Revision TKR Totally recovered at last!

Hi Marian, glad you're doing OK. Hope the itching stops soon. Can you ask for an extra pillow and stick it under your leg to elevate a little ? I did that and it helped me when I was in the hospital. I put it from a few inches above the back of my knee all the way down to my ankle. I was so uncomfortable with my leg straight on the mattress, had to find a way to get comfortable. Hope you'll be home soon,

I was just talking to my nurse about discharge. She told me if my pain is not controlled or if PT thinks I'll be unsafe I won't be able to leave. I guess tomorrow morning I'll try to suck it up so I can leave. My knee is twice the size of the other and they done allow elevating my leg at all. Pain meds are still making me a bit nauseous.

I was also told that the medication for the spinal block makes a lot of people itchy. You would think they would try something else.

I really want to leave to go home asap. It's supposed to be tomorrow but if I'm still have problems with pain control or my mobility I'll have to stat.

Hey Sweet Girl! Sooooo glad you are on the other side of this one! I empathize with the itching.... Any form of codeine does it to me! Hopefully, it will be resolved SOON! Yea for going home soon, too. But, don't be overanxious! You are going to have to be PATIENT through this recovery! Oh, but you KNOW that!
Hugs!!!

Marian, you know it is important to have good pain control before you leave the hospital. Have they tried anything else? Did you hear from the culture they did on the fluid?

Hi, @newlybionic. I'm so glad the surgery is behind you. I understand the desire to get home asap. Hospitals are no fun; I much prefer my own bed, food and TV to a hospital. But I also know if I don't have my pain under control before leaving, I'm just going to end up right back there, so I'd rather have it controlled first, then go home. There's no giant rush to go, as you'll be home recuperating for a while, so allow them to get your pain controlled so you manage as well as possible when you get home. Don't try to "suck it up", get yourself where you can keep the pain controlled at home so you don't have to go back! I remember itching a lot and they gave me something that helped; I think they first tried one medicine (maybe Benadryl) that didn't work, so they tried another that worked, so ask them to try another med if the first one isn't working. I also have major nausea with the only pain pill I can take so they have to give me nausea medicine that I take with every pain pill. One nausea med gives me a bad reaction, so they found another that works. No anti-nausea med is perfect for me, but they do help if you can find the right one for you. Take it easy, rest and recuperate and :ice::ice::ice:!

I really just want to elevate my knee because it's so swollen it feels like it will burst. Mybe when my daughter gets here I can get her to help me. Nausea is coming back. Still in a good amount of pain. OS told me I will have a lot of surgical pain because of the revision but once I'm past that I should be feel a lot better. I found out just now they were giving me a double dose of Benadryl yesterday evening and night. So that's the reason why I couldn't stay awake most of this day. Whever I woke up I was in extreme pain. Get 2 oxy every 6 hours, a muscle relaxant tramadol for break through pain (doesn't work very well because another medicine I take for an unrelated problem cuts its effectiveness in half. Pain is at am 8 around now and I'm not due for anything for an hour and a half. It's difficult to walk because when I try to but any weight on that knee it just screams out in pain. I'm not sure what I can do at this point. New nurses coming on so I'll double check with her.

Gotta get that pain under control before you go home otherwise, you'll be miserable. Hope they find a good combo soon!

Could be the high pain level is contributing to your nausea Marion. Good that the nurse got the order changed for the oxycodone, hopefully that will help.
Are they giving you anything for the nausea?
Hoping the best for you and that your pain is controlled and you can go home on Wednesday.
BTW I wasn't allowed to elevate either while I was in the hospital :-(

Hi Marian!!!!!! I got locked out after the site attack and can only access via iPad. Glad to see you're on the other side and feeling better already! Hope the fluid cultures nothing.

They would not let my BTKR friend elevate and her legs constantly looked like balloons while in hospital and rehab. When do you go home?

When I had my ankle surgery, the doc came in one morning to do an assessment, saw me scratching like crazy and he said "itchy? That's a side effect of the pain meds." There's itching then there's ITCHING! With Celebrex I got the latter.

Hope they will let you go home soon Marian. Of course you do need to get the pain under control first. Did you ask the OS about elevating ? Then again you probably don't get to see him while in hospital. I so hate bring told I can't do something when I know darn well it'll help ! Guess that's the stubborn Irish part of me. Looking forward to hearing your pain is better and you're on your way home.

Marian, just checking in to see how you are doing today. I hope you have found the right combination of pain killers and nausea meds.

You are still being prayed for by many people on here, including me! God will get you through this!

The nurse woke me up last night for pain medications so I stayed on a schedule. This way the pain was kept under control and I fell right back asleep until around 8am. I got Zofran for nausea and ordered a light breakfast. I just walked down to the PT gym and I did some exercises. PT started pushing on my leg to ge t it to bend. I asked her to stop. Then I got the line that if I didn't get full ROM now she wouldn't want me to need a MUA. My knee is so swollen and painful but I'm at 5 and 78. Once I can get home and elevate my leg the swelling will go down and I'm sure I'll get back to normal.

OS told me my knee bent to 115 and was fairly close to 0. Imagine what I'll be at when I can finally elevate it and ice it all day long like I did the first time around. Can't wait to get home.

Oh, you sound so much better this morning! I hope you can get home and do the things that you know are right for you to do. There's no place like home!!

My oxy got changed last night from every 6 hours to every 4 hours. I have tramadol and also Robxin which is a muscle relaxer. Even though I have some pain now I can put up with it now. They are also going to give me a script for Zofran in case I feel nauseous. My OS put me on Coumadin for the first three weeks. He says he likes to do that with this surgery. This means I will need someone to draw blood every Monday and Thursday during that time. The OS will manage the dose of Coumadin I should be on and change it as needed.

I have a surgical stocking on both legs. It is really hurting my operative one because it's too tight behind my knee. I think I'm going to remove tha when I get home. I can wrap it with an ace wrap.

@KarriB mg means milligrams. I'm sorry I didn't answer you before. Percocets are usually 5/325 which stands for 5 milligrams of the pain medication and 325 milligrams of Tylenol. There are different combinations too.

I wondered the mg of oxycodone you were getting every 4 or 6 hours.
