Hey Sharon,

Not sure about the swelling part, could you check with your OS call and ask. Tagged Josephine and Jamie to see if they can help @Jamie: @Josephine:

xxooxx

It's pretty common to feel like you're sitting on something hard and the swelling goes along with it. Even though your surgery was in January, you're still recovering and this is just part of it. Don't worry....it goes away eventually.

Oh thanks for that, it does feel really weird, but good to know it will eventually go....any idea when though, Jamie ?
And thanks Sarah for tagging and getting me help :friends:

Sharon,

I had a similar "feeling" with my 1st THR and after about 7 months it went away. Takes time but it does get better. Hang in there.

Hi Sharon

Just checked in to see how you were doing sorry to hear about the set back and take things easy until the problem calms down.
Mind keep us posted and let us know how you are doing.

Billy

Hi Billy
it's no worries really, its just a bit annoying that I can't sit comfortably without feeling like I'm sat on a hard stone or a brick ! And now i know that one leg is defo bigger than the other ( I got out the tape measure ) I can't help but keep scrutinising it in the mirror :hate-shocked:
Oh well, it's not stopping me doing anything, i am going to Mallorca for the May bank holiday weekend and hopefully the pool is warm enough to swim in now....it's been so long since I have done any real exercise, my body may go into shock ! :th_heehee:

Hi I've been reading your threads with interest. You seemed to have had a really positive recovery, great news! I am now 11wks post op, and I too feel as if I'm sitting on a tennis ball on my op side sometimes. I think this is normal, as it may be tissue etc repairing. I also have the knee pain when walking and put it down to everything getting used to levelling up, as I was very lopsided pre op. Your posts have been a great support to me, as I've had a few mishaps along the way! Thanks. xx

I know I had that "sitting on a brick" feeling for many months post op. It did improve slowly (for slow read "glacial"). It must have been over 6 months before it was totally gone - or at least I stopped noticing it. I can definately recommend this memory foam cushion I bought for my recent discomfort and I wish I had had one earlier in my recovery :ideaIPB:

Have fun in Mallorca. Sounds like an awesome short holiday.
I also still have the sensation that I am sitting on something. It is not always very pronounced but then it comes back again. Guess it is just part of the healing process.
Have a great time
Bea

I'm still in the muscle pulling and slight numb buttocks stage , no feeling of sitting on something yet , thighs seem equal and no swelling, not been advised to use ice only heat to stretch muscles.
Physio today told me she thinks both legs same length but my right foot is pointing outwards and I need to try and keep foot straight when walking also muscles in groin shortened so need to stretch these out

Hi guys, need a bit of advice. Just been doing a bit of gardening in my flip flops and stood on a nail that was in a piece of wood and it went into my foot. I'm wondering how long you need to be concerned about infections for. I had my replacement end of january 2012 . I immediately washed the area and put on tea tree and savlon on it.....what do you think ?

First, you need to be concerned about tetanus. When was your last immunization? Given that it's a rusty nail, if it's been over five years, it's recommended that you get a tetanus shot. Just went through this with my SO, and that's what his doctor told him.

As for concern about infection in general, I suppose it's always an issue for us hippies. I'll tag Josephine; so she can comment.

I noticed you posted this same question as a separate thread. No need to do that. Jo likes everyone to keep their posts in just the one recovery thread. When you post, it always pops you to the top of the thread. I imagine an admin will delete your other post, so don't be surprised when you see that. No harm done....a lot of people never notice the sticky about this at the top of the thread. :)

Sharon

No I did know that, it was just because I didn;t want my question to get lost amongst others, so I posted again hoping it would catch josephines eye, as I don't know if i need to do something now or it can wait until tomorrow.....last injection was probably as a teen....many moons ago !

You need to worry about infection for the rest of your life. If it were me I would go to your GP tomorrow without fail. Get a tetanus jab and some antibiotics just in case. If the nail broke the skin and there was any bleeding all kinds of bacteria had a chance to rush in. Jamie; I'll bet Jamie agrees as well.

Sorry to hear about the rusted nail!! I'm sure that Jo will get to you with information about the infection worry, but in the meantime I'd suggest that you do follow-up on getting that tetnus shot as soon as possible. Tetnus is a bacteria that is present in the soil and the concern with the type of injury that you describe -- stepping on a nail, is that it's a deep puncture wound and bacteria can have gotten into that wound and then fester deep within while the superficial layer of the skin heals over. It's important that you were able to wash out the wound well, to clean it out thoroughly.

Take care,
Cardie

Am fifteen weeks in to post hip replacement...... now sleeping on operated side fairly comfortably, on un-operated side still with pillow between knees and most often on my back which has become the most comfortable sleeping position!!!!!! never thought I would say that!!!!

So sorry to hear about the nail incident....hopefully you have had your tetanus now...... I have mine done every ten years as a gardener.....:)

You absolutely need to get to your doctor. You need a tetanus booster for sure and probaby a course of antibiotics. Puncture wounds like this can easily cause an infection and I would take no chances.

Hi sharon

Nice to hear form you, the last time I stood on a nail was a while ago as well but thought when this occured it meant you had to go and get a jag in your rear end, I will echo Jacey's sentiments get yourself to your Gp ASAP, a nice big needle with your name on it might be the remedy.

Billy

Just waiting for the nurse to phone me back, as reception said she has no free appointments till after 2 today. Just wondering how far round my body this horrible infection has travelled. I can't stand on my foot, its too sore and the area around it is red and swollen ..........had a look at the plank of wood and its a massive, long, completely rusty nail ....glad it didn't go all the way in, there's no way i would have got that out of my foot....nasty
