MUA Tigz's Lessons in Patience

Oh I have plenty to read plenty to watch if I feel like it. That's not the problem.

My quads are part of the issue. Part of the muscle group are either misfiring or not firing at all as my ability to do strengthening exercises that lead to stair climbing is next to non-existent. This is also apparently why my straight leg raise isn't very straight. I've had e-stim every therapy. And because of my ~90 ROM with the threat of manipulation hanging over my head I've been doing PT three days a week. Last week was Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, this Monday, Wednesday, Friday. I need two days in a row off!

The help in the household has dwindled for the most part, and daughter's back to barely visiting and husband and son are more gone than home.

And then there's me wondering how the heck will I be able to go back to work full time in seven weeks? I work in a hospital laboratory that's very busy.

I guess I'm ready to transfer to a new normal, but there's nothing normal about this.

Drats. And I was determined to have a tear free day today. Oh well. There's always tomorrow?

Edited for misspellings and whatnot.

You will get there. I had a lousy ROM at my 6 week checkup but at 8 weeks it was much improved and I no longer fear the MUA. Swelling needs to go down for one thing. I can feel all around my kneecap finally at 10 weeks. Right now anyway, who knows what will happen by tonight.

Be gentle with those quads, they are waking up more than being weak and lazy. If they are still at the stage where you feel like you are operating a remote controlled leg then back off strengthening exercises!

@tigz , you are barely ahead of me so you still have plenty of time to improve ROM. My PT today said that his patients almost always improve ROM long after therapy ends. You will get there and so will I.

I think it's that threat of the MUA that scares me. The OS did say he doesn't have to do too many of them and to be patient.

You're still so early -- I wonder if you really need one now but then, I'm certainly not an expert by any means. I wonder if he would give you a bit more time if he still thinks you need one next time he sees you. On the other hand, a few people on this forum have had one and seem to think it helped.

I didn't think to ask where he hoped my ROM was to not do the MUA.

Funny, dropped my car off for some routine maintenance at dealership, and hubby was driving around the parking lot making sure the car wasn't to far away...they'd parked it in a handicapped spot. Made me laugh.

I hope this is ok to put in my thread....saw on Facebook earlier today.

Very achy last night, woke up several times only to wake up around 4 a.m. to not fall back to sleep. Last night I did some extension exercises, maybe a bit too long and a bit too late, didn't ice long enough I guess in the back of the knee?

Ah well... PT later in the afternoon. I get sneak a lonnnng nap in!

Thanks....Very nice nap!

::sigh:: PT was not painful, but the cumulative effect of all the exercises makes for one very achy knee this evening. It's being babied. :-)

I'm grateful I've had my family around a lot, but I'll admit I've been left to my own devices (literally! Ha! Not sure of the origin of the phrase but it's very accurate considering the phone tablet and kindle right around me. If anyone is a podcast and language fan check out the A Way With Words Podcast....very fun to listen to...but I digress) most of the time.

Hubby is retired and working for himself so he is in and out of the house a lot (checked in a lot at the start) and my son works very close to home and daughter *was* stopping in frequently.

Back to cooking dinners, but my new normal means someone sets the table and another someone does all the clean up (I've been doing a silent post dinner inspection LOL).

I would make sure to ice and elevate and rest for an extra long period of time after PT---it really helped me. I would ice at the PT center, and then go home and ice and elevate some more.

I was icing, at times, four to five months after my BTKR---not very often, but when one of the knees was complaining way too much, ice settled it down. There is no time period in which you need to STOP icing---keep using it.

I purchased my peddler from Amazon too. It's a different brand -- can't remember which one -- but looks about the same otherwise.

I agree with icing, @referee54 , but, unfortunately am going to have to go easy on it for a few days. Somehow, I gave myself a bit of frostbite on my knee even though I always use a towel between the ice pack and my skin. It's right where the tiny scar is from the arthroscopy they did last year so I wonder if the skin there was more sensitive or something. Icing is painful in that area since that happened so I'm taking it easy until it heals.
