THR Sharon's Anniversary Waltz

Hi Sharon, thanks for popping by on my thread, yes, priorities... They sometimes get mixed up when one is trying to recover, work and live.. But I can always pop over to your thread for a dose of sanity and logical structured thinking.

I love your posts and am so thrilled you re doing so well hon!

I, too, enjoy your posts so much! You have so much wisdom. Everyone has a gift to offer to the rest of the world, and I believe that is your's.

Take care and keep recoverying. Isn't it great that we only have 2 hips? No more left!!!!

Dorothy

You hoo .. Need another Sharon update sharonslp;

I am sure all is going well xx

Hi Sharon, came over to see what's shaking with you and I see you have not posted for yourself in a while. Hopefully that means you are still doing well and recovery is going stable and steady. cathy

Hi all. I have not been motivated to post anything since my recovery continues to be so boringly uneventful. Yes, I know, in this context boring is good good good. For all practical purposes, I'm pretty much restored to full functioning, but my classes don't start for another three weeks, so I'm just hunting about for things to occupy myself with until then. Tomorrow is my last PT session, and it is telling that I will actually miss going. I was so fully immersed in school all year long, and then I had my exciting trip to Costa Rica, and then I had surgery, and then I had the initial recovery. But that's all done....and it's a sudden letdown. I don't know what to do with this much free time!!

I wish my kids lived closer. I would love to be spending time with the little grands everyday, and then breathe a sigh of relief when I give them back to their parents. I would be righteously tired out. I had my 4 year old all day Tuesday, and we had a delightful day.

Come December when I finish my program, I can see that I have to find some part-time employment or a satisfying volunteer gig. I'm an avid knitter and I meet with several groups of friends during the week, but that's not enough. My brain is just beginning to get past the anesthesia fog, and it's ready to be engaged again. Phooey on summer vacation.

I know many hippies are agonizing over having to return to work too soon, and I'm certainly grateful that I don't have to worry about the full-time grind of ANY career. But I do need some external structure in my life.

It's also a rainy day....the first in a long time here, and we needed it, but it meant I couldn't get out for any walks, so I'm kind of climbing the walls. Tomorrow....rain or no rain....I'm leaving this couch and doing something!! Even if it's just mall-walking.

Sharon

Well Sharon, I see you are getting along quite well. Hey, you might be bored but I'm glad you are sailing along so smoothly. Posting when things are going well is good for newer people to see. So many times we post when there are issues and don't when things are going well. They need to see that some THR are without much fanfare. Anyway, I am glad you are doing well. You'll figure out What do do with our extra time when your classes are finished-I have no doubt. Cathy

I agree with Cathy--it's really good to post when things are going well. I know I would have been extra scared going into this the first time if I read about mostly the bad things people were running into. There is definitely more good than bad to this procedure!! Reading about a super fast recovery like yours may give someone who is scared that final bit of confidence to have it done!

With my current hip, I was a little nervous posting so much about my muscle tear, but I did it not only for myself (needed to share it and vent for my sanity), I also did it so perhaps someone else can be spared going through this if they know that PT can go a little overboard sometimes and they DO have the right to say no to anything that's too much before damage happens.

We all learn from each other. We need to share the good and the bad.

Back to you, Sharon! Quite impressive--back to full functioning within a month!!!!!! That's super!!! I hope you can find something to do so you don't feel so bored--I take it you are a high achiever type of a person. The kind who makes me tired just watching them do all they do in a day, :-) Go for it!!!!!

Glad to hear about how you are doing, and I'm very happy things are uneventful for you--yes, uneventful, even boringly uneventful, is a good thing for a hip replacement recovery :-)

Take care,

Dorothy

Dorothy, yes, I think we need to post it ALL, for support and so people tuning in can see all the possibilities. "super fast recovery ?", I certainly would not call mine that but I would call Sharon's that - amazing!

Yes please keep posting Sharon. So thrilled for you that hip two recovery is going so well :)

Hi Sharon, just popped by to see how you are doing?

Sandy, you poppeted in. :)

Hello Bonesmart world. Getting close to the six week mark, but unfortunately my OS appointment isn't scheduled until seven weeks. That means an extra week of restrictions that I am quite sure are ready to be lifted NOW. I am frankly breaking the 90 degree rule a lot already, but I am trying to honor the don't cross the midline rule. Sometimes I go to cross my leg over my knee without thinking, and I am shocked at how far I get before my hip twinges enough to remind me that I can't do that yet.

