THR Sore bottom

I'd say yes! I had knee swelling and bruising that didn't show up until day 17 or 18 post op.
So relax and ice, ice, ice it all :ice:

Wishing you a great week of continued recovery!

Hi
I am quite skinny and my sacral area was dry and the skin flaky prior to the op any way. So I went to the district nurse team and got the loan of an ehob pressure relieving overlay mattress to protect my derriere as the last thing I wanted a a pressure sore.

I was also given a foot pad made of gel as my heels were getting sore. The last thing you want in this situation is a compromised sacral pressure area as the treatment for that is to lie on your side which is not possible for you as you've had 6 weeks back sleeping.

I'm hoping you are in the UK so you will get the equipment for free, ehob overlays are not cheap to buy. You might have to push a bit to get the loan, but it is very worthwhile. If your skin gets dry get some cream to rub in.

Hope this helps!

When you have a hip replacement, the leg and the knee gets pulled and tugged and twisted when they dislocate the hip. So it's bound to swell up like that. I think you need to follow the protocol give you earlier which was to
rest
elevate
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)

And you STILL haven't answered my question about giving you advice. I'll post it here again for you

I'd really like to offer you some structured advice but in order to do that, I also need to ask you some questions. Are you willing for me to do that?

Just like to throw this out there. I called my hospital ward to double check on the swelling today. It's not hot or painful but they said this was normal. The nurse then asked if was doing my exercises I said I was doing very little and that I was laying down with it elevated and on some ice she agreed that was the correct thing to do.

My question is should I get up in an hour or so and start doing the exercises or wait a day or so? I figured what's the point in elevated and ice if you're going to do the exercises program later. Won't that undo all the progress to reduce swelling?

Stopped taking pain meds for now. No pain. I had 2 paracetamol at 9 am today I spent a good 1-2 hours tidying the house, even walked a bit with no crutches. This is my seventh day since surgery so far I'm happy with the progress but unsure of the above question.

I appreciate any info thanks
Fran

I'll post this for you again regarding exercises:

BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

There’s no way I could have walked without crutches at one week when I had my first hip done. I’ve read here that walking every hour or so is best. I’m sure someone with more knowledge than me will chime in soon.

Here's a thing. I wonder would anyone would have any input on this?

I live in a very small remote country area. If 10 cars go by on our road it's busy! So the people who live our country areas like this are curious by nature and I don't mean this in a bad way a bit noisy. I have often being in a shop or at a conversation by the roadside or in a field noticed how a conversation about someone who recently had a hip replacement pops up and if that person's hip does not return to normal, ie no limp etc. after surgery. They are quick to point out he did not do enough exercises or didn't listen to the physio properly. Do you find this happens in your areas?

Now I don't want you to think I care what people think. it's just I've noticed they tend to blame the outcome on the person for their misfortune of a bad outcome.

Hope I'm not straying from the fourm too much.

Hip replacement is such a common procedure now that everyone knows someone (or knows someone who knows someone) who has had THR. Of course, they think that qualifies them to be experts on the subject. They want to tell you about someone they knew who was completely recovered after two weeks or someone who was permanently disabled after THR.

It's sort of like when you have a baby and suddenly everyone thinks they know everything about childrearing. You sort of learn to ignore that gossipy stuff. I just politely change the subject. It's my body and no one knows more about my recovery than I do.

Word of warning: noticed a smell in my bed room today - nothing bad, just been eating breakfast in room - so I decided to spray air freshener in room. Thank God I noticed how some of the spray had landed on the wood floor and turned bits of it in to a ice rink. It's all fixed up now.

Do most people start by walking around their homes at first? I am doing this and have the marching music from full metal jacket on the stereo. Hope you don't think I'm weird. Before my hips went I loved climbing up small mountains to music in Co Wicklow near my home. That all ended almost two and a half years ago. I'm hoping my unoperated hip can do a small bit in March we'll see.

Shooting pains in new hip area bad all night going from top of hip down leg hard to pinpoint I think if no improvement in next 3 hours I'm going back on strong meds again notice a clicking vibration when moving leg in bed.
it has improved slightly after walking with crutches from bedroom to living room swelling has reduced some.
perhaps I overdid it yesterday. ?
I assume you would not be able to stand on it if it had dislocated ? worried.

You are only days out of major surgery. Far too early to stop your meds. Get back on taking your prescribed dose around the clock. When you start forgetting doses it's a sign you can begin to wean off them.

You would not be able to move if you dislocated. Worry not!

Agree with Jaycey, I was not ready to give up on meds at your point and I hate taking pills. I have heard with dislocation you will know it because you will be on floor howling with pain. I noticed every little click, twinge, pain and was concerned it was something horrible. Turned out to be my body healing. If leg really bothered me, it was a sign I overdid things, which didn’t take a lot the first few weeks. Ice, elevate, stay on top of pain per jacey’s advice.

The most qualified medical advisor on this forum will give you advice if you would like her to.
Was very helpful for me to get her input...
Hope today is a Good Day. First weeks are tough!

I hear your concerns. I keep thinking about all of the things I feel around my hip, leg, knee. I had an anterior approach 3 weeks ago 11/28. I was one who basically had no pain and no meds at all. Now, I’m having groin pain that I’m worried about. Sleeping is ok but I worry every time I roll over. All I can say is that this forum has helped me and the advise is good. I am doing very slight exercise and walking around the house. But mainly, I’m trying to keep positve as that old mind/body connection is not some psycho babble. It is a real thing. Don’t worry about your neighbors. I know what you mean. Everyone is an expert. Lol. I’ll be thinking about you and hoping you get feeling better every day. Keep posting. I think it helps.:reindeersleigh

Hi all. Quiet a lot of pain tonight. Made a wrong move. Bad idea! You pay a price for it.
On the bright side, was out walking up and down the road yesterday, very short walk.
Leg still swollen. Can't seem to get it down.

Today is staple removing day. My question is can you have a shower after they are removed them and what about waterproofing the strip?

Fran.

I was able to shower from the start-waterproof dressing. Nurse should let you know. So yesterday you were out walking up and down road and that night you were hurting? Watch out for pattern between activity level and later pain. The pain tells my body I am overdoing things. Staples out is a good thing.

Just returned from doctor's office. The nurse has removed my staples and did not cover the wound. She said it was fine and to leave the air do the rest of the healing and I could have a shower which I just did. It's so true about how nice a shower is after none for 11 days.

Walked quite a lot around the town of Naas in Co Kildare Ireland then to Lidl for the Christmas food shopping but had to go out and sit in the car halfway through only because it's still quite swollen. I know when enough is enough - I may pay a price later tonight but I have the strong meds if needed short term overnight.

I also want to mention what a wonderful site bonesmart is and to wholeheartedly thank you all for you advice and kind words at a time when you're feeling very unsure and worried, then you think how it must have been before these wonderful years of information which you can access while you sit in your bed. How must it have been only a few years ago for people. We are truly blessed!

I will continue to pass information about bonesmart whenever I meet someone who has to have similar operations etc done.

Merry Christmas to all of you out there in this big crazy world.
I'm sure I will be back soon asking for advice

Thank you

fran.
