THR Snickers has a brand new hip!!<

@snickers hurray digestion!! That is a huge milestone for all of us.
I discovered something with this hip that I really ought to patent! Shortly after I got home, we did a load of towels and the end of one old one ripped off at the trim section. I ripped that section into 3-4 thin strips about 20" or so long, long as an old towel is wide, and used them to dry between the toes on my op leg! For posterior approach, one would rip the old towel lengthwise I guess. For my first hip I remember successfully wrangling the towel between my toes, but this left foot wasn't cooperating with that! And for washing my foot, I had my marvelous foot-scrubber.

So glad walking around feels good-- that's life coming at you with a big smile on its face!!!

Walking, shower, took....left...went potty...
Pain is much better... Yayyy you... us ...
We did it ✳:wowspring::spin::dancy::happydance::happydance::dancy::spin:

Went to PT today....walked without the walker across the room, did some exercises, and rode recumbent bike for 10 minutes. Hip got really angry by the time I got home. Now icing and taking pain meds and muscle relaxers. Gonna be awhile before 100%.

Ummm @snickers PT this close to surgery is crazy. My OS said both times no sooner than 4 weeks AFTER they see me in office..which is about 10 days Post OP ...total no sooner than 38 days after surgery. This is too soon no wonder you're sore my friend. Take it easy :ice:

I thought that might be the case @snickers but trust me....well, you'll see semi soon all the people that work for this site... volunteer for it...the Orthopedic nurse who works here will more or less agree with me. Light walking in PT sure but this isn't right :yikes:

I am just worried about you man this is crazy. Like I said walking sure but you're just days out of surgery. Lol you're supposed to feel a little better each day not worse :running:. None of that dude HUGE HUGS

Just popped on to see how you are today and what you did? How you feel?

Me we went for rides, to the library... I cleaned here a lot.....just tried to keep busy.

I see the PA Tuesday

Pretty aggressive for someone so early out of surgery. And your hip obviously agrees. Perhaps have a very frank discussion with PT. It should not hurt nor should it require a weekend of recovery.

After a few if those PT sessions and obvious long recovery, I finally just plainly stated that I would be taking a hiatus from PT and would do many of them at home, which I didn't for the most part.
I walked when I could and let my traumatized hips heal before I started aggravating them. As Aussie said, about 4 weeks before any PT again and it improved exponentially.
It is hard when you have medical professionals giving conflicting advice but To my knowledge, I am not aware of anyone on this site who suffered after hip surgery from NOT doing the PT, and I know many that have, so.....
You worked very hard to get this done.
It is your choice.

Went back to PT today. Expressed my concerns with the aggressive PT. He told me if anything hurt to stop. The only two things that I couldn't do because of the pain was stepping up a stair backwards and sitting and lifting my thigh straight up. He put me through a lot if other exercises without any pain. Good thing because I've stopped pain medication due to it stopping me up so bad. Even milk of Magnesia wouldn't break things free. Thanks all for the advice and encouragement. ...things are progressing nicely.

Awesome @snickers I am so proud of you. I hate the constipation from pain meds too makes you wonder how junkies do it. I am cutting my meds back in about a week.

You're really doing well. What a nice feeling

@snickers you are doing very well indeed! I am one of those who'd say, you are overdoing it in the PT department. I did some minimal (nothing like what you're doing!) PT for my first hip in the first couple of weeks, but didn't really need any as I could already do what I could without pain, and was told not to do anything that hurt. This hip I have done ZERO of any kind of PT, except all the ankle pumps and quad and glute contractions for prevention of DVT. Zero. (and my OS's PA commended me, saying that all hips need is walking. Sound familiar?) Early on, when I was walking indoors and on the deck, sometimes I'd walk sideways to mix it up, and that was fun, but I wouldn't call it PT. I am 10 weeks tomorrow, and I just spent a mostly pain-free weekend walking all over Montreal, and when I wasn't walking, I was sitting in classes, restaurants, or an airplane. Sure I was tired climbing a big hill, but I'm in terrible cardio shape from not being able to do anything about it because of hip pain. I will start in on lower body work in a couple of months, I think. Don't want to give myself chronic tendonitis of the groin areas again!

So--- I am very glad you spoke out to your PT and he was amenable! And you know what? You should be relaxing lots anyway, givng your body time to heal itself up. That takes a huge amount of energy, so my theory is, the more I did other stuff with my energy, the less I healed. Patience is hard to come by when you feel so good with no more OA pain!

Agree 100% with everything Sage Zauberflote said. You worked hard even to get to surgery. You will be a star recovery story. Healing wishes!

Hi @snickers
It sounds as though you're on the right path.
Best wishes for a continued smooth recovery.
Hope you have a great rest of the week!

Ok...if they don't cut any muscles using the posterior approach, why is there such a risk of dislocation for the first 6 weeks? What changes after time as far as dislocation risk is concerned?

Hi @snickers, no medical expert, but I think 6 weeks is how long it generally takes for the joint capsule to heal. Once that is healed, the dislocation risk goes down.
