after my surgery (if I have a choice). When my aunt went to rehab she only had three facilities to chose from and two of them were regular convalescent homes (the good one was full, so she ended up in one of the convalescent homes :yikes:). Hope you're recovery is still going well. Hugs!!

Good morning @Cynthia777
Yes, if I had it to do all over again, I would certainly choose rehab facility again. Even though it had its ups and downs, it took the pressure off both me and my DH, knowing that I was under medical care 24/7. The only down side, is that they don't allow you to set on your laurels and you are at their mercy...I mean schedule...
I was fortunate enough to have Medicare, which paid 100%, but the caveat is you must stay in the hospital for 3 mid nights...which I'm sure your OS can work with. I would certainly research what is available and chose one that is more of a rehab facility than a convalescent home. Don't know how your insurance coverage would play into this, though.

I am doing fine at home...better than I was before surgery...back to cooking dinners, etc. DH is off at a golf tourney this morning so I am perched in my throne...I mean bed, just relaxing with my coffee, iPad and the golf channel. 3 of my favorite things!
Had to double up on my Coumadin last night, because the Dr was not happy with my 1.3 clotting level. Hopefully, that did the trick, but won't know until Monday when it's tested again. My pain is at a minimum today...just a little burning at the incision site and deep in my bottom, which I am assuming is quite normal.

The only thing that is weird is that I cannot sleep with anything (not even a sheet) on my op side foot. If I do, it aches like the dickens in the morning and just feels odd. Maybe @Josephine or @Jaycey has some insight for me.

I have only been taking my Percocet once in mid-morning and just before bed, which has kept the pain at bay. If I need to I do take one mid-afternoon, but that is rare. Was walking around the house cane-free yesterday, but I know I still have a while before I ditch it entirely. With the cane, very little and sometimes no limp. Yippee!
I hope you are doing well today. Won't be too much longer for you, my friend.

Well, I'm going to ask you some questions and it would be very helpful if you would answer each one individually - numbered as I have done - in as much detail as you can then I'll come back as see where you are ....

1. what are your pain levels right now? (remember the 1-10 scale: 1 = no pain and 10 = the worst you can imagine. And don't compare this with the bone-on-bone pain you had before surgery!
[Bonesmart.org] YAHOO!  I made it!
)
Also don't forget to include other forms of pain such as soreness, burning, stabbing, throbbing, aching, swelling and stiffness

2. what pain medications have you been prescribed, how much are you taking (in mg please) and how often?

3. how often are you icing your knee and for how long?

4. are you elevating your leg, how often and for how long?

5. What is your ROM - that's flexion (bend) and extension (straightness)

6. what is your activity level? What do you do in the way of housework, cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc., and

7. what kind of PT exercises and exercises at home are you doing? How much and how often?

Can you detail it like this

Exercises done at home: 3 sessions a day
Heel slides x10 (reps)
Strait leg raises x10
Steps x10

At PT
Squats x5 (reps) x2 (sets)
Wall slides x5 x2
Clamshells X5 x2

@Nana757
Good report! Speaking of golf, I'm just getting ready to record it (I always watch the final day, with hopes that my DG (Darling Golfer), Phil Mickelson, will be in the running. :)

As far as the rehab goes, do you think you would have done as well as you have if you bypassed the rehab and went directly home? I'm not sure what my insurance requirements are as far as rehab, but I do have the best Blue Shield PPO policy available. I'll have to call and find out. I much prefer to head directly to my woman cave I've so lovingly set up, but one must be prepared for plans to go awry.

It's comforting to know that clotting levels are monitored after surgery. I did have my levels checked recently and the results were good (not sure if surgery can alter the levels). I've read several threads where members have problems with the foot issue (I think it's been their heels, but I'm not certain). The advice has been to roll up a towel for example and rest the lower part of the leg on it, thus elevating the heel off the bed. Hopefully one of the moderators will address this issue.

Your low pain levels have been quite remarkable! Do you ice and elevate frequently?
No limp....YES! I can't wait (lying...I really can wait, but won't unless some miraculous healing takes place)!!!!

@Josephine
Thank you for replying and I will do my best to be as detailed as possible, for you.

1) my pain level, most of the time, hovers around a 2 or less. It is more like discomfort and annoyance, rather than true pain. Just a burning sensation in the incision area and deep in the buttock and occasionally below the buttock and/or thigh muscle. My knee has been the source of most of my discomfort, but even that has been subsiding lately...it killed me before surgery, but now is so much better. I would say my pain has never been above 5 or 6 and that is very rare. I am stiff when I first get up in am or have been sitting for a while. That eases up as soon as I start walking around the house. No throbbing, to speak of, and no stabbing pain. I swell when standing or sitting for prolonged period, but not much...just from knee down to ankle. That's when I elevate with one pillow.
2) medication: 1 10/325 Percocet about 10 to 10:30 in the am and then another between 9 and 10 at night, just before bedtime. If I have breakthrough pain, I'll take another mid afternoon, but that is rare. 1 2mg of Coumadin at bedtime. I also take multivitamin (with no vitamin k or e included), BP medicine and Gabapentin. That's it! BP has been great...typically 113/76, or so.
3) icing: I ice when I feel the need. Since the pain and swelling hasn't been bad, I don't do it much. But when my knee starts aching, I apply it and leave it on until the bag gets to room temp. I usually only have to do it once and I'm good for quite a while...24 hours, usually.
4) elevating: I elevate my op side leg with one pillow, when I am in bed, always. I keep a thick pillow between my legs, at the crotch and knee, to keep me from breaking the restriction while sleeping. This has worked perfectly, for me.
5) ROM: that's a tough one... I have no problem keeping my leg straight and have been able to bend my leg. But do notice a tightness just behind my knee, when bending. But I'm not sure if this is what you are asking.
6) activity level: haven't been outside since coming home from rehab last Sunday. However, I have been able to cook, do light housework, shower, etc without a problem. In fact, I could do more, if my DH would let me.
7) exercises: this is where I've been a lazy bum! While I am sitting in my recliner, I will do leg lifts and butt crunches. I walk around the house and do the side steps at every opportunity. While brushing my teeth, I do semi squats for 2 minutes. My home PT starts Monday, so I'm sure I'll be adding to the list. I have 17 stairs to go down to get to our front door (garages in our community are the ground level with all living areas above them). I have no trouble navigating them...up or down. So, even when I'm just sitting, I'm not inactive.

