THR Worries about pain and recovery<

Morning everyone....l have a concern....l am now 4weeks post THR and am having pain / stiffness in operated hip going down into thigh and knee...particularly in the morning and after sitting....goes up into the bottom of back also....seems to be better when walking....given l had a failed hip repair (screws and pins ) previously and had to have this hip replacement l worry....is it normal to have this at this stage.. lm so concerned its infection !!!....any feedback would be wonderful....

At only 4 weeks post op sounds like normal post op pain. Are you taking pain medication? Icing and elevating?

Yes...am on paracetamol and ibuprofen, this has just started in this area , is it all the muscles etc "waking up " ??? The surgeon did say that he had a lot more dissecting ti do...to get the old metal work out and l have a big scar , right on the side , where it hurts....thankyou...l will try and think positively ..just thought l would be further on...seems like 1 step forward and 2 back sometimes.....

Are you icing as well? If you had more work done in that area soft tissues and muscles are bruised. This recovery can take up to a year or more depending on how long you limped around pre-op. You are less than 4 weeks out - patience is prescribed in large doses.

Hi @Misscarol - I'm 5 days ahead of you in recovery and I'd say your doing very well for five weeks - I think the pain is normal for this stage - I know I worry about what's right and if anything Is going wrong -that's normal especially if you've had complications and previous surgery in the Past. Keep regular pain relief and ice /rest as advised . Are you using crutches still?
Staying positive is a skill that reaps so many rewards -keep coming onto this forum as I and others do as its one of the most friendly informative supportive sites I've ever encountered!
Obviously if you feel you have any clinical signs of infection don't hesitate to contact your GP (saying you are concerned about infection after surgery )and ask for telephone triage if they say they have no appointments!
I wish you well

Thankyou Jaycey...l do ice and elevate....different chairs (right height ) make a difference with comfort levels , particularly eating out at friends etc....

Thankyou Mayhip....l will , but difficult to know .. when it becomes infection...suppose you would have a lot of pain ???

On a good note....had my last anti coagulation injection last night ....another milestone...hated injecting....but , still have to keep compression stockings ...hate them....make me feel claustrophobic!!...weird...why is it that some consultants suggest them and others not ?? A friend of a friend...6 weeks prior in recovery...didn't have to wear...suppose just personal preference with consultants....but, something else to look forward to...in 3weeks...when l have first follow up with him...have a lovely day everyone....

The cracked femur and the pins should have no bearing on your pain, all of that went away. I'd say the only way it has any effect is that they had more work to do stretching the muscles further and longer while they worked. I had pins removed that had been in almost 50 years so my OS had to work hard to get them out. Your recovery sounds about normal and like most you weren't given realistic recovery timelines. If you read through threads on this board you'll see what recovery was really like for most.

Thanks Eman85. . Seems we are not given enough post OP info universally... thank goodness for Bonesmart ❤ has been a lifeline for me...

Hello, Happy Monday!
I concur with everyone who feels it's normal post op pain at this point. Especially given
your OS relayed removal of the old hardware was quite involved. Try the suggestions mentioned above and remember we can always draw the forum nurse in if you're interested.
Best wishes for a good week as you continue healing.

What you are experiencing sounds pretty common, but if you are worrying about it a lot, you should feel free to check in with your surgeon and share your concerns. For those of you who have had previous complications, I'm sure there is an added layer of stress in terms of the aches and pains. Sometimes getting some additional information directly from the dr. can be helpful. Are you close to a follow up appointment? Maybe it's close enough you can ask them then as well:)

Thankyou Mayhip....l will , but difficult to know .. when it becomes infection...suppose you would have a lot of pain ???
Signs of infection could be increased pain - despite regular pain relief - increased swelling to the area, redness, open areas of the wound that leaks fluid , fever, shivers, feeling very cold or very hot. Feeling more tired than usual . Feeling unwell .. So you can see there may be one or more symptoms .worry and stress can be difficult to handle after major surgery ( and we've had major surgery) don't hesitate to call your GP for a chat - make sure the receptionist knows you've had recent surgery and might be worried about infection) You can also call your consultants secretary to see if you can see him on outpatient basis. Or 111 in an emergency 999 if life threatening ( breathing problems/chest pain)
Why not call to see your own GP as soon as you can today ?
Take care

Thankyou everyone...rang the consultants secretary and she spoke to surgeon , who , isn't concerned.at this stage....he had offered for me to go and see him next week ..l will see what the next few days bring... it's been mainly hip discomfort radiating into base of back yesterday....

:hi: Happy Friday!
Glad you contacted the surgeon. Hopefully his response offered you some reassurance.
Wishing you comfort and a wonderful weekend! Please stay in touch :)

Hello everyone A little while since l posted. l hope this finds you all well and positive.

A question re: pain/discomfort; as discussed earlier, l still have pain in buttock radiating into base of back. Silly question? But it seems as if the numb areas are "waking up " (does that make sense to anyone ) and getting more uncomfortable. Seats l used to sit on before don't seem as comfortable, gnawing pain.

The consultant has brought my appointment early by one week. He is not concerned, he said it was quite complex due to previous failed hip repair. l have one lump under scar on buttock area which is where all the pain seems to radiate from. Have been massaging it which seems to ease it. It's not a new lump, it was there directly after hip replacement operation a bit like a fatty pad !! Sorry that's the only way l can describe it.

Anyone else had this ???

Let's tag @Josephine and get her thoughts.
Thinking a seroma or hematoma possibly. Don't know if these form immediately or not.
Is it warm to the touch or can you tell?
Since your OS offered to have the come in...you might just want to check with him
