TKR The journey continues

Amy jo you are doing so well. Lucky to have that group of women in your life.
I'll be sitting around all day resting (watching dem convention) before I go off to choral practice tonight. Chorus energizes me, but I'd love to have that book club/compatible group too. Enjoy.

I have a friend who is having THR in August. I've told her about BS several times and just sent her an email message with the website. I've even offered to help her set up her thread if she needs help

Somehow the rest of that message didn't make it through. My friend worries a lot. Do you have any ideas how I can encourage her to join BS?

I've also told people about BoneSmart and they don't think it's the way to go. They still think you have to suffer to gain after this surgery. I even have people at church ask me if I'm going to pt and I just say "Yes, I'm taking pt.". They think you have to go have someone pull and push on you to make you better. I wish everyone would just give BS a chance. Just try it their way for a couple of months. But, so many people are too afraid to try.

Well, perhaps it can be presented as a place to go for support from others who are having issues and understand her feelings of pain, etc. a place to get info, to vent, without emphasizing the bone smart mantra. She can discover that part on her own once she s there. And emphasize that is nice to have people to talk to and people who will listen to her, when families get tired of hearing you and don't understand your pain and discomfort.

I agree with @mamazipp . I would also add that you could send her a text or email about the forum name after her surgery especially when she might be needing more help and support.

Great suggestions. I got an email from her saying she would try BS. I emphasized the support part and said nothing about the mantra. I do think it is different for those who have hips done. There is not this obsession in PT with ROM like the knee. I'll occasionally check into the hip pre-op and see if she really does. As an old saying goes "you can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink." I just appreciate the help I have received and want to pass it on.

Oh I didn't realize she was having hip surgery. I am told that's a totally different ball game without the immediate PT knees are bombarded with. Later, tho, she may need it. At least she'll see a supportive group of people.

I am so bored I can hardly stand it. I searched online about going back to golf and ended up being referred to BS! I am eight weeks out and I am sooooo tempted to do something stupid. It still hurts to go downstairs with alternate feet. I know that IF I golfed there would be lots of getting in and out of the cart and going up and down hills. I guess it is good that it is do dang hot out and that keeps me from even trying to golf. I guess I am lucky that there is little pain at this point. Maybe I'll go to the gym and try to walk on the treadmill. At least there I will be in AC. I learned the warm pool is bad for the knee and I have a hard time staying in the cold pool. I know I have nothing to complain about but I hate being inactive. Silly me.

FloridaGal, try the putting green for starters.

@PolarBear60 I have my putter and a couple of golf balls in my bedroom on a smooth rug! :)

I was so happy when I stepped on the treadmill I nearly cried. I was sensible and only walked for 10 minutes at 2.5. Then I went to the cold pool and was in there for about six minutes. After that I walked in the Olympic size pool for a little while. I was in the gym less than an hour total and it felt wonderful. I REALLY am trying to be sensible and take care of my baby knee Lady Mary.

I think more than anything is the fact that we have not been able to do all these things we enjoy doing that is driving us bonkers..be very careful walking on uneven ground, you have had such an amazing recovery you don't want to do anything to set you back.

Amy, you are doing a great job being sensible with your new knee. I hope you are able sleep tonight and feel no repercussions tomorrow. I enjoyed walking on the treadmill at PT and plan to do that when I join the Y this fall.

The boredom was difficult for me also, I was so happy to go to PT after two months of the hospital and my home because it felt like I was making new friends!

Your Lady Mary has me thinking of watching Downton again from the beginning!

I haven't really been bored. I'm always doing something, whether it's in the house, outside or on the computer. I've been too busy lately to get a good nap! I am grateful that my energy drain is leaving and that there are things I can do now!

Amy Jo, it sounds like you had a really productive day! Doesn't it feel wonderful! I pray your night will be pain free and completely restful! I think Jean's right. Try starting out on a putting green first. I know there's a lot of twisting involved and that might hurt your knee.

I'm watching the PGA Championship and day dreaming about teeing off, too. I know what you mean about almost being in tears on the treadmill. I'm so happy you're doc well enough to be back at the gym. I hope Lady Mary enjoyed it, too :).

I had that same discussion with a nurse friend today, telling me if I don't push hard with PT, I wont have a good outcome. Ughhh drives me a bit bonkers. She had 2 knees replaced a few years ago, two months apart, and says how painful pt was, but she wishes she would have pushed even harder to get her muscle strength better. When I try to inform her about the bonesmart way, she tells me I will regret not working hard at PT, and may face MUA if I dont progress right. Very frustrating, I shared some of the articles with her, but she disagrees.

People can be so hardheaded and don't want to try change. If only they'd try it, but most are afraid to even give it a try. Well, it's their loss. I pity them.

I don't think there's any way to change their minds. Gaining muscle strength is one thing, but we need to let out knees heal first. I got ticked off when my PT mentioned MUA. I'm not going back and am doing my stretches at home.
