THR Tee (AKA Frieds) Flipping to "the other side"

Yay! Glad you are going home and are progressing every day! My BP dropped to 90/60 at one point but mostly was about 110/70. Each day you'll feel stronger! I am Day 10 - still not allowed to shower (my new obsession, haha) but I can tell the difference in my hip/leg since Day 3 or Day 5...

Home sweet home and hubby has been a saint. Walking is easy but clearly wears me out a bit so time for a nap. I guess that's normal. I thinking cutting back in the pain meds will help. They had me on slow release OxyContin and Vicodin plus the epideral. Was glad when that got removed - all itchy and all! Have had a lot of hiccups!

You will get there soon, to join your surgery buddies.....
Rest up!

Going home is a milestone, you will most like experience energy drain but it improves each day. Here are the recovery articles for you Tee...

The following is a link to an article which provides some approximate timeframes around the healing phases and processes (and relevant nutritional information) for you to read.

Healing Phases & Nutrition

This second link is to other nutritional articles which you may find interesting.

Nutritional advice for pre op and recovery

But first the BoneSmart mantra

- rest, elevate, ice and take your pain meds by the clock

- if it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone, especially a physiotherapist to do it to you
- if your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again
- if you won't die if it's not done, don't do it
- never stand when you can sit, never sit when you can lie down, never stay awake when you can go to sleep!
- be active as much as you need to be but not more than is necessary, meaning so much that you end up being in pain, exhausted or desperate to sit down or lay down!

And then the very important hip recovery articles.....

@Sharri, I do hope that you get to go home today! I'm finding that every day is better, less pain, less need for pain meds. I was glad that I had no nausea this morning maybe because I only took one Tramadol last night before I went to bed. Hang in there, it really does get better every day, especially when you are home and can rest without all the interruptions!

So Day 3. First full day home. Husband is a saint! Ice is my friend and I need frequent naps. Had my first BM last night and I liken to giving birth. Once started didn't stop and was fearful would break the porcelain god (sorry TMI) and that was without prunes etc.

PT and nurse had first visits today. Have me exercises to be doing. Didn't notice myself but PT pointed out moderate swelling in leg. Because posterior folks keep drilling in precautions. They really make you paranoid of every little move. Hubby is even more paranoid.

Guess every path starts somewhere and herein does mine. Only pain appears muscular in nature to be expected. I think still walk a little off - long time learned behavior. Do you all find that gets corrected with time? I mean I'm not limping but feel like favoring strong leg in walker still a bit. Stairs have been easy thankfully. Hardest is getting seat up high enough to be comfortable and okay to get up out of after relaxing a bit.

@frieds. You will be amazed at how quickly you will see improvement. By the minute. I rode the bike this morning and am doing squats.. I feel amazing .. You will be feeling that before you know it

So when it comes to ice...I've had up on hip area and near incision but back and side of knee feels sore to. Switch it around or leave mainly on hip?

I switched it around. I had a couple of days early on that I had very mild swelling near knee.. I would ice there a little but mainly near incision. And groin..

Ice is a natural painkiller, so can be comforting even if there is no swelling - even at 2.5 years if I get the odd bursa pain or soft tissue pain I bring out the ice packs whilst watching tv.. it helps :)

How soon can I sleep or lay on non-operated side? Tired of being on my back all the time right now!!! Walking few times a day and doing stairs but since only day 3, I've done a lot of resting (lying down) so bum and back tired!

I've been told eight weeks! I'm not sure what approach my OS took. Judging by the length and position of my scar it was posterior so I think that means precautions for longer... you may get away with less but it'll be guided by PT and OS. I share your pain though. .. I can sleep on my back but I'm having dreams about rolling over or crossing my legs and wake up with a start. I'm doing icing, exercises too but feel tired waking today... partly due not being as comfortable as I would like to feel!

Frieds - sounds like you're progressing very well! I had a posterior surgery so progress is slow but steady for me! Day 11 and still haven't showered but I'm alone and don't feel strong enough yet! Tried sleeping on my good side last night but that lasted about a 1/2 hour - too much discomfort! But I can relate!!

I had anterior so I was able to right away. But certainly was not comfortable till about day 7 or 8. Now I am spending half my night on my non op side.. I know how uncomfortable it is to be on back.. I even started getting sore heels.. Ask doc.. Maybe with pillow between legs you can try?

Today's milestone - my first shower. Felt great. Hubby helped with the back which needed TLC as been laying on it and sweating etc. what a difference you feel when can clean up! Hardest part was him putting compression knee highs back on.

Luckily we remodeled bathrooms last year and planned ahead so built in shower seat and hand shower came in very handy. Felt safe and secure and was the right height! Looking forward to the next one and progressing further. And don't mind the occasional cat naps akin the way hehe :)
