Dave, thanks for updating. I'm so glad to hear how well you are doing. As with you, Julie and others here, the past 12 months have been long. I'm hoping in 7 weeks I'll be posting as positive as a post as you just have with my 2nd hip replacement recovery.

Hi Dave

Great to hear you have got good reports from your physio and consultant. You must be feeling happy now to have got both hips done and be well on the way to a more active and pain free life. :yay:

I hope you will pop back to BoneSmart from time to time to check up on the rest of us who are still facing more surgery or prolonged recovery. I know it's difficult keeping up with everyone now - there seems to be a lot more activity on the Forum than there was a couple of months ago. If I leave it for 24 hours there is over a page full of new messages. I guess I'm spending less time on the computer now I am a bit more active - maybe that's the reason. You might see more of me for a few weeks in February!

All the best; enjoy your restriction free life - hoovering, dishwashing, decorating - great! :thumb:

Thanks for your comments

Janet - Your encouragement and kind words for everyone on this forum is fantastic. Your spirit is unbreakable and I have no doubt you will get your present issues resolved. I shall be following your posts and thinking of you throughout your journey

Charlie - I'm not plannig taking up kick boxing any time soon - thank heavens!

Julie - You will feel like the Bionic woman when your knees have been done. You will undoubtedly get there. My thoughts are with you

Liz - Wow , that come around quickly. Good luck for Tuesday.

Roger - Holiday in the sun, then new hip in the new year - by summer you will be great.

i'm not planning on going leaving this forum anytime soon; even if I don't post very much I will be following your progress.

Regards

Dave

Great news Dave you really are doing well and I echo what other people are saying I think it's important for members to keep in touch so don't wander to far away Dave.
Take Care :thumb:

A very brief update

I started back at work on Monday after 7 weeks off.

The intention was a phased return working reduced hours. It didn't work out quite that way so Monday to Thursday were almost full days and Friday working from home in the morning and the office Christmas meal in the afternoon.

I haven't felt as tired as last time which is the good news but have experienced more discomfort/ mild pain. This has not only been in the area of the incision but also in the groin area at times.

It is very intermittant and I don't feel the need to take painkillers. I don't remember any groin pain with the first hip but I anticipate (hope) it is just the natural healing process for this hip.

I'm still feeling really encouraged that by spring all of this will be behind me.

I wish all fellow bonesmarties a happy Christmas and much improved 2012.

Best wishes

Dave

Congrats Dave, sounds like u are making significant progress. I'm sure as we progress we will face minor issues, but these are just that minor discomforts in comparison to arthritc pain.

Hi Dave

So pleased to hear from you :)

I know that we all have to get back to normality which includes working - but I missed you.

I guess that having had the two hips done you are able to compare your recovery of one against the other. I am sorry that you are experiencing some discomfort, hopefully this will settle down in due course.

Pleased that your stamina levels are holding up, this is key to going back to work I think.

Yes, by your Spring, you will be feeling 100% better I am sure.

It is a long journey - well for life really isn't it. I know that we can regain mobility without the bone on bone pain and this is such a blessing

But I have come to realize that it is all relative as to age and proposed activity levels. Was just thinking a few moments ago (Sund 18 Dec, here in OZ) - what are my expectations for the future with my hip?

Mostly, I want to walk upright and be pain free. I have passed the stage in life where I want to climb mountains, water and snow ski, all these activities were done before the bone on bone pain. I am moving into a more sedate phase of my life heading towards retirement. Veggie gardening, walking along the numerous pathways and boardwalks over the water, cooking for friends, doing some painting and volunteer work, so I have come to the conclusion that if my expectations do not include climbing Mt Everest, my hip (and eventually the second one) will service me well. Travel, well we were lucky to have travelled a lot years ago, worked overseas and did all the active things we wanted. So there is no desire to do this again. Probably the only challenging activity I want to do is kayak around our wonderful inlet and swim and snorkel with the fishes. At this stage 4 weeks mobilization I can't comprehend how to get down to the kayak or get up, but WHERE THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY! That has always been my motto...

I will Chat with you soon before Xmas, lol Sandy xx

Good progress, Dave. You certainly can expect to have some aches and pains as you increase your activity level like this. It will get better!!

Absolutely! Remember you now have 2 surgeries under your belt (), no pun intended! After the first one, you still had one side painful, but not operated on. Big difference this time probably because of bath sides haveing been messed around with!

Lots of stuff went on in there!

Thanks to you all for your comments and wise words.

Sandy,

We have been thinking along the same lines!

I have come to realise that whilst I have two shiny new hips that are only 7 months and 2 months old respectively, they are in a 59 year old body!

Its no use thinking we are going to get back to the activities of a 20 year old!

Perhaps in many ways that not a bad thing anyway!

Julie

We all deseve a break - you especially.

However from my point of view....is it stupid to think I will be windsurfing again?!!

I don't know - but in any event lets try to read what is going on inside, and see where it leads us.!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully the start of a new adventure for me - and also ultimately for you

With kind regards

Dave

Amen to that Julie and Dave xxx, Sandy

Dave....while it won't be tomorrow....or next week....or probably even next month, I do think you will be able to wind surf if you want to. You'll just have to work on your strength slowly once the healing is done.

Sounds like you are making great progress Dave. And I'm sure you will achieve any goal you set yourself as you seem to have the right mental attitude. Good luck .

Hi Dave

Just checking in with you?

Sandy xx

Sandy

Thanks for checking in. Your posts are great and offer encouragement to everyone on this forum.

At 9 weeks+ things are still progressing steadily.

I have come to realise that it is the seemingly small achievement that are the most satisfying . Sometimes things that family and friends think are insignifcant.

These last few days a few more to add to my list

Christmas Eve - some last minute shopping in Tesco. Fortunately the store was quite quiet by then and I wanted to get out as soon as possible. Whilst pushing the trolley down the wide aisles, I thought "I am really striding out" just like I used to 18 months ago. No pain and no limp. It made me feel good - even in the supermarket!

Boxing Day - Decided to assemble a flat pack piece of furniture. This entailed a lot of reaching down to the floor and crawling on the floor on all fours. Prior to the new hips this was pretty impossible due to the pain and the restricted range of motion in the hips. Another success and very little swearing at the pieces of wood!

Yesterday - Got the bicycle out of the garage. Prior to the ops I couldn't get my leg over the saddle and pedalling would have been very painful.
Yet another mission accomplished and a short cycle around the local roads followed.

Yes, I still have some mild discomfort in the hip area and if I overdo things a little limping follows but looking back to the first operation I was reporting much the same at the 12 week mark.

Achieving these small things makes me realise how worthwhile the operations have been and the initial worry and apprehension, the pain and discomfort are a small price to pay.

I wish everyone a happy and pain free New Year.

Dave

Hi Dave,

Glad that your recovery continues.

I'll bet you do windsurf again - why not !!

You're right though, it's the little victories that we need to concentrate on.

Merry Christmas