Now that PT is over, I have predictably slacked off on my exercises, but I am walking regularly. I still need the cane to do longer walks. I am starting to cut back on pain meds. My current routine is:
One vicodin at night. This gives me 7-9 hours of good sleep. Amazing!
One 50mg Tramadol plus one 500mg Tylenol in the morning.
Two tylenol around 1pm.
Two tylenol around 6pm.

This seems to be working well, so I'll stick to it until it feels like it's time to tinker.

Most days, my routine is to wake up around 9am or so, swallow my meds and wander to the couch. I eat breakfast, read the paper, catch up on online scrabble games, check facebook, and otherwise waste time until suddenly it's close to noon and I decide to get dressed. Most afternoons I find somewhere to go....friends to knit with....errands....appointments....whatever. I haven't needed an afternoon nap for a while now....well over a week or two. Evenings....a good walk after dinner, maybe grocery shopping, maybe seeing friends. Back on the couch to watch television and knit and read. Sporadic exercise now that PT is over. Hmm...this really is a boring life right now!! No school, no dancing, no travel plans....yet. But soon!

I did map out a six-year plan though. This has nothing to do with hip replacements, so feel free to cut out now. If you are at all curious however, here it is:

Fall 2012 Finish Paralegal program

Jan - June 2013 - Begin LSAT prep course (involving 4 hours a day of study). At the same time, either do a ten hour a week paralegal internship OR begin hunting for part-time paralegal work - paid or volunteer.

Summer 2013 - Take the LSAT in June. (I've already taken it once. My score will get me a 25% scholarship at the law school I hope to attend. That is a pittance. I need a much better score to get the 85% scholarship that will realistically allow me to go to law school.)
After the LSAT, do some significant travel.....thinking of a trip to Alaska with my SO, and/or a knitting cruise somewhere really interesting.

Fall 2013 - hoping to take my oldest granddaughter to Disneyworld. Hoping this will be a tradition for each granddaughter when she turns 7. By the time I've taken all of them, the oldest will be a teen, and I hope to establish a tradition of taking each of them somewhere exciting when they are teens. Hoping I am healthy and mobile enough to do this for the next umpteen years.
Also do another internship, or continue with whatever part-time work I have managed to find, if any.

Jan 2014 Begin law school. Will go part-time for five years, so I can still have a life. Do not ask what I will do with a law degree once I have it. The education is the whole point. Figuring out how to make it useful is the NEXT long-term plan. However, if called upon to serve my country, I am interested in being on the Supreme Court.

That's it. That's how I see the future unfolding. I'll come up with a plan B if I can't swing law school, but really hoping I can make it work.

Anyone else want to share a five year or more plan? I fully realize it takes great optimism to plan for more than five days ahead. But I do better if I have an actual plan and then have to deviate from it, than if I just wing it from the start.

Sharon

Hey Sharon, love it, love it, love your six year plan... Jolly good! I know what you mean about it being all about the learning..

You have a new photo and your hair is shorter, you look fantastic!

Must admit, I wouldn't mind the boring lazy days right now, but without the surgery reason!

Not sure I can go six years, but certainly 2 years plus.

Aug 2012 - Sept 2013 - Work & Nordic Walking, visit beach home, repeat...

Sept 2013 - Jan 2014 - second THR and recovery

Jan 2014 - Sept 2014 - work & Nordic Walking and visit beach house

Sept 2014 - Mar 2015 - long service leave

Mar 2015 - Apr 2015 - work, use up all accumulated leave, then retire to the beach house & more Nordic Walking.

Then whatever takes our fancy!

Volunteer work with getting back into IT programming (code cutting) and using our skills to help volunteer agencies.

Tendering our veggie garden, cooking, eating, more Nordic Walking.. to counter all the eating!

But I am absolutely 100% certain BoneSmart figures in this plan all along the way..

Hi Sharon,

You are doing amazingly well and it sounds like your hip is coming along nicely too!! :thumb:

Your family is fortunate to have such an energetic matriarch with so many talents and so much to give.

When you finish the paralegal program will you do any type of work in the Court system or a law firm prior to the LSAT and law school steps? I have to craft some sort of career for myself now that the kids are in college and high school, I just don't even know where to begin on that... My Bachelor's degree was many decades ago and not really pertinent as a stand alone, nor do I want to get back into the type of human services work that I did prior to children.

I admire you greatly and thanks for sharing your hip stories and your 6 year plan -- obviously there is a great deal of life on the other side of the mid-life crisis point that I seem to be quagmired in currently...

Take care,
Cardie

Hi Sharon
Like your new photo as well and glad to hear everything is going so well, you certainly have your life planned out for the future. I am afraid I don't have a five year plan the only plan i have is hopefully after the year I can focus on going somewhere warm with the wife.
Poppet retioring to the beach house sounds like a plan. :thumb: #

Hey Sharon, I was thinking that maybe it might be a good idea to have a thread going in the social room about our future plans. That way more members will engage. I think it is such a great idea and helps one to focus on the future beyond recovery - what do you think?

