THR The Cappuccino Kid - the story so far

He used a DePuy Corail ceramic implant with a DePuy Pinnacle ceramic in titanium cup. Is that not one of the more troublesome combos?
Not that I am aware of. CoC is a great bearing. And Corail has a record of persistently good performance. Depuy do make some really good implants, y'know!

That's great news Cappy you will be up and running in no time.
Alan funny wee story about a high heed yin, when my dear old mother was alive
we were in the hibs club and she pointed out this postman she knew and replied aye he is high up in the post office to which I replied Mum I am his boss.
To which she replied are you and stood up in front of a big crowd and shouted see that ma son is a high heed yin in the post office.
Mums eh

Congrats on being finished with your belly jabs and your great doctor report! I'm happy for you that your restrictions are lifted. I still have 6 more weeks :sigh: sounds like you are on your way! Keep on wobblin' :thumb:

Just back from my 6 week surgeon's review.

All went well - all restrictions removed!

Great news, Cappy. You must be feeling really chuffed you've had both done successfully in such quick succession. :thumb:

I'm doing well on my first (right) THR but will shortly face the question from my surgeon about replacing my left. I get moderate pain from it that is bearable but it does restrict long walks and moving around quickly on the boat etc. and, of course, it will only get worse over time.

My question: At what point in the recovery process from your first THR did you decide to go for the second? Was it your choice or did your surgeon suggest you should just do it quickly?

I am at the shall I shan't I stage at the moment. In the first couple of weeks after the Op I was thinking let's wait at least a year before getting the second one done. Now that the first one seems to be doing so well, I'm thinking maybe I should grit my teeth and get the second one done ASAP. :what:

What are your thoughts now, having been round this loop a few months ago?

Thanks

Billy, Mums are great! Mine's still kicking around and has never lost the ability to embarrass me.

Cheers Roger, I'm pleased that things are going well.

My surgeon's quote on seeing my x-rays was "Your hips are knackered". I knew that I would need them both done. I also knew that I wouldn't make a full recovery on my operated hip until the other one was done.

I was fortunate enough to get my first operation in a private hospital but NHS funded. At my follow up appointment I made it clear that I would like the same surgeon / anaesthetist combo. He agreed that if it could not be done in the Nuffield then I would be done as his patient in Glasgow's Western Infirmary. This was in June.

The next thing I knew was a phone call saying that I had been funded for the Nuffield again and had been scheduled for the 23rd August. I suspect that the decision was therefore budget related. That said, I would have been done in Oct / Nov anyway.

I'm really glad that it's happened this way. 2011 is the year of the THR for me and, hopefully, 2012 will be the year that I get my movement back. It can seem like a mountain to climb getting two bouts of surgery so close together and it has slowed the rehab on my right hip but I have no regrets.

I do think it's down to the individual but I suspect that with your good recovery and positive outlook you'd do well to get the other one done as soon as.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Cappy - that was helpful.

I'm in a similar situation i.e. first Op done in the private Spire hospital under NHS contract and I would like the second done by the same team.

I have my follow up with the Consultant on 26 October so will discuss the options then. I suspect the NHS funding for 'private' ops will not last forever!

In some ways it would be interesting (and convenient) to have the second done in the local NHS hospital - it's literally just 300 yards away compared to a 5 mile drive to the Spire. However, I would want definite assurance that it would be the same Consultant, not a Registrar or other trainee!

Great news Cappy. Glad to hear you are progressing well.

This morning I had my first physio session since seeing my surgeon on Tuesday.

She's delighted that I'm now weight bearing but strongly recommends that I keep one crutch for the next couple of weeks. She has given me exercises to strengthen my glutes and flexors. I'm sore and tired after that - but in a good way.

I am the Trendelenburg gait personified!

Those muscles sure do need work don't they? You don't realize how sore and tired after just a few exercises. I was that way after the massage. It felt great and is so needed. It really helped with the IT band !!

Keep at it and you'll be running down to your local pub very soon...:ccheers::ccheers:

Sorry but that made me laugh :th_heehee:

Glad to hear you are doing so well Cappy.
When I think of what it really means to have two hips done, one a short time after the other, I reckon it must be pretty tough.
But you are doing great.
And as you say, 2011 for you is THR year, and soon you can compartmentalise 2011 and get on with living your life.
Makes good sense.:thumb:

The exercises are really good - and hard! I'm already feeling the benefit. I can't believe that I get so tired after doing them!

They are really concentrating on strengthening my glutes - I've scanned a copy if anyone's interested.

Thanks.

It's not too bad really. I'm pleased that it's all done and dusted rather than hanging over me. I have been in pain and have had restricted movement for so long that I'm happy to go through this bit to get my life back!

Cappy, thanks for scanning your exercises. I thought I was looking at my own as I literally had the same sheet!

And thanks for reminding me - I haven't been doing my bridge exercise and that could well be why my back is playing up!

So glad you are seeing progress!

I don't really want to say this in case I jinx it, but I'm beginning to feel "normal.

I'm working hard on my new physio exercises and "forgot" my crutch this morning. We booked to go away to broken link removed: https://www.airthcastlehotel.com/ in a couple of weeks time for my birthday and I'm thinking about getting back to work.

Need to get weight watchers started too!

You sound as if you are doing brilliant, Cappy and I'm delighted to hear you feel you are inching your way back to normality.:wink1: I get small bursts of how that feels - athough sometimes the confidence it give me leads me to doing too much.. PS. Love your tribute to Steve Jobs.

Wonderful news, cappy! You sound like you are doing great and i am very happy for you :thumb: Sounds wonderful that you have a get-a-way planned, too! I think everyone on this site should plan some type of trip - something to look forward to and a celebration of how far we have come. I know i told my husband that i would like to take a weekend trip with the kids to the zoo (we have to go to seattle or portland for that) because i always felt like i slowed everyone down so much as i would have to stop and rest so much. Once i get my walking legs working properly, i'd like to see what it's like to meander around the zoo without worrying about where the next bench will be :dancy:
