Hmmm...it's interesting to read on this forum about how many times folks go to PT and do things that hurt and then suffer for it afterwards. I do think we all think "oh, they are the professionals and I need to do what they say" when in reality, WE are the ones who are the experts on how our bodies are feeling and we need to be clear and advocate for ourselves from the very beginning. I was in PT at various times for a couple of years before the whole hip deterioration problem was diagnosed, and I really liked PT. I was a good, compliant patient (I actually DID the home exercises they prescribed, unlike a lot of folks according to my PT). I felt, at least for awhile, that the PT really did help strengthen my core (I thought I had a compressed disk and my pain was primarily back pain/sciatica). But he was always very solicitous, asking frequently, "how does that feel?" and there was never an exercise he asked me to do that I felt I couldn't handle. On rare occasions when I did something and it twinged, he had me stop immediately. If I go back, and at some point I think I might, I would be very clear upfront about how I am doing and what my goals might be for PT. We all need to stand up for ourselves, pre or post-surgery. I remember when my kids were younger I'd occasionally get the "you're not the boss of me", and I think we need to emulate this attitude as adults sometimes!
