THR Snickers has a brand new hip!!<

Jo wrote a very detailed article about dislocation here:
https://bonesmart.org/forum/threads/dislocations-what-are-the-risks.8759/
An important thing to remember is that it's a risk, not a certainty. Dislocation is actually very, very rare. Lots of surgeons don't ask patients to follow any restrictions and their patients do just fine.

Thank you....I was looking for that article because I knew I had read about it. Too much pain meds or lack thereof. ....

Well, here's the other thread about dislocation:
https://bonesmart.org/forum/threads/dislocation-risk-and-90-degree-rule-with-videos.10181/
Knowledge is power, so keep reading and asking questions. The more you know, the easier it will be to feel comfortable going forward.

The reason I'm asking these questions is I'm trying to sleep in a comfortable position. I am 12 days post op, been walking without any aids for 7 days. No real pain at night, can do all things the PT throws at me. I know the no crossing the legs is a restriction but I would be so much more comfortable at night without that dang pillow between my knees! I took a chance this morning after fighting all night and took the pillow away. No pain, no dislocation. Gonna try tonight without any pillow.

Sorry about that! For some reason, I thought you were still pre-op. I was always a side sleeper, but found I could sleep on my back if I was semi-reclined bed and had a couple of pillows under my knees.

You don't need PT! Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

Then you were lucky! You need to sleep on your back with the triangular cushion for at least 6 weeks or whatever period of time the surgeon told you. You must be cautious!

Hi @snickers
I'm not sure if this will help any, or if Jo would agree you try it at this point but....
I use one of those long body pillows, purchased mine at Target. I lie on my side and
rather than put it between my legs, which I don't like either, while lying on my side
I put one leg up on top of the pillow.....hope my explanation is making sense.
It sounds as though your recovery is going well otherwise.
Wishing you a great weekend and continued healing.

Layla, That sounds like an idea....thanks!

@Josephine I value your experience and expertise and advice...just frustrated over not sleeping. I will follow what you have said and not cross my legs while sleeping and keep that pillow in place. Thanks.

MyAussieGirl, I'm doing great...how bout you? I'm off all meds, walking great, not sleeping worth a darn. Incision is healing great. Just in a hurry to heal.

My sleep both times has been wacky @snickers. Both times I've slept really good for say 2 hrs then up, down up... down..

Grrr drives me nuts frankly .. Though I am blessed in that I get back to sleep fast.

Did you quit the pain meds fast or taper???

I have been running around mostly errands and cleaning. I did get my first home shower in
I have a tub you have to step over in order to shower so I got a shower transfer chair makes it easier. I did PT the first time this time no need to... I can't heal fast enough :loll:

I try to keep busy as I can in a bit though I'll kick back and watch Blue Bloods... I have a Vampires hours

MyAussieGirl, Same way with me on sleep too couple hours here and there. I quit pain meds all at once...Couldn't control the constipation and realized the pain wasn't that bad. I have been showering since I came home, I too have to step over the edge of the tub but that never was a problem. Went to town with the wife today...to a hardware store..walked a little too much, and now feeling it a little. Just gotta keep telling myself to slow down. I'm glad you are healing too and doing good...hugs to you!!

The constipation drove me crazier too. I quit early last time due to it..this time I am doing much of what a gastro doctor told me to try... failing that it's adios meds lol. I agree the constipation is horrible
I take Percocet and morphine though less of them than I was told to... I agree with you on the pain too I only take my meds at bedtime I love to be out and about not to be all stoned.
I am glad you got out with your wife today I find it helps me deal with it all ...ice your hip it will make it feel much better. For me now Blue Bloods ....What do you do for fun?

Hugs blab later

@snickers You'll notice that I have merged your newest thread with your original recovery thread. For several reasons, we prefer that you only have one recovery thread:
  • That way, we have all your information in one place. This makes it easier to go back and review your history before providing advice.
  • If you keep starting new threads, you miss the posts and advice others have left for you in the old threads, and some information may be unnecessarily repeated
  • Having only one thread will act as a diary of your progress that you can look back on.
So please post any updates, questions or concerns about your recovery here. If you prefer a different thread title, just post what you want and we'll get it changed for you.
If you need an urgent response to a question, just tag a member of staff.
How to tag another member; how to answer when someone tags you

Here are the instructions on finding your thread, How can I find my threads and posts? . Many members bookmark their thread, so they can find it when they log on.

Snickers my OS does not cut the muscles no... I asked , he peels them off the bone then puts them back as best as one can. I was told the dislocation thing has to do ( mine sez 12 weeks) the muscles, tendions, ligaments need that time to get into place and heal up from being moved. Then when it's all tight in place etc...harder to dislocate

Just gotta keep telling myself to slow down.
Still early days! Listen to that hip. As you have already experienced, it will tell you when you have been too active. Ease into your mobility. Slow and steady is the best approach.

Hi @snickers , yours was one of the first threads I read in the Pre-Op section after I signed up in early September. As I'm fairly "robust" at circa 6'3" / 280 pounds, I'm curious to read about your ongoing recovery experience, the PT sessions and glad to hear it's going well for you. Thanks for sharing!

I'm being positioned for an uncemented ceramic on ceramic prosthesis on 18th October, subject to getting through the pre-op assessment on 5th October and what the OS finds when he actually gets in there on the day. In my case, the OS has said no to very limited weight bearing for the first 4-6 weeks, then to be very careful for next 3 months.

Without wishing to pry (so please only answer if you are comfortable doing so), given your PT sessions so soon after surgery, I am interested if your procedure/prosthesis approach was similar (e.g. uncemented) to that being positioned for me?

Strod, my OS also did an uncemented ceramic on ceramic and I was up and walking 3 hours after surgery. I was sent home with instructions of weight bearing as tolerated. I came home Wednesday the 18th and stopped using the walker Saturday the 21st. I am walking normally now with the nothing past 90 degree rule and no crossing the legs. My PT has me walking stairs, riding a recumbent bike, and a bunch of range of motion exercises (I really don't do many of them at home except the bike and walking) Everything feels great so far. If you have any specifi questions I would be more than happy to share. I wish you all the best and you will do fine.