I hope this is what you are looking for and I haven't bored you to tears. Thank you so much for your input and advice.

@Cynthia777
I would like to think I would have done just as well, but I really don't think so. And just knowing there was medical care around the clock, made the decision that much easier. And coming home to my bed, made me appreciate it that much more...both rehab and home!
I've tried the rolled up towel thing and it was just uncomfortable for me. I have found that as long as I don't have ANYTHING on my foot, while sleeping, it's ok. And, the occasional foot massage from hubby helps too!
I really don't ice that much anymore but whenever I'm in bed, the leg is elevated with one pillow, which seems to do the trick.
Phil isn't playing this weekend but I sure would love to see Tiger win. It would do wonders for his confidence. I know a lot of people hate him, but you can't deny how great he has been for the game. My favorite is Jordan, though. I think he is just a superb young man.

I agree with you with regards to Tiger. I feel he's already paid the price for his indiscretions and it's now time for him to get a break. I adore Spieth and am thinking he may be the one to give the Tiger Wood achievements a run for the money.

I'm wondering if the foot problem is a circulation issue?

It's possible it could be a circulation problem, but never had this issue before the surgery. Can't figure this one out. I'm hoping Josephine may have a suggestion, other than what I'm already doing.

On another note, it would not surprise me if Speith gets the grand slam before McElroy does. :fingersx:

While waiting for home care nurse to arrive to check my blood clotting levels, I thought I'd check in with an update. Today is day 25 post-op and I truly feel wonderful. Last night I stripped the bed and washed the linens and remade the bed...all by my lonesome. Now my Lady's Lair is fresh and clean. I went to bed last night at 10, fell asleep around 10:30 or so and did not wake up until 8:30 this morning. I could not believe I slept straight through without even a potty trip. I feel truly lucky that this surgery has had little or no effect on my sleep habits.
I am sitting here thinking about all my BS friends who have trouble sleeping and wish I could spread my good fortune to each and everyone of you.
I go back to my OS a week from today and am so anxious to hear the details of my surgery and see what he has to say about my progress. I know there are probably so many more things I should be doing, but feel since I am walking around the house, aid-free, I must be doing something right.
@Josephine: haven't heard back from you regarding the questions you asked of me. I know you are a very busy lady and will respond when you have time. I'll just be a little more patient. :)
Have a wonderful day everyone!

Thanks @copsham and @Tweefishy for the thoughts. I think we all have a mutual admiration society going on here, which is wonderful! But, in all honesty, I think the fact that I have my own "lady's lair" has helped tremendously with my general mood. I can slink on back to it without guilt and do what I want. Tehehe....

Hi Nana757!! Your reports are improving so quickly! It's mind boggling. :)
But?? Ankle weights??? Woman, settle down!!
But, seriously, you sound great and I think the Lady's Lair is working miracles for you. And that title just makes me laugh.. :snork:

Thanks @CricketHip. FYI...haven't used the ankle weights, except for the one time, since I've been home. But, they did have me using them every day at the rehab facility....could be why I'm doing so well...who knows?! PT is finally showing up today for my 1st home session. Curious to see what he has to say. Home nurse was here yesterday and my did my PT/INR blood check. It registered only 1.0 on the INR, which is very low when you're on Coumadin. The DR wants me to double up on the Coumadin and have it rechecked in a week. I'm not really concerned at this point. I have no discernible swelling or pain and am up and about most of the day. But, I guess, even at this stage (nearly 4 weeks post-op), it can still be a concern. @Jamie or @Josephine or @Jaycey ...do you have any advice regarding this?

Nana, you sound like you are doing great! I am curious, how active were you in the months leading up to your surgery? I bet your only slowed down when the pain was at it's peak.

@Nana757
I cannot believe it's been a month already!!!!! I guess my vacation time threw me off balance. You are sounding wonderful! Changed your bedding alone? A word to the wise...you need to milk this recovery a bit longer and get the most out of hubby's help...just saying! ;-)

Can't wait to hear how PT goes!

@CricketHip
I wasn't all that active the weeks leading up to surgery. I still did housework and shopping and on the rare pain free days, I would drag my DH out to the golf course. But the 3-4 weeks prior to surgery, I simply sat in my recliner and developed the art of becoming a slug....which I believe to have mastered....if anyone wants any lessons....I work cheap!
@Cynthia777
I'm a little impatient...if I waited for my dear sweet husband to help me, I would have been sleeping on a bare bed last night. That's probably a slight exaggeration, but not much of one. I'm just one of those people who, once I get motivated, I'm not happy until it's done. But believe, I get my revenge elsewhere! Tehehe
