THR Sore bottom

Thought I'd add this
When I was in hospital it was noted I had a rash around my waist before the operation not a big one but a line on both of my hips up high along where the band of a pair of boxer shorts would sit i
Checked it out and it was caused by detergent it was detergent dermatitis my wife had just changed over to a new detergent a week before my operation I used a cream for it it has gone now after 3 days application of the cream the heat and sweat caused the reaction with the washing powder so beware.
Fran.

I also have sensitivities to clothes detergent.
I use only perfume free detergents and liquid as they rinse out better than powders.

Hi all happy Christmas to you all.
Well the swelling is gone staples were removed last week nice scar no issues so far.
Finding it hard to stay up in the evenings
Leg always seems more agatitated after been up for the day I get up at 8 am and return to bed around 9 pm leg pains hard to pin down .more of a overstrained feeling than a specific area. I find I have to put two pillows under the operation leg at night is that ok to sleep with them under my
Operation Leg?
It's been 20 days since the operation
I'm walking around with one crutch now and limping a small bit. Sore knee area. I'm still taking pain relief every six hours.
I'm going to drop one of the pt excersises it's the one where you support under the knee and lift the leg up. I think this is causing me a problem with night pains.
I'm going to leave it out for a few days to see how it goes.
Don't eat to much turkey!!!
Merry Christmas to you all from Moone Co Kildare Ireland.

Hi @mooneguy
Pillow under leg ...absolutely...a must for me.
Sore knee...very common complaint. Are you still icing?

Dropping assisted leg raises or any obvious troublesome PT, should help get rid of unnecessary pain.

Remember the BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.
All will keep getting better!
Time and patience!
Hope your holidays are hopeful and bright!:treestar:

Hi all
I hope your enjoying Christmas
I have been out walking a bit and so far latest operated hip is going fine
But I have had a stiffness in my previous operated hip from last year it has been there on and off at the side of my leg just below hip along side area of my thigh area and slightly around left buttocks area it' feel like it's going to get stuck or a strained feeling as it start to move it loosens up when I move but it's there slightly I would notice it
I have had this on and off for the last year
I thought it may be connected to the other hip needing to be operated on
It seems a bit more noticeable since my recent operation
Do you think it's realinement of the hips or something else?
Fran.

Your body is still adjusting to that new hip. It can take quite awhile for everything to balance again. Just give it time.

Hi @mooneguy .
Hope the New Year is bringing improvement every day.
I had stiffness upon rising after sitting for quite some time and what I called "stutter steps" until muscles became loosened and engaged.
All well documented with many others on the forum.
Will keep getting better.
Hope 2019 is a double hippy happy year for you.:ok:

Hi Happy New year to you all. It's time for an update.

Well so far nothing bad, the pains come and go, in different areas here and there. I guess things like realignment are taking place on both legs and hips after all the bad years of hip problems.

I have been walking outside every day now for the last 10 days I kept it to one mile for the last 9 days then yesterday I upped it to two miles. Some days I'm very stiff on both legs when I first get up in the mornings but this improves as the day goes on. I do my pt 3 times a day. There are a few hills on the road which I have no choice but to walk. My address is a hill so right outside my gate the hill starts.

I noticed the muscles on the back of both my legs are sore in the evenings. I put this down to having not being able to walk very far for 3½ years due to my hips requiring the operations.

My right knee still has some soft tissue tenderness around it but I think this is slowly getting better it loosens up during the walks.

Sleep is improving by the day but I still wake up a lot every few hour's but I feel a lot better than 2 weeks ago.

One thing I did from the beginning was to eat big amounts of protein and take a vitamin D pill every day. I think this helped a lot with my recovery. Daytime is good. By 9pm I can hardly stay awake have to go to bed it was the same last year's this passes slowly.

I'm still slightly concerned about the stiffness from my previous operated hip. It's weird. Some days are ok then it feels like it's stalling before I move, then it loosens up. It's not up high on the hip but just under the operation site at the end of the scar it's not pain but stiff like something is temporarily stuck.

I'm due to see my surgeon next Tuesday for my 6 week check up so I'll ask him about these issues. I also had a go at driving the other day and that was fine. I'm still using one crutch just for now to keep the full pressure off my right hip when I'm outside walking.

I came off the crutch a bit too early on the last hip operation. I can walk without it but it's no harm just for now. So here I am happy walking along a nice quiet country road the weather is lovely I have two new hips no work what could possibly go wrong. Bring on (guard dogs) x 2 big ones. When I was out walking last week I had two of them ran at me growling and biting a my crutch which I put in front of my leg to stop them biting my legs. From a house up my road. I managed to keep calm and they just sniffed around my legs barking. But these were big dogs, large pit bull types and if things had gone very wrong I was in trouble. There was nobody around to help me. It scared me so that I hitched a ride back home past the house to go home. I go the other way now. I reported this to the dog warden.

I will update after next Tuesday goodbye for now.
Fran.

I’m not a nurse so I’ll let one of them answer. But I’m about 4 weeks out and my surgery side is still more swollen at the knee than the other side. I do know that knee isn’t in good shape which may account for some of the swelling, but it is bothering me a lot less since surgery.
Wow - you’re walking a long way for where you are. I’m not going that far yet and thought I read in my doctor guidelines a much slower progression. Maybe to minimize that after workout soreness. But whatever your doc suggests - and your body likes, go with it.

Things sound as if they are going in the right direction for you. I also live on a hill and it's difficult to get out walking but had my first drive on Saturday and things were fine.
I don't like the sound of those dogs you encountered but would avoid that area in the future, especially whilst you are feeling a bit fragile.

You mentioned that the muscles on the backs of both legs are sore in the evenings.
Consider dropping your 3x daily PT exercises as you seem pretty active mentioning walking 2 mi
outdoors daily, including hill climbing. Possibly that evening pain would ease if you scaled back a bit.
I think you may be overdoing it and the PT exercising is not necessary -

BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

The dog incident is scary. We had a member once early into recovery, just like you, out walking with a cane and a dog did chase and bite her, thankfully not breaking skin but she was quite traumatized by the entire event and someone had to run to her rescue. What a frightening feeling it must be to feel you can't even run if need be. I'd definitely avoid that route on the daily walks.

Wishing you luck at your 6 week post op with your OS. Let us know how it goes.
@mooneguy

I understand the hills and the dogs. I live in the mountains and if it wasn't for a bulldozer there would be no flat ground. My house sits on a hill and my road is hilly. I would first walk to the mailbox and back and then progressed down the road. I didn't use a crutch, I used a walking stick and it came in handy with the dogs.
I did find that if I drove to the flat walking track my legs didn't ache much. The hills would get me in the thigh.

Hi all
Met my os last week he said he watched me walk in without my knowledge
He was very happy and said my left hip soreness was probably due to the strain on it before my right hip op and this should settle down
Went for a long walk with my wife yesterday 5 miles along a river no hills
Bit tired today but nothing bad enjoyed
Having no pain like before.
Will return to see os in June
Fran.

:wowspring:That's quite a walk for five weeks out.
Glad you are not too much worse for the wear ....
Hope you ice it up and take it easy...lots of healing still happening.:ice:
