TKR Which way should I go?

the knee specialist I have see doesn’t do knee replacements as far as I know I think that’s why he was pushing the osteotomy(might be wrong).
Big red flag here! I totally agree with you about seeing your GP for a second opinion referral. You want a surgeon who has done thousands of TKRs.

If you tell me your location and who you have already seen I might be able to help you find someone.
I’m in Northallerton
post code Dl61lx
thanks

Carnt afford private has to be done on NHs

You should still have a choice of surgeon on the NHS.
Definitely look up the local surgeons on the NJR- National Joint Registry. You want someone who does plenty of partial knees and gets good results.

@paul01609 I'll do a bit of research for you. No problem if you can't go private. At least we will get you on a list to see a surgeon who does TKR.

wife’s going to phone docs see if I can get in this week
thanks

he also does knees on young people

Hope it don’t take long to see him, all X-rays and mri is already done

paul0169, please get a second opinion and a third if you possibly can before making this life changing decision. You are not the typical case, if only because of your age. I would also be a little leary of the statement that patellofemoral damage is usually well tolerated by men. You have damage there, and ‘usually’ isn’t very certain. What if you get an osteotomy OR a medial PKR and then turn out to be one of the men who are in fact bothered by patellofemoral cartilage damage. To go through a major surgery and end up still having pain and looking at a revision surgery is not what you want, ESPECIALLY at your age and with you needing to work. I had a patellofemoral PKR in August of last year and am very glad I did. But if I had grade 3 damage in either of the other two compartments, I would have pushed for a TKR instead. Just some food for thought. Don’t rush into anything, speak with multiple surgeons and ask lots of questions.

Thanks yea I did think that about the other sections of the knee been damaged as I do get stabbing pains around the knee ,I did tell him seems to have taken no notice of me.

Mr O'Brian's statistics on the National Joint Registry look very good. You will need to have your GP refer you to him. Your GP should be able to tell you what the average wait time is these days.
Hope it don’t take long to see him, all X-rays and mri is already done
Unfortunately it is the sheer volume of patients needing procedures that is causing long wait times in the NHS.

Paul, wow. Yeah, it’s really not good that he’s not listening to you. I’m glad you’re looking into other surgeons. It sounds like it could take longer right now in the UK, but I think it’s well worth the wait. You can’t put your parts back in your knee after all!

Yea more than happy to wait it’s been on going for 13months now can wait longer, I just keep going painful but can manage.
wifes got me booked in for Thursday with dr

I’m sorry you’re living with that pain. I really do hope you don’t have to wait too long. It was kind of your wife to help get you scheduled and you can see someone on Thursday, that’s great! Please do consider getting an appointment with one other surgeon if possible. It will give you a few viewpoints to consider so you can make the choice that seems right for you. 2 of the surgeons I met with told me I should just live with the pain I was having, which was unacceptable to me. A third offered an allograph procedure that I researched but did not feel was right for me in the end. One offered the partial knee replacement, and after weighing the options, I chose to go that route. I was glad I had gotten all the information and knew my options. Good luck to you and I hope you are able to find the right surgeon and procedure to resolve your pain so you can get on with really living life again!

Little update just got back from seeing my gp , he said he would send a email to orthopaedics and told us to phone them as well, he just said you dont need a referral just phone orthopaedic so wife is going to try them tomorrow

He was very rude, I told him I’m starting to get pain in my other knee but I can manage that pain his very sarcastic reply was well your knees were born on the same day weren’t they
Based on the Drs snarkiness when speaking to you I would run, or hobble, away from them as soon as possible and find yourself a more positive Dr.

Well little update, wife phone surgeons reception today I asked if I could go for second option.
she had a look at what he was going to do to me, she said keep my telephone appointment and say I want the knee replacement not the osteotomy I will then be sent to replacment team.
( didn’t think he did replacements )

Well bit of a update, I was booked in next week for Phone call with the knee surgeon next week but today received a letter my date had changed and the new appointment was at the hospital.
so my dear good wife phone the hospital to see why it had changed, and the lady said I have to see a different knee surgeon

@paul01609 Well this is good news. That surgeon's numbers look very good. You want someone who does high volume TKRs and this consultant does! What is the date of your appointment? Hope the wait isn't too long!