What say you Jamie hon? Jamie;

Sharon, just wanted to drop by your thread and tell you how much I admire your posts to others on the forum. They are so informative, insightful, and comforting. I go away feeling better myself. I also enjoy your updates---so positive and fun. Thanks for all you do on the forum---you are a real asset to all of us.

Hi Sharon, just catching up. Love your new pic, you look great, nice and healthy :) you are an inspiration, not only in recovery but your motivation to even have a 6 yr plan. Fantastic!

A plan is what I am working on for myself right now. Leaving my job, moving to a new place for my partners job, having surgery and a medium speedy recovery, I am feeling a bit lost. I was thinking of changing careers, but not sure what to. Also need to get some more structure in my days even if it is volunteering for a bit while figuring things out. I love not working and I love having had the time for all our entertaining of visitors and now it's time for a bit more focus and stimulation.

I am so happy that things are going so well for you. School will start soon and you'll be busy once again. Don't rush it and try to make use of this last bit of leisure.

Hi all. Just about ready to close out on 8 weeks of recovery. I've been to my OS for my 6(7) week checkup, and all is good. My restrictions are lifted. I go back at 12 weeks for the final check, and then I'm pretty much cut loose.

My pain med regimen has changed a bit. Still one vicodin before bed. Two tramadol first thing in the morning (I keep trying to cut it to one, but it just doesn't work. An hour later, I end up taking the second.) I've had to stop taking tylenol....it upsets my stomach. I was taking just one tramadol around 1pm and another around 6pm, but in the last four days I have been skipping the 1pm feeding and it seems to be working out well. There is a little more stiffness and ache when I first get up from sitting, but once I'm moving around I feel okay. As long as my gait stays comfortable, I'm a happy camper.

Several people have mentioned their weight loss progress in their posts. I think we are more apt to mention it when there actually is progress. Mine has been modest, but I am hoping to build on it. I had lost 7 pounds in the two months prior to surgery, and I've ditched another 5 since surgery. I lose very slowly, no matter what I try, but slowly is better than not at all.

Classes have started, which I am happy about. But I find that I still tire easily....I wonder if this is due to the meds still in my system, or just the intense healing going on under the surface. Either way, It means Tuesdays and Wednesdays are busy days, but they are followed by five easy days. I am not zipping through my homework either....my attention span is still rather fragmented.

I have a trip to Denver set for early October to for the birthday parties of my 1 and 3 yr. old grandgirls. I think that I could handle the airport pretty well even now, so by then I should be very ready for a trip. In other words, life is steadily returning to normal.

Love hearing everyone's longer-range plans. Sandy/ Poppet; I think it's fine to start a thread in the Social Room, but I don't particularly want to be the one to start it. Go ahead if you like, and I'll copy and paste mine into a post there.

Cardie; C Mac; your quagmire won't last. I think we all go through cycles where we need to retreat and just let our minds wander and mull over what's next. Our physical issues are sort of a way of giving us permission to indulge in introspection. Part of me wants to jump right into an internship in January so I can get some court or law office experience, but I'm also looking at a trip to California to see family in February, so I'm not sure I want to take on obligations that would prevent that. If I do actually get to law school, I'll have five years of very little vacation time, so I want to get some important trips done before that starts.

Judy/ bottomshollow; what a warm and wonderful thing to say! Thank you. :) :) :)

Cathy/ VThereandnow; sounds like you are in a stage of transition too. Your avatar always makes you look so relaxed and laid back....I picture you coasting through life with a happy grin.

Time to take my sleepy self to bed, and catch up on threads later.
Sharon

Where has that (almost) 8 weeks gone Sharon, it seems like just yesterday, that you were in pre-op! So pleased that your restrictions are lifted, your recoveries have mostly both gone well, I am thrilled for you.

The trip in October, sounds perfect timing for your grand babies birthdays.. you will be that much stronger...

Funny, story, but last weekend, my hip set the alarm off going out of a sports store... we didn't make the connection at first, so walked back in to get the bags checked, of course nothing wrong there, went back through the doorway and 'bingo' the alarm went off again... then I said to SO, I bet it is my hip!.. sure enough, I blocked the signal the next time through and the alarm didn't go off that time.. they had a great laugh in the shop.. said that was a first!

Pleased classes have started, I am not surprised that you are tiring easily though - it is the 'ole energy drain' we keep reading about.. it will improve and the brain fog will disappear and you will be able to concentrate.. just time.

Take care x
