Shawnna,

So sorry you had to go through that trying episode but so glad for you and your son that it all turned out alright. Working PT from home sounds perfect for you right now. Sending you peace, patience and perseverence...

So sorry to hear about your son. Hope he is on the mend!

Do take care in the snow won't you? It's a nightmare for new hippies.

Indeed it is scary! Shawnna, have you heard of these things to put on your shoes? I wouldn't be without them.

Shawnna,

I'm sorry to hear about your son's problem and can't imagine the added strain that puts on you.

Get rest when you can...take some deep breaths...ask for hel when you need it.

I wish we could cancel snow and ice for all of us with new hips. It seems fair to me!

Hang in there and good luck to your son,

Z

I agree it sounds very frightening! You and your son are very brave people. I hope he is feeling a little better. Poor guy ...

Hi Shawnna, so sorry to hear about that episode with Ryan. That must have been scary. Hope you are both feeling a bit less bruised now. And take care on that ice...

Thank you all so very much! You are all so incredibly kind to leave such encouraging messages.

Here's a pic of my front yard flowering plum tree - that isn't going to survive this storm here in the Pacific Northwest.

And when the snow's gone, I'll have to get a chain saw and clear it out - or hire someone to do it. I'm hoping by spring my hip will be a non-issue; I've always wanted a chain saw!

Oh my goodness thats snow for sure!!

Shawnna hope today went well for you. Love those shoes WOW!

Sending more love...

xxooxx

Boy oh boy!... My NH BS friends are having some serious snow falls...

Hard to imagine sitting here with the air con on!

Stay safe everyone - those shoes look like an absolute necessity..

Shawnna

That was tough on both you and your son.

Hope you are both feeling better soon. It sound like you are a great support for each other

Take care and rest as much as you can.

I bought Yaktraks the year I had my THR. They are great! Only downside is you need to take them off before you go into a shop or you will skate!

Stay safe Shawnna - that looks like a lot of snow!

Some chain saw trivia for hip folks...

I'm not exactly sure why, but chain sawing for any amount of time was one of the most aggravating activities for my bad hip. We had a very damaging storm in Oct where many folks were without power for a week and I did a moderate amount of chain sawing and it was a day like that that I was made all the more confident that I needed to get rid of that failing hip.

it was not an activity that I expected to be terribly hip-centric...

Chain saws are great...but they come with more than their share of risks

Shawnna-----Sending best wishes for a safe and healing:rest of the winter for you and Ryan. :doggieshmooze:

The links are all in there,Shawnna. Though some might be UK websites it will give you an idea what to look for. Worth their weight in gold!

As for your tree, surely give it a chance this year and see what it does? Seems a shame not to do at least that.

Shawnna....your tree looks like ours get in one of our famous Midwestern ice storms. If the branches don't break, you'll be surprised at how it comes back once the ice melts. Don't mess with it!!! If you try and get the ice off, you can break branches and harm the tree. Let nature be its own wonderful self and you just may not need that chain saw!!!

Here is a photo of my flowering crabs following a storm (the smaller trees in the foreground in front of the fence - normally they are twice that high). They were just fine afterwards!

I really don't want a tree in my front yard that lists this much. Look at how much the trunk is leaning sideways (see red arrow). What you can't see is that the roots have been upended as well.

I suppose I could try to pull it back up somehow (not sure how) and see if it survives. Anyone have ideas how to do that?

If the roots have heaved out of the ground, you may be able to get it upright again if you work with it as soon as the snow and ice melt. You can pull it back upright with the cables used to stake a new tree. You'll need someone to help you because one person has to push on the trunk while the other person secures the cables with ground stakes. You'll need at least 3 cables and stakes. Be sure to get ones that have rubber guards that would have contact with the trunk (protects the bark).

We've had to do that with a couple of our Rose of Sharon trees. They are top heavy and can tilt easily until they get really established.

Are you sure it isn't cracked anywhere?

I haven't inspected it up close yet. Will do that as soon as all the snow and ice melt; probably next weekend.

Since my son's shoulders dislocate with the least amount of effort, I'm afraid I'll have to hire to someone to help me get it back upright.

Maybe a tree expert or something? We'll see.

UPDATE ON MY HEALING

I've irritated my groin again...... have to go to the office full time two days this week so am really hoping I can calm it down with rest, heat etc.

Ugh............. I'm worried my iliospoas syndrome will become chronic.

I doubt if it becomes chronic. You are just in a stage in your recovery where you can't really do any aggressive stretches. Once you are released from any restrictions perhaps some PT to help you control this?
