THR Tee (AKA Frieds) Flipping to "the other side"

Another first today - went to the gym. Walked treadmill for 15 minutes. Slow start compared to many but don't want to overdo it. Time to build up. But felt good to start and be active at five weeks post-op!

Going on six weeks but this weekend started getting back aches (lower on non-operated side) and not happy. Anyone else run into this? Thinking because my pelvis was off for so long and my gait is now going back to normal that maybe the muscles are fatigued? Not happy at the moment although the hip is great!!!

That happened to me because of leg length discrepancy. In my case it was temporary until my other side was done so I used a heel lift in between. Since you only had one hip done, they say it can take up to 6 months for it to resolve. I think the muscles tighten up and things even out. Using a heel lift may help with the back ache but it also may throw off the natural resolution of the problem. I know how frustrating it must be to be free of hip pain but experiencin that lower back pain. I'd ask the Dr.'s office about it.

@Josephine - what has been your experience with folks who only need one hip replaced. I am six weeks post op and walking more as doctor said to do. Find that my right lower back and front of thigh (non-operated) side are hurting and mild spasms. I think related to gate change and fact that pelvis is now straight making the good side have to work differently. Sound plausible? How long will it take to get over this hurdle and what will help. Mornings are far more painful now than entire surgery or healing process prior.

@Josephine - not sure if I tagged you correctly. Seeking advice you may have above. :) thank you

@frieds , I think Josephine said something about being away for a conference, that's probably the reason you have not heard from her. I hope the pain has diminished in your back and non-op side.

Anyone else have back aches after THR? It seems sitting is okay and ice my best friend - but mornings after laying suck!

Frieds, are you still sleeping on your back? And if so, are you using a pillow beneath your knees? If yes to the first, and no to the second, try the pillow. It will help reduce strain on your back while sleeping.

You're around 8 weeks now, yes? There can be many reasons for the backache...referred pain from all over the place, too much activity too soon, inadequate pain management, wearing old shoes that adapted to your old gait but are now impeding your new gait...among the many.

How long? Get out the crystal ball! It varies a great deal from one individual to another....but FULL healing takes at least a year, and often up to two for all the soft tissue. What helps? Continue to ice, use pain meds effectively, calibrate activity by listening closely to your body, continue to build in plenty of rest time. It is ridiculously easy to strain to the point of causing tendonitis somewhere, and then the pain just keeps cycling around.

But also be aware that stiffness after being at rest for a while is totally normal. If the backache, or pain anywhere else, works itself out after some movement, that is totally normal. If the pain is constant with any activity, then you need to go back to the basics for a few weeks to get it all under control. If that still doesn't help, it may be time to consult your OS.

Does this help?

Thanks @sharonslp. Tomorrow is eight weeks. Hard to believe. Had backaches for about 2 - 2.5 weeks but appears to be subsiding. Still sleep on back and been using pillow under knees. Just wake up real stiff but sitting, moving and walking all make it feel better! Progress again :)

Just about 8.5 weeks and what a difference a week makes. Back muscles finally adjusted to my new gait and settled down. Walking normal with huge smile on my face. Back to the gym - walking a mile and doing thirty minutes elliptical. Feels great. I am proof just ride the wave, be patent, ice a lot and think positive and things will work out. Xoxox to all my hippy friends!

another great update!!!! Just so pleased @frieds that everything is coming up roses for you.

So this will be my last post on my thread, will focus on how I can support and help others. Today was my ten week post-op follow up with my OS. Love the man! He released me to "live life" and only requested I check-in one one year for some X-rays and check on me.

I've learned a lot about myself through this healing process and he assured me today that I will still see subtle changes as the healing is truly a six month process. Apparently as i can sleep on both sides now - i may be a little ahead of the game. For me the key to bouncing back quickly was forcing myself to workout prior to surgery. Now I'm back to gym 3-4 times a week doing 40 minutes elliptical or walking. Cleared to do my crunches today - so watch out!

Thank you to all for your support pre surgery and particularly post. Reassuring me and giving me advice when i experienced new aches and pangs - really gave me the strength i needed. This community is the best!! Hippies always!!
