One week status: I'm becoming an accomplished walker pilot around the house - the small number of stairs I have to negotiate are no barrier at all. I've figured out most normal activities - showering, dressing, grooming, and the like - and I'm past Miralax and all that mishegas. Still working on smoothing out my stride on the walker - I can only dream of switching to a cane at this point, like a tadpole who dreams of sprouting legs. I rode with my wife on some shopping errands yesterday as a test, since today kicks off a run of busy days for the rest of the week: PT, regular doctor checkup, and a business meeting here tomorrow. (I've got to be at least computer-ready by this time next week, so I'll be experimenting with that later this week.)
One minor hiccup: all my pilot practice yielded soreness last night, so sleep was dicier than usual, and I needed 2 Oxy's instead of 1. The plan today is back down on the activity a bit, nap when the mood strikes, and lean into the ice.
A note about ice packs: they take a LONG time to recharge in the freezer, especially the big ThermPaq gels, which are essential for getting sleep. I put two spares in a small ice chest last night, but by 4am they'd melted past that lovely iciness - still "cold" but not cold. We bought three extra small packs before the surgery (cheaper, and they recharge faster), only to find out we got the kind that freezes like little bricks - tonight we'll try putting them into the ice chest to keep the gel packs cold. In the mean time we ordered three more medical packs (this time nothing can go wrnog) and they should be here in the next couple of days, to supplement the two ThermaPaqs and the one small pack.
It's more than a journey - it's a trip!
