TKR The journey continues

Amy Jo, I'm with you all the way! Getting back to our pre-surgery activities is really desirable! Maybe try just a little bit more each day and see how the knee reacts to it. I think we still have to do baby steps for quite a while longer before we're free to stop being so cautious. A visit to the ODIC is not fun, and it's so easy to do without even realizing we're doing it until it's too late.

Amy Jo you are doing so well in your recovery. I know it's hard to have limitations, especially having run marathons in your 60's. Wow! Hills can be difficult but you still have great stamina. Sorry to hear about your toenail. Of all things to have to deal with right now.
Patience is the name of the game for now.

You aren't doing damage with walking on hills but they are a bit more challenge. Just keep doing what you are and increasing your activity as your knee allows. I'm sorry you are still having sleep problems. I'm still fighting that issue too.

The sleep part is so tricky, I have a couple of good nights and think, OK I'm over the hump...NOT SO FAST, says my knee, and then I have a couple of bad nights and so on and so on :bawl:

How are things today? Did you get some sleep? Yesterday I got called to the principal's office (come immediately) and walked off without my cane, which I don't use at home. Walk upstairs (in elevator) went ok. And all I had to do was initial that I attended a meeting!

Hope you have a better day today. I too would like to walk more, but am kind of scared to go too far. I'm going to have to tackle Walmart this weekend. We shall see how it goes.

Yesterday was an extraordinary day. I drove the 2 hr. 15 min. to visit family. Once there we sent hours in the pool. I gave piggy back rides to the six year old in the pool and caught the four year old when she jumped in the pool. In other words did what a great aunt should do. I had no trouble walking to and from the pool from the car without a can. I did not drive home but fell into bed at 10:30 totally exhausted and slept well. I woke several times but went right back to sleep. Lady Mary seems OK just a little more stiff today so I will take it easy today. I did no icing or elevating yesterday and got thru everything OK. I still can't walk smoothly longer distances but trust it will come at some time. I am happy I can do the ordinary things like be a good great aunt.

Wow! Another great outing! You're smart to take it easy today though, you don't want to over do.

Last night I joined the community chorus for our first rehearsal of the season. We were overwhelmed with 15 new songs to learn. I now will be busy in the afternoons practicing. Our concert is in October.

This morning, at ten weeks and five days post surgery, I played nine holes of golf. I discovered that I can still hit the ball but nine holes was about all I could handle. Lady Mary started getting a little swollen. Went home and iced and elevated and am as happy as a clam. Of course, I played with a cart and it is a short course. I am not going to worry that I can't walk long distances yet. I am happy what I CAN do.

Little step will get you there in the end, Amy! Good job!

Oh yes, the things you can do is what counts! I know it felt wonderful getting back out on that course. I haven't golfed since my shoulder surgery in '12. I'm ready to do that again, too. Meeting these goals is receiving a gift! Every new, old thing that we do is like Christmas time or birthday! Wonderful gifts and so exciting!

Nine holes!! That sounds like so much fun. I can't wait to do things, too.

I'm so happy to hear you're improving and getting back to life.

And marathons in your 60s is amazing!

@LoveGiants, Amy Jo is amazing! She's one that has inspired all of us. But you will get there, too. Your baby is just a month old. I didn't see real improvement until I hit two months.

Amy Jo you are doing so many fun things and living your life. You are truly amazing. A 2 and 1/2 hour drive is a long drive! Glad you're back in chorus. It's always a challenge to learn a bunch of new songs. But eventually it happens.

Today is my 11 week anniversary. Last night we went out to for pizza and yesterday I sat with my leg down while practicing the new songs. I also did some exercises with a three pound weight. So, of course, the knee is more swollen today. I am also practicing going DOWN stairs slowly when the knee feels good. I am riding the exercise bike 15 minutes everyday. As you all know this is a real balancing act. Do too much and you pay the price. At least my knee is quite comfortable in bed and I am sleeping better. I just have to be careful when I roll over. Lady Mary doesn't like sudden moves in bed. I am thinking about going back to the personal trainer next week. We will focus on my core and uppers and hopefully I will be motivated to get some extra weight off that I put on after surgery.

It's so good to read about those of you who have "gone before" who are getting past the pain and difficulties to see something good happening. Thanks for posting it all, from struggles to victories!

Amy Jo, it feels really good to get back on track.

I know what you mean about balancing act, you feel good so you do new things then the knee reminds you "not so fast". You seem to be doing great, weights and personal trainer, that is excellent.

You know you knee, Amy Jo and you know how to treat her! You are such an inspirition! Keep up the good work and play!
