TKR The journey continues

Sounds like good therapy and fun, after I finish with my PT, I think I may join the "Y", I don't have much free time with my dad, but we'll see. I would like to take better care of myself, I had lost 40 lbs around 2 years ago, and I felt so much better, then my mom passed away, my world went upside down, I gained 25 back, I'm went back on Weight Watchers and with the help of the TKR weight loss plan I've lost around 20 lbs.

I hope the pool works out for you with no bad after effects. I know it felt wonderful. I would still like to get in my tub, but wouldn't be able to get out yet. All in time.

Clara, I am a life long member of weight watchers. It is an excellent program. My weight has gone up because I have been careless but I am still below my all time high of 170. I hope you succeed in your goals. Right now I am concentrating on eating healthily, especially because I found out I was anemic. In August I'll find out what my PCP thinks.

Paula, I hope you are having a better day after such a hard night. My little blue pill has been my salvation. I don't think I could get out of a tub either. The gym pool had wonderful steps and rails and the gym had lots of elderly handicapped people working out and swimming.

@uva55 - that's great!

@Floridagal - I hope the pool was good for your knee. I belong to a local pool and am looking forward to swimming again, although I know it'll be slow going to build up strength. I've seen people there who must be recovering because they'll use pool noodles to help float and will walk in the shallow end.

I haven't tried WW, but have an app on my phone that tracks calories. I find it useful to realize how many calories and other nutrients are in food. I lost seven pounds between surgeries and am hoping to lose more once I'm more active.

@Floridagal, about 15 years ago I had gotten up to 205#. I felt miserable. I started counting calories and walking on a treadmill. I lost about 40#. Then I got back up to 192# and then went on Nutrisystem and lost 25. Then last year I got back up to 187#. I didn't want to go through the surgery weighing that so back on Nutrisystem. At surgery time I was 173#. I felt that was so much better than what it had been. Now, I just don't care if I eat or not, but I know I have to, to give my body the nutrients it needs to heal itself. I would like to lose 40 more, but every 1 lost is a blessing and much better for my body! It seems like so many of us have had a lifetime of watching our weights. Now, with these new knees it's going to be even more important! I want mine to last me a lifetime!

I'm glad you the crab is feeling better. I'm still trying to think of a name for my spoiled, possessive, controlling brat!

I'm afraid the warm pool was not good for my knee. I know you told me so. The knee was more swollen yesterday so I've been really taking it easy. I may go back to the gym again but not to the warm pool. :( It felt so good at the time.

We went to Best Buy. This time I wised up and took my cane. I ended up buying a new microwave. The LED display hasn't worked on my old one for about 15 years and I just got tired of guessing times. I'm delighted with the new one. BTW we have had at least 22 days of over 90 degree weather. I would love to be outside but it is just too hot. I will never complain about cold weather again.

Someone mentioned that the burning pain could be nerves connecting. I really like that. Every once in a while I get a burning pain on the inside of the knee. Now I will think of it as a natural part of healing.

I think that's a good way of looking at it! If it's a natural way of healing, then it's good for us! I get that burning pretty badly on the medial side of my knee. My lateral side's skin is numb, but not inside!

I'm a weather spotter for the NWS for my area. When I looked at my weather station report around 3pm, it was 97* with a heat index of 122*! I have never seen it that high here. And they're saying tomorrow's going to be over 100* actual temps. I can't imagine what the heat index will be then. There nothing moving outside, not even any birds. This heat is so oppressive. Come on fall!

I made onion soup today which involved lots of standing. I could tell Lady Mary was getting upset so I'd rush to the couch every chance I had and ice and elevate. I hope I stayed away from that dreaded club. I have noticed that my knee is not getting as hot as it use to get and sometimes the scar is white instead of a dark pink.

Paula, I should be a weather spotter like you because I am always checking the radar on my phone. Weather fascinates me. My house is surrounded by trees and I can't see a lot of the sky. I think that might disqualify me.

No, it wouldn't. I have 5 acres, but only about 1 acre is cleared the rest are woods. I don't have to log the wind unless it's damaging. Once a day I log the temperature at three different times of the day, the amount of rain and or snow. I report any hail or downdrafts or tornadoes or other unusual weather happenings. This is all volunteer and just a couple of months ago I received a very nice framed certificate and lapel pen for my 10 years of service. That made me feel really good.
I got my interest in weather from my daddy. His parents were farmers and were always interested in the weather, giving my daddy that same interest. He passed it on to me. My brother and sister aren't too interested unless bad weather is coming. I have the radar on almost all the time on my computer so I can see what's happening in our part of the country. I think you would enjoy doing it, Amy Jo. They provide the equipment. But, I wanted a system more advanced than they gave me so I bought and set up a Davis Weather Station. It's totally wireless and updates information every 30 seconds. That is how I found out that yesterday in my backyard we had a heat index of 122*. That's a first for me! Too hot for everything! So, Amy Jo if you are really interested just give the Natural Weather Service a call and see if they need a reporter/spotter in your area. I find it very rewarding!

@sistersinhim - That's fascinating! Weather interests me, but there really not much here in the summer. It's either stupid not, ridiculously hot, or obscenely hot :snork: and never any summer rain (my New England hubby misses that).

I do have a few wether apps on my phone that are fun to monitor in the winter.

Thank you, Paula, for the great information. Like Julie I have several apps on my iPhone for weather. My friend laughs at me because I am always checking the weather. In Florida it can be raining hard a mile from my house and I don't get a drop or they'll predict 80% chance and no rain. It's a real gamble forecasting here.

I LOVE weather, especially in the winter, I think because it breaks up the monotony of winter. Also maybe because storms brought on "snow days"! We'll see how I feel about it when everyday is a snow day for me. I love snowy days on the weekends too, so maybe there won't be a difference. Our weather men say it's very difficult to predict the weather because we are surrounded by mountains on three sides. That may just be an excuse for when they call for 14 inches of snow and we get a dusting.

Hi Amy Jo,
Don't rush to get rid of your cane, confidence to walk w/o it will come in time.
I remember walking with a shuffle when I first stopped using my cane, holding my arms out to my side like a tight rope walker:heehee: for fear I would fall. My PT said "take bigger steps" I felt like a toddler learning to walk all over again!

I do great walking with a strong natural stride - until I get tired and then - where is the cane? I've learned that if I am going to wander around a big box store a cane is great. When I take the little dog out for a little walk I leave the cane behind and I am fine. This morning I had errands to run and used the cane on the last two of three stops. At one of the stops people were admiring my scar and asked about the surgery. I told them about the pain, icing, and nausea.

Today is my eight week anniversary and I am happy to say that nothing much has changed. Tonight I go to the reading group which lasts until 10:00 p.m. I love these women and look forward to being with them. We talk about everything under the sun and sometimes never get to the book. It is really more like a support group. Today I blew the drive and vacuumed. I have to put the brakes on all the time not to over do. Last night my friend enjoyed my onion soup and I haven't suffered from the time I stood in the kitchen. I am determined to be a slug until I reach three months and then watch out!

It's wonderful that you are doing so well! I know you enjoy that reading group of ladies. It's nice to have something to look forward to like that. I hope the vacuuming won't hurt you tonight. I have Bible study and choir practice to look forward to tonight. A change of scenery will do me good.
