Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Thanks again to you all for your encouragement.

Roger,

I understand your concerns having had a heart incident in the recovery period of your replacement.

I had a cardiac ablation about 11 years ago to correct irregular heart beats and still periodically suffer from missed beats or palpatations.

I was concerned before both operations but the medical team were fully informed before each time and thought nothing of it. So In my view dont let that stop you going ahead with the second hip when it is necessary.

Regards

Dave

Dave

Thanks for that.

I've sent you a PM regarding your ablation etc. so as not to hijack this thread with heart problems. :thumb:

Dave:

Glad to hear you are doing so well. I tried reading through your posts but didn't notice if you have a cement implant or not. I feel so left behind with mine being non-cemented and have a 50% limit on the amount of weight I can put on my leg for 6 weeks.

 please!

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Chef

To be honest I'm not certain and I didn't ask. however, there are no restrictions on weight bearing so I assume it is cemented.

I'm pretty sore today perhaps tried to do too much yesterday - it was only day 4. Also some swelling an bruising has appeared similar to but not as extensive as last time.

I'm sure you will get there. I don't think it will be a straight line recovery for any of us.

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Dave you know the script rest rest rest and more rest then start your recovery, I am afriad we don't get medals for set backs just stress, anxiety and dissapointment.
Hang in there Dave YOU know you will get there. :thumb:

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

The most embarassing moment was about to happen.

Within the hour I did manage to go - and some more! which caused an overflow on to the bedding - shear embarassment and red face for me but the nursing staff thought nothing of it.
Ah, how I can sympathise Dave. I had a spinal plus GA and managed to overflow the bedpan. Change of sheets for me too!! Great update :thumb:

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Dave I have an uncemented hip and had no weight bearing restrictions from day 1. I think it depends on how conservative your OS feels.

Chef - hope you are getting some :sleepz:

I agree Jaycey, I think it's how your OS feels and I had Anterior Approach and uncemented and was full weight bearing from day one.

I agree. It's just been confirmed that I had an uncemented implant in the femur and a cemented cup in the acetabulum(?) - I saw my Consultant this afternoon. :thumb:

I was weight bearing from Day 1.

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Just catching up with you, Dave. What a wonderful report! You've done very well and it sounds like you are well on your way to your new life.

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

First week update

I thought I would try to post weekly updates as others have done. It seems like a good way of monitoring progress (or lack of it)

So, a week after I arived back home I think I can report that there isn't that much to report!

I am walking with two crutches without much pain or discomfort. I have been out for very short walks on top of walking around the house and into the garden. Nothing too much as I am concoius I am only a week out in the recovery process.

I am taking the pain meds prescribed which seem to be doing a pretty good job for the pain, but unfortunately I am getting an upset stomach a lot of the time.

I felt pretty tired last week even after the short walks. Sleeping is fitful with a lot of waking in the night and sleeping on my back is something I could do without.

There is discomfort and some swelling in the area of the incision which is on my left butt cheek. I have felt some aches and pains down my leg but nothing permanent or in any way severe. Also can feel some pain behind the incision if I put too much weight on the new hip. This is just the same as last time and I am sure just the muscles, tendons and other bits an pieces starting the healing process.

This time I have virtually no swelling in my leg but a little around my ankle, and virtualy no bruising. This is all much better than with the first hip.

I think I was very lucky with the operation and early hospital recovery. As a number of you have said it seemed almost a perfect start to the recovery process.

I thought it couldn't last but so far so good.

As usual, the encouragement and support shown on this forum together with the fund of knowledge and personal experiences help the recovery along.

My thanks to you all, and I my good wishes to you for your own recoveries.

Now what will it be today Judge Judy or QVC!:gaah:

All the best

Dave

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Wonderful second recovery so far Dave !! Glad things are going well for you and just keep doing as you are. What decisions today and what to watch. :what:

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Hi Dave

What an excellent report - you are doing really well.

I just hope I can do that well if/when I have my second one done early next year (maybe?). I'm still waiting for the Secretary to phone . . . .

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Judge Judy is the cheaper option....

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Dave.....sometimes no big news is a good thing. You're having a GREAT recovery so far....this is wonderful!

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Dave:

Good to hear from you and that everything is as planned.

TV sure is boring. I'm glad I'm working from my laptop 8-12 hours a day.

Sleeping on your back. Ugh! I can't wait to be able to sleep on my side.

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Well, after 10 days of what appeared to be excellent progress - the first setback.

I awoke today with considerable bruising down the back for my leg from the back to the knee almost down to my ankle. It also seems a bit more painful putting weight on my leg with the discomfort in the area of the incision and below being more painful.

I am thinking maybe overdid it a bit yesterday. I was on my feet around the house quite a bit had a couple of walks up and down the garden and a walk to the end of the road and back. I've also been getting frustrated using two crutches as its impossible to carry anything. So I have been using one at times and in doing that I am putting more weight on the operated side which it probably isn't ready for yet.

Oh well, so much for heeding my own advice and that of everyone else.

Impatient again!

A day of leg up resting I suspect is called for.

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Well I guess it sounds like you just told yourself what you need to be doing, now didn't you??

It does get hard when you are trying to carrying things and you can't. We can all agree to that. I'm sure today will be a day of relaxing for you !!

Naughty boy - as an old hand you should know better. :oopss:
I'm sure a good rest today will bring you back on track. :console:

How does progress with No 2 compare to No 1 after 10 days? I have a keen interest in second ops now. :thumb:

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Yup, sounds like you did too much. Patience! I know it's very hard.

Hope you are resting today.
