Cappy, despite the obvious connection with NSAIDs, do make sure they test you for helicobacter pylori. It's a bacterium that gets in the stomach and duodenum and causes ulcers. Diagnosis is via a blood test and treatment is six weeks of antibiotics - job done!

Thanks Josephine, I'll make sure they do that. I'm seeing my GP on the 22nd so with luck she'll have feedback b y then

Hi Ray
about the digging - my aftercare instructions from the hospital say no digging too, ever!. Not that it bothers me as hubby does it!

Also about the heartburn, if you can't take your tabs try a glass of milk - it works for me as I can't take heartburn tabs 'cos of RA meds & I sometimes get acid attacks.

Great story Cappy, I love that you were able to walk around the water by your house. the small victories are the best and they serve to really show us how far we've come! I'm so happy for you and pulling for you Cappy Kid!

And you went to which hospital? :skeptical:

I know people with hip replacements who keep allotments and have beautiful gardens. I also know farmers with THRs!

Hi Sharonann, I take a proton pump inhibitor called omeprazole. It works very well but I had to stop it two weeks prior to the scope. It's only just getting up to speed again.

Where would we be without our meds?!?

I've said further up in the thread that I have an appointment with my surgeon on 13th September to discuss getting the "other side" done.

Well, I've just had a phone call to say that I've been booked in for left THR on 23rd August. :hate-shocked:

Tick Tock.

Hi Cappy, I take omeprazole pill daily to protect tummy from the RA meds but sometimes I still get a bit of acid - maybe its to do with whatever I've ate that day?

Glad you've got a date for the other side! At least you know what to expect this time round!

Wow! Not long to wait.
And then you'll be all nice and new.:wink1:

Including a neighbour of mine.

It's also my surgeon's only restriction. I think I'll need to get it in writing from him
I think you need to ignore it! Most people do! :wink1:
If he is the only surgeon in a couple of hundred that would impose this restriction, I'd have a serious think about it.

What's that old saying, what the eye don't see, the heart won't grieve over.

Hi
I have been reading your thread with great interest, we have a lot in common. I have had both hips replaced (17 weeks apart) and a diagnosis was missed a few years ago so I have gone through the last 12 years thinking pain and discomfort was the norm and part of the aging process. I am heading for an endoscopy/colonoscopy at the beginning of August for unexplained bowel bleeding following the 2nd surgery (hopefully nothing but better to be certain), and I too have a loch at the end of the road (Forfar Loch) about 2 1/2 miles around and great walking.

I would like to offer you lots of positive vibes about that 2nd replacement, at 5 weeks out my body feels better than ever and although I am conscious of the newest hip, I have forgotten about the older one! It feels fantastic after so many years of pain. I do lots of gardening whenever possible, and a few weeks after the 1st replacement, I was forced to dig in the garden - ground elder problem! One you do get back to the gym and strengthen all those supporting muscles, I'm sure that your body will let you know what to do and what not to do.

In the meantime I feel quite excited for you at the prospect of a whole new pain free life. I did find I got stressed in between surgeries as I knew what to expect and the prospect of a second bout of recovery and restrictions was a little depressing, however it has been so worth it! You have so much to look forward to and I'm sure you have picked up from the threads of those 'smarties' who have been out for a year or more that 'normality' is a wonderful thing!

Hi Catherine,

Thank you for taking the time to write that! You're quite correct; it feels like a real struggle ahead but I know I just have to get on with it.

It's especially useful coming from another hippie - those who have not been through the experience just see the end result without any insight to the battle to get there.

I am looking forward to being pain free for the first time in decades. Although my surgery is sooner than anticipated it means that my healing starts sooner. We're off on holiday next week. When we return I can start getting my head round the surgery and look forward to getting to the other side.

Well Cappy, you are so lucky to have one new hip, go on a nice holiday and then get the next one done. By the end of the year you're gonna be a brand new painfree guy.:thumb: Enjoy the holidays.

Have just found the instructions about digging from my hospital (Nottingham City) - see quote below

'Hip replacements can loosen or wear with time. Activities which contribute to this are........................avoid heavy lifting & digging whenever possible'

Cappy, You'll feel great once you're in recovery from the 2nd THR. I'm going back to work next week, a lot sooner than I did after my 1st THR.

Have a great holiday!

Sounds very "old school" to me. Maybe years ago this was the case - but times have changed!

Physio again at 8 tomorrow morning. Then I have a month until side 2. I'll be interested to see what the physio does with the news that I've been scheduled for the next one.
